The system is bass ackword when the politicians pick their voters rather than voters picking the politicians. Republicans wanted Reagan to have a third term, Democrats wanted Obama to have a third term. Neither of them could because, I forget the amendment, that limits presidents to two terms. I read somewhere that the framers of the constitution wanted people from all walks of life to bring their experience and perspective into Congress, for a while, then return home. Then others could repeat the process. Now we have mostly lawyers in Congress, who seemed to be trained in a zero sum win or lose adversarial system. It is not working.

Term limits should be controlled by the people. Personally, If you do a good job and the people like what you're doing, I think you should be allowed to get re elected however many times so we at least have some consistent progress in this country. I also believe some type of heavy background, psychological tests and a history of positive merits should be mandated for candidates so we don't have any more nutcases.

I think we should have term limits, but they should be fairly wide. Senators are elected for 6 years. A 4-term limit is 24 years. That's long enough for anybody. Congresspeople get 12 chances to be re-elected, also 24 years. Get rid of political gerrymandering, too.

Well politicians do not know or care about rights, just rules of civil procedure. Rights are about equity. The rules of civil procedure is roman canon law,, the color of law, corporate policy, maritime admiralty construct, commercial paper, legal fiction. Good argument about term limits, Vic. Guess I'm in the minority, though, figuring expertise and competency increase with experience, providing better leadership, better service. Though, if people were the focus, maybe term limits would compel representatives to get as much good done as possible while there, knowing they have little time. Not realistic, though; as you imply, we don't have representatives oriented in this way. Until we get money out of politics, they'll never listen to us, never be responsive to us, will always resist. Maybe, curtailing Congress' powers is the way to go, prohibiting them from regulating institutions or voting for legislation if a donation was accepted-- the conflict of interest thing preventing influence. Only those who haven't received money from a particular business or interest group would be eligible to vote on proposals or reform that focus on them. Donors would know their money doesn't include influence, a vote or deference. Then, all we'd have to do is make it illegal for congresspeople to bribe other congresspeople to vote how their donors want. Meh, term limits are easier. Dedicated public service could end up occurring with that as well. Why does it feel like giving up, though, like we're just containing the problem, not trying to fix it?

I personally believe that if any politician was a good politician and put our tax money we’re it should be that the same politician who cared would somehow die or get assasinated. Because the rich don’t like ideas like that. Just like they took out the two guys who figured out how to drive cars that run off of water. The rich oil and gas companies didn’t like that too much either. And the government profits from those companies big time. So therefore the government didn’t like it. term limits would help, to a degree, but what we really need is to get money out of elections, a simple rule, one voter can make a $100 dollar donation, that's it. nothing else... commercials drop drastically, and to make up for it, you make all politicians debate on public television at least once. problem solved, a peoples democracy restored.

Too bad that Congress themselves are the only ones who can vote to change the term limits... the people's say doesn't mean squat. There was once a time when it was an honor to go serve one's constituents without pay because it was for the good of their people. That attitude has been lost throughout our country's history via Congress' ability to remain in office. Remember that it was Congress that passed (in 1947) that a president could only be elected president two times for a total of 8 years. What about their happy asses? I believe that the majority of folks would agree that for change and reflection of the times that term after term after term of these folks that have a stranglehold over new officials needs to be corrected.

For term limits to exist. Congress needs to pass legislation making it into a law or Amendment or whatever. They will never vote themselves out of a job. Making millionaires pay more in taxes will never happen. The United States Congress is made up of all millionaires. The writer’s of our Constitution never envisioned a career politician. If they had, there would have been term limits written into the Constitution.
