When you live among people with a different accent long enough, it tends to rub off on you. I knew a guy who lived in the UK for only two years, and he came back with a weird hybrid accent that wore off in like a couple weeks

To me this story was not about Africa's cowboy capitalists. It was about one guy's mission to get some trucks from the South to the North, there wasn't even more than one story investigated. My father in law runs an import export business for artists brushes. He had a container of brushes that he was trying to get through Nigerian customs. They impounded it for no reason, so he had to fly down there to work it through, so he could sell it to the local distributor. When he got there an officer took his passport and threw it in a big pile of other passports. He then spent the rest of the day paying various people and officers to get his passport back. Once he had his passport again, he turned around and boarded the next plane home, leaving his container in impound. He then swore he would never do business in Africa again.

I lived in Tanzania for a year(2022) and the people are very welcoming and friendly, the only problem in the country is that nothing gets done in the time it should be, they will stop a piece of equipment on a production line for 3 days to do a job that should be completed in 6 hours, loosing 1miljon Tanzania shillings every hour that it's not in operation, and the startup costs are around 2 times as much as the equipment lost during standing time ... And in more than one circumstance they restarted the equipment before ensuring that it was safe to do so resulting in double the startup costs

That guy Ray seems like a hell of a resourceful type of guy to have along for this kind of work. Like others, I noticed how he adopted an accent when talking to some Africans. It's kind of funny, but I understand it. I've worked with Punjabi Indians, South Africans, and other folks who have a very distinctive way of coloring their english...and without even realizing it when you are in the midst of another culture you kind of adopt their accent while communicating with them. It's not exactly necessary to do this to be understood or anything, it's just something you do without consciously thinking about it.
@McTimmyFly
@McTimmyFly 9 жыл бұрын
+Mog Yeah man, it's funny. I used to think my father was demeaning people when he changed his word pronunciation and drastically simplified his syntax and grammar whenever we were out of the country. Now that I work outside of the US, I find myself doing it as well so that the locals can understand me more easily. Funny too is that the grammar simplifications change from country to country depending on how their native languages work.

From Uganda and I recognize much of this . The terrain is now improved (mostly roads) . The people are mostly welcoming and friendly . South Sudan was just out of war war then , thus the hostility . However as Ian said there's lack of resources and gaping opportunities for any one creative and resourceful enough to solve even basic problems . And it wouldn't cost too much either as everything is affordable (even the corrupt guys) in most of Sub Saharan Africa .

These guys are smart, they may seem crazy but when you look at the richest man in Africa, Aliko Dangote, he managed to make his billions because he had virtually no competition in the African markets. Now everyone is trying to tap into Africa when they see how fast his wealth is growing. In 2008 he was at 3.3 billion , just 6 years later he is now at 24 billion, if that's not progress I don't know what is. I don't mind if people think Africa is a shithole, in fact I love it, that means we don't all have to rush at once.

Natives will try to swindle you if they think you aren't familiar with local tradition/customs. It happens in China's markets, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, so on and so on. If you used an American accent on them while haggling, you wouldn't win nearly as many trades. Putting on a fake accent or intensifying an existing one makes you seem more trustworthy/local.

I expected to see a bunch of guys in a convoy with armed security hauling expensive equipment to a war zone for big $$$. Instead I saw a couple of poor unarmed men paying fines to corrupt police every 50km and stuffing bannanas in their axle to keep the truck going long enough to make it. What a waste. Don't those corrupt police realize for every truck they stop, 10 trucks won't even attempt the journey? You can't prosper in these conditions with corruption and without unfettered access to the infrastructure.
@Greg-yu4ij
@Greg-yu4ij 5 жыл бұрын
Oh - and did anyone notice the insane amount of wrecked trucks? Who pays for all that? It has to be some socialist government somewhere. The drivers don't own those trucks or they would not be wrecked. What you are seeing is the end stages of socialism - where 50 people depend in some way on one earner. Or 500 corrupt police and roadside vendors depend on 2 truckers in this case. You all have to make it on your own - because a government big enough to give you everything you want, is a government big enough to take away everything that you have.

