I have seen Haiti played to succes numberous times and actually paying the debt and not just hitting the "lol no" desicion button and getting a defense pact with someone huge or something is something i have not seen until now. Good on you for being able to do it and show me that i can if i want to. Might try it some day
@alexandererhard2516Ай бұрын
That might have perhaps something to do with the fact that it was a lot more difficult a few patches ago. You didn't start in debt, and the payment to France was only 4 times 80k. But the Interest to France started at 4k instead, meanwhile the (new) starting internal debt only is 1.14k in his picture. That's an ~ 800£ difference at a time where you have maybe ~7000£ revenue, and if you know how impactful even a minor amount of surplus is when dealing with high-interest debt (both ingame and in real life), you can see why it got a whole lot easier. Also the ability to have nationally owned buildings and get the full profit value, or let them be privatized to pay off lump sums of your internal debt helps of course, both of which were not present in the previous big Patch.
@rotomfan63Ай бұрын
@@alexandererhard2516 Yeah, actually those are really good things for Haiti. The update had so much impact on so many things and how you play in so many i can see how something like how 1 country benefits a lot from it could slip past me. And yeah Haiti's debt before this patch was basically impossible. That's why whenever you saw it played, FIRST THING THAT HAPPENED, was "Fuck that debt" button getting clicked.
@alexandererhard2516Ай бұрын
@@rotomfan63 Understandable. I tried it once, and don't think I would have done it without eventually GB inviting me into their customs union, meaning I could just freely activate all good pms without having to carefully balance trade routes and bureaucracy use. I also find it hilarious that the "debt to France interest" got nerfed hard. Previously, a 320k debt with 4k weekly was a horrifying 65% annual interest. Even insignificant unrecognized powers only have to pay 40% on their debt. Now, 2M with 2k weekly interest is a 5.2% interest, that's better than a Great Power without Laissez-Faire gets at game start, including France itself! If the game would allow me to take out another 500k for 500 weekly I'd happily take that and consider it development aid lol.

For people interested in Haitis plight, please know that the debt was based on property the French lost during Haitis independence. That property being people. They had to basically chop down all of their trees to make basic payments. At the same time they were not able to export to the USA because southern plantation owners were afraid the radical idea freedoms from slavery will hurt their bottom line. USA is also more closely aligned with France at this time. The French are also complicit in modern colonialism in modern Africa in their former colonies via currency control. Point is to give more context to some of the poorest countries in the world and fight against the notion that just because slavery ended 200 years ago that there isn’t injustices still happening today, nor do the lingering effects are gone completely

They also received billions in aid throughout their state's existence (about half of their debt to France) which their leaders squandered totally. It's funny how the debt is portrayed as really big when in reality it was just 2 years of the income Haiti provided to France pre-independance.
@alexandererhard2516Ай бұрын
I don't know the real life details but interestingly that might fit a bit better with the pre-1.7 implementation of Haiti's debt: Pre 1.7, Haiti started with no internal debt, and owed only 320k to France. But it came with a horrifying 4k weekly interest, which (assuming 52 weeks/year) represents a 65% annual interest rate, even unrecognized insignificant powers only have to pay 40% at game start. That was very hard to climb out of, I think I only managed it due to GB inviting me into their customs union, allowing me to use better production methods. AI Haiti would just default over and over every 1-2 years. With 1.7 it would get massively easier, by giving you 2M debt, but only 2k weekly payments, and starting in debt with another 1,2k internal payments. If you've ever made calculations about paying off debts, you know that just ~800 less expenses (compared to a revenue of maybe 6k?) can make a massive difference. Government constructed buildings now being nation-owned also helps out Haiti a lot. Funnily enough 2k weekly interest on 2M debts is a 5.2% yearly interest rate, which is better than Great Powers have at game start! If the game would allow me to take another 500k for 500 weekly, I'd consider it development aid and happily take it lol.
@alexandererhard2516Ай бұрын
The AI also, as far as I have seen, can manage to pay off this new debt successfully, after defaulting once on their internal debt which then tends to result in a positive balance quite easily.
