I stumbled across this threshold spasm yesterday. While I practiced finger vibrato. Thank you for your excellant vibratodemonstration, Miss Danielle! It seems to me you also had an excellant bow hold demonstration involving placing the thumb between the hair of the bow and stick like a football. I am practicing every day now on vibrato incessantly repeating Miss Benedettis beginning vibrato lesson. I augment her lesson with the knock, slide, rock by Heather and her method. Thank you to each of you professors of the violin. I am so very greatful! Thank you Danielle! Hope to review your lesson on vibrato tomorrow after Nicola Benedetti and Heather. Yours very truly chris ebbesen usa. Returning to the violin after 40 years vacation from its caprice. Many thanks!😅

Just watched this. Excellent masterclass Danielle! So much to cover in such a limited amount of time! I would suggest that the movement of the knuckle in your two procedures (metronomic, and bow measurement) could be enhanced by adding an exercise I learned from Noumi Fischer long ago: from the "flat" finger position move the finger higher using a "wow" (as in "bow, wow, wow") motion...at first only one controlled motion at a time, then gradually more controlled by adding just as you have suggested with the two procedures. Best, Debbie's dad.

when I hear the word 'color' in music, I begin to think that the discussion is leaving the realm of music as a science and is entering the realm of music as an ancient arcane magic. 🤣

Music is a mix of science (physics) and art music explores auditory color, instead of visual color. If we all played (and practiced) instruments our ears would be as attuned to color difference as our eyes are

The opposite is true, too many professionals have too wide of a vibrato and it is overdone. Having beautifully integrated vibrato that is not wobbly is the ideal sound. The so-called "widening" or "opening up" of vibrato often leads to wobbly vibrato. Oscillating between two notes is recipe for wobbly vibrato.

Joseph Silverstein put it best: "Vibrato is an enhancement to the pitch, it is not a change in pitch" kzbin.info/www/bejne/moqcgWOgjqynn7c&ab_channel=MissMimi i.e. it is there to add vibrancy to the notes we play via the left hand. Yehudi Menuhin, Dounis and Rodney Friend have the philosophy that Vibrato is a fundamental aspect of the finger dropping/placement i.e. we add vibrancy to 'every' note we play because it is just part of the finger being placed on the string. So indeed: 'narrower' (relative to your instrument Violin, Viola ...) is perhaps 'better' but that metric should be governed by the effectiveness of the performer in delivering the music to the listener.

Both sides are true. Sometimes it needs to be narrower. Sometimes it needs to be wider. Sometimes faster and sometimes slower. The worst is when it is on, or off!

So many genres of music, early music folk and traditional music, I believe vibrato should only be a form of ornamentation or embellishment not tone production like romantic music.

She seems to be addressing students who are sufficiently advanced and intelligent enough to work 99% of this out for themselves. As with many of these "masterclasses" we get statements of the blindingly obvious with far too much talking and not enough practical demonstration. Here's what she said taking over 45 minutes: "Vibrato is good for making a beautiful sound on the violin. It should not be too wide or too narrow. Here's how it works". There - less than one minute saving all the tedious rest of the talk.

The most obvious things are the last we see. I have played violin since 7 years, and this "obvious" things from this video have changed me as a violinist. I have never payed attention to the lower pitch, never thought about dividing the bow, and never about practicing connecting in that way

I see it as another form of gatekeeping. “Look at how ethereal we talk about this” rich people love that, so they put it out to the public, but the actual education happens behind a paywall. Julia Bushkova does better

This is equal to Julia's lessons. It has nothing to due with rich or poor. Both of these pédagogues are great teachers and players. (Watch some of her other lessons , it is quite evident ) There is no gatekeeping going on here.. do you not care to play complicated advanced compositions. Then this is not for YOU. This is HIGH LEVEL education, and right in line with the exacting way and process to achieve the highest levels of violin playing. It's not for everyone. Not everyone wants to be an Olympian. That's fine. To an outsider, the *obvious* does not need to be discussed, to a master it is the key to continuous improvement (esp with something complex like the art of violin playing)

Until you are experienced enough you won't be able to understand. I watch this 3 times over a period of 1 year. It is not pushing the fi ger forward that creates the proper vibrato, but pulling the fingers backwards, that how the first knuckle comes into action in the whole vibrato. This is the most detailed explanation of the vibrato, it actually brought my tone creation much better.

Thanks for your video. I play violin mainly and also viola. Recently I played viola (I am lucky to have a great instrument) in a chamber orchestra playing Mendelssohn Symphony No.3 which starts with the violas with a noble beautiful slow theme accompanied by the wind. There was only 3 violas (2 of us strong players) and I got stopped and told to NOT USE VIBRATO! Absolutely finished me since I am very proud of making a rich sound on the viola when (rarely) we are given the tune. What is the point in playing if you don’t allow passion. I left the orchestra after that concert, for various reasons really, because they appointed the conductor permanently. And I could see it wasn’t ever going to work. Sad. I am pretty sure I have a great vibrato and know when to use it and not use it. Roger Norrington famously asks his players to not use vibrato when playing baroque music. I understand BUT you should allow players (including professionals) to express themselves. We are not robots!

Vibrato is not a natural movement for humans. I've known too many elderly violinists that regretted playing the violin cuz it wrecked their joints. What a way to normalize abuse. Actually Heifetz couldn't move his right arm because his muscle detached from his bones from all the Bowing in his life.

That is a totally inaccurate and misleading statement. It was because of the way he did UPBOW Staccato. A very niche aspect of bow arm technique. And there are ways to learn it without that kind of tension. Yes, a violin puts your body into unnatural positions, but we figure how to make that comfortable, not the other way around.