Greg Purdy - Rather than saying they’ve gone through all the stages of being a socialist country like Sweden, and this is the final stage, I’d say it’s more like the beginning stage of modernization. How do you think the American West was, with Conestoga wagons, outlaws, train robberies, mob justice, lynching parties, gun-slingers, bounty hunters, people fighting over land ownership? Was that post-socialism, or pre-anything? Give them time. There are some good people in Africa, and there are some cheaters. There’s war all over the place there. The vehicles they’re taking to the client, are going to be used to remove land mines in South Sudan. The problem with the government systems isn’t that they’re socialist, but that they’re autocratic and kleptocratic. And at every stage on the chain of authority, people are trying to get a piece of the pie for themselves. But the police in this video seemed pretty okay. They have to check trucks because there’s all kinds on contraband, including arms, and human being trafficked, and there are many militant groups and many war-zones.

I think thats an example of white privilege right there. A local driver would never ask "why not?" and get away with it. But white guy, driving a UN branded truck? That was an easy pass

Oh really? White privilege lol go to around 25 minute mark where the drunk local gets set free after the accident and the two truck drivers are the ones who have to go to the police center. Think you need the red pill.
@zackwanambwa3373
@zackwanambwa3373 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think I need the red pill. I have never actually complained about racism, I have never encountered it myself. The drunk local would be set free no matter who they hit. He was not set free because he hit white folks. Here in Africa, the cops are our worst friends. Even if you are innocent and they stop you, you have to be nice to them and try to get them to forgive you for the wrongs you have not committed. Trying to undermine him would just make things worse for you. You might be on the right, but you dont want him to call vehicle inspection unit to come measure how much break lining you have, it will take forever. Only a white person can get away with that, trust me.

So in a video about capitalism and "Young Men Striking Out To Secure Their Fortune" there wasn't one moment of discussion about how much they made driving that truck, nor how this might be a sustainable living for the truckers. WTF?

I imagine the reporter did inquire about this... I imagine perhaps, they didn't want to share that information; perhaps this did a service to those who may have flew over there, purely for the cash those guys made, without a desire for adventure & the patience to overcome all those obstacles. If you think about the cash that had to be spent before they even hit the road, along with all the obstacles on the way... I doubt the client wasn't aware of this & you can be sure that trust also had a fair or high price... I think there are many people in places like that, that are professional recyclers, as well as survivors... those vehicles could have been scrapped &/or refitted, probably like a week before that guy could even get a clue as to exactly what happened. He probably wouldn't do this, because I'm sure there'd be no chance for him to get anything back... which makes sense, now that I think of it, for another reason why he'd hire these white Americans; they'd be much easier to find. Factor in a good LOA (living out allowance) in N. America, that would be expected even working less than 8 hours away from one's home... anyways, be sure that they'd probably say it was worth it. Also think about the fact that another guy had to be flown in, as the other gentleman left... I can imagine that conversation, "look, I can't just be sitting here not making money... either pay this amount or get somebody else to do it." In the end, they got another, evidently competent worker & friend, onto the crew with a free flight... as the gentleman ended up back on the job, anyways.

@@Sputterish could you give me at least an example of where I should have used a period & didn't? What's the general rule? Is there for an example, a typical number of words? As far as I know, outside of objectively different sentences, it's just like a suggestive breath; whereas a comma or semi-colon, can serve the same purpose (without the need to, "start," a new sentence).
@Sputterish
@Sputterish 5 жыл бұрын
@@CloudVirtue When people see a period they take more of a "mental stop" to process the sentence. I was going to say that the "take a breath" happens at the period so it's interesting that you said it happens with commas. I personally think commas are a very slight pause, but not a complete "breath of air".

For everyone wondering why the guy changes his accent ; it's most likely an automatic , natural thing. Also it's not just the accent he changes, he changes his vocabulary and grammar too. When I'm in travelling in countries where English is not the main language I start using a more primitive/basic kind of English (for an example ; instead of saying '' tomorrow i'll be going to the beach'' I would say '''tomorrow I go beach''') It's so that locals can have an easier time understanding you. In some cases, where locals only understand a handful of English words, I would have to cut it down even more. While putting extra focus on using my tone of voice, facial expression and hand movements to communicate better with them. My dad calls this ''Tarzan communication'' (where 2 people with no mutual language try to communicate)

1. Africa has round about 2000 different languages spoken there, so as you travel through 7 countries, English is going to be the 3rd or 4th language that the locals can speak, so the idea is to condense your message down to the essentials, simplify it.... 2. And also some folks might see you as arrogant if you show up full on American or British accent, coz it might have the appearance that you view them in condescension. 3. Use your vowels and consonants, I was watching a show once where Americans were talking, and "atom" and "Adam" sound exactly the same. We don't do that here! :-D
