The company behind the websites Vice and Motherboard has filed for bankruptcy in the US and is set to be sold to a group of its lenders.
Vice Media Group - which was valued at $5.7bn (£4.5bn) in 2017 - could be taken over for $225m.
The youth-focused digital publisher said it will continue to operate during the bankruptcy process.

I remember subscribing to them in 2011, because of the content they put out back then. Slowly but surely, however they leaned into pop culture aspects more than real reporting and I fell off personally.

They had great documentaries ~10 years ago. The North Korea series, Cannibal Warlords, various drug documentaries, the list goes on. For me Vice died when Shane Smith transitioned out of the journalist position.

I’ve been a media entrepreneur for 20 years, and the problem is not, as Chris Harris says, that “everyone can broadcast to anyone” on social media. And there’s actually quite a lot of money in journalism. The problem is 1) Advertising has moved to Google and Facebook since they offer better targetting and a one-stop for advertisers. 2) Because the internet was brand new in the 90s, no one could really charge for content initially, and a culture of free digital content took roots with media users. It is finally changing, and paywalls are becoming acceptable, but it’s a long process. 3) A widespread system for micropayments is still missing from the internet. Online transactions are still expensive and cumbersome, so a media outlet can’t, say, charge 20p for you to read an article or watch a Vice documentary. The subscription model rules, and it favours a few bigger outlets.

@@xmurisfurderx Thanks for the insights, but that is very wrong. My company's paywall is funding our operations, just as they are funding many other media outlets. They work best for verticals but can also work for general media of a certain quality. To an extent, the old model has indeed been restored. People are increasingly willing to pay for quality content - not least because of the poor quality of most ad-funded content.

....regarding which, these companies have often had a confused, hybrid sort of product, and this resulted from an even more indefinite business model. I have been surprised and saddened for decades at how badly traditional media has gotten significant aspects of stories wrong that I had personal involvement in and knowledge of, and then when the alt media companies came along (including the echo-chamber political media serving Russian and other interests vested in division and the decline of Western democracy), the problem got dramatically worse and scaled-up rather than better. Those like VICE would cover some important subjects for reporting that often had little attention paid to them otherwise, but great care with verified, factual detail and multiple perspectives being included is the hard part and would get placed somewhere under production values as priorities. This was especially painful when covering highly technical subjects where it was obvious that no one involved in creating the story knew enough to avoid looking ignorant. It has not been as much good journalism as it could have been.

vice lost because they just weren';t producing content quick enough to get people going back. They didn't place ads like the tacky mainstream channels. they did paid editorials, so they'll make a article or video around giving a brand exposure. websites like daily mail gets tonnes of returning visitors and a lot of shares, they can basically gossip about latest influncer gossips and stuff, make a good headline and get people in. Vice was trying to do higher quality stuff and just couldn't compete for people's attention. Add to that, a lot of stuff they were product was not for mass consumption but for fringe audiences.

confirmation bias. I agree. I got a bit of nostalgia when i saw VICE using their old longform format. But it just didn't hit the same You can see the breakage, from reports seeming haphazardly edited, to well crafted narratives with ulterior motives. Honestly, my two cents... their audience got old. Young impressionable millennials are in their 30s now; got that MBA, double masters, with a minor in history... and they know better than to get their news from VICE. VICE got outclassed. Be honest, journo degree isnt hard. Which is competing with history majors and econ majors for attention. I dont care what some soyboy thinks about Ukraine. I need facts, not a propaganda piece. If i was VICE Executive Officer... i'd have taught my staff Spanish. This would all be tragic, if it wasn't poetic justice. Couldn't have happened to a better company. Vice is that teacher that dropped your lowest homework and curved your grades. Millennials are realizing that's why they lose to the kid that took college calc in high school. Facts matter, reality has a low tolerance for bulllshit. TL;DR: if you stopped watching VICE rn, would you miss anything that you couldnt get anywhere else? I meet professors, really cool dudes, too shy to stand in front of a camera, but give him burger and five Heinekens, and he can condense his entire semester long course in 5 hours. All of it peer reviewed.

The daily mail is just as bad. One day they're saying eggs are good for you and the next they're saying eggs kill you. All these companies are the same. They will lie to you to make their money. Can't trust any of them. Vice deserves it as well after what they did to the tate brothers.

Compairing Vice to Buzzfeed is a bit unfair. Buzzfeed never made one even okay documentary, when Vice has had some of the best reportage of the last ten years. Sure they had their lowpoints but they still producess some of the best online news prodcasts.

Their “legacy” is already based off on something else's, their hitherto-uncredited spiritual-ancestor ever since one of the Occidental Messiahs in "iHindoo IT Cell", Gavin McInnes( no salutation!) was booted-out - leading way to their reincarnation in 2007-ish.

I was extremely skeptical about having to pay for this service, but it was worth every penny! E-Working is easy to use and gives you full visibility into easy earnings opportunities that truly allow flexibility. As a full-time working mom, E-Working made it so much easier to find the right job. I'm so thankful and blessed to have E-Working point me in the right direction, where the grass is truly greener from a career development standpoint, not to mention work-life balance. I really hope they survive. As a foreign consumer of Vice media, it is refreshing to see that they are self-aware of all the “vices“ and biases of the anglo speaking rich countries. You can see that they try to have a worldly style, and generally, they can achieve it.

They started off as an incredible news channel and maintained a great reputation in the consumer news community, but eventually they started to fall off and you could tell that a lot of their funding was swaying them "too far left" which turned their news into a bias source of information. Overall, I could definitely see this coming because they were an independent news organization and after a while of being directed by their investors to do irrelevant news topics, they lost viewers. You can't just have any old investor come in and run your news channel. If you're being funded to cover stories that don't relate to what your channel represents, then you're self-sabotaging your own organization at that point.

Sad to see. The original creators made such great content and it was real groundbreaking journalism. Now they create content without fact checking or have certain narratives they try to push. Hard to support something that just doesn't have the content or credibility it used to...

This is alarmist nonsense. There are plenty of news sources providing good, in-depth journalism. One just has to be willing to look outside of American/British news media sources. India and European news sources can be excellent, and they lack the biases found in Vice, NPR, CNN, BBC, etc.
