They impounded it for no reason, so he had to fly down there to work it through, so he could sell it to the local distributor. When he got there an officer took his passport and threw it in a big pile of other passports. He then spent the rest of the day paying various people and officers to get his passport back. Once he had his passport again, he turned around and boarded the next plane home, leaving his container in impound. He then swore he would never do business in Africa again.

That guy Ray seems like a hell of a resourceful type of guy to have along for this kind of work. Like others, I noticed how he adopted an accent when talking to some Africans. It's kind of funny, but I understand it. I've worked with Punjabi Indians, South Africans, and other folks who have a very distinctive way of coloring their english...and without even realizing it when you are in the midst of another culture you kind of adopt their accent while communicating with them. It's not exactly necessary to do this to be understood or anything, it's just something you do without consciously thinking about it.

+Mog Yeah man, it's funny. I used to think my father was demeaning people when he changed his word pronunciation and drastically simplified his syntax and grammar whenever we were out of the country. Now that I work outside of the US, I find myself doing it as well so that the locals can understand me more easily. Funny too is that the grammar simplifications change from country to country depending on how their native languages work.

From Uganda and I recognize much of this . The terrain is now improved (mostly roads) . The people are mostly welcoming and friendly . South Sudan was just out of war war then , thus the hostility . However as Ian said there's lack of resources and gaping opportunities for any one creative and resourceful enough to solve even basic problems . And it wouldn't cost too much either as everything is affordable (even the corrupt guys) in most of Sub Saharan Africa .

These guys are smart, they may seem crazy but when you look at the richest man in Africa, Aliko Dangote, he managed to make his billions because he had virtually no competition in the African markets. Now everyone is trying to tap into Africa when they see how fast his wealth is growing. In 2008 he was at 3.3 billion , just 6 years later he is now at 24 billion, if that's not progress I don't know what is. Instead I saw a couple of poor unarmed men paying fines to corrupt police every 50km and stuffing bannanas in their axle to keep the truck going long enough to make it. What a waste. Don't those corrupt police realize for every truck they stop, 10 trucks won't even attempt the journey? You can't prosper in these conditions with corruption and without unfettered access to the infrastructure.
@Greg-yu4ij5 жыл бұрын
Oh - and did anyone notice the insane amount of wrecked trucks? Who pays for all that? It has to be some socialist government somewhere. The drivers don't own those trucks or they would not be wrecked. What you are seeing is the end stages of socialism - where 50 people depend in some way on one earner. Or 500 corrupt police and roadside vendors depend on 2 truckers in this case. You all have to make it on your own - because a government big enough to give you everything you want, is a government big enough to take away everything that you have.

Greg Purdy - Rather than saying they’ve gone through all the stages of being a socialist country like Sweden, and this is the final stage, I’d say it’s more like the beginning stage of modernization. How do you think the American West was, with Conestoga wagons, outlaws, train robberies, mob justice, lynching parties, gun-slingers, bounty hunters, people fighting over land ownership? Was that post-socialism, or pre-anything? Give them time. There are some good people in Africa, and there are some cheaters. There’s war all over the place there. The vehicles they’re taking to the client, are going to be used to remove land mines in South Sudan. The problem with the government systems isn’t that they’re socialist, but that they’re autocratic and kleptocratic. And at every stage on the chain of authority, people are trying to get a piece of the pie for themselves. But the police in this video seemed pretty okay. They have to check trucks because there’s all kinds on contraband, including arms, and human being trafficked, and there are many militant groups and many war-zones.

@zackwanambwa33737 жыл бұрын
I don't think I need the red pill. I have never actually complained about racism, I have never encountered it myself. The drunk local would be set free no matter who they hit. He was not set free because he hit white folks. Here in Africa, the cops are our worst friends. Even if you are innocent and they stop you, you have to be nice to them and try to get them to forgive you for the wrongs you have not committed. Trying to undermine him would just make things worse for you. You might be on the right, but you dont want him to call vehicle inspection unit to come measure how much break lining you have, it will take forever. Only a white person can get away with that, trust me.

I imagine the reporter did inquire about this... I imagine perhaps, they didn't want to share that information; perhaps this did a service to those who may have flew over there, purely for the cash those guys made, without a desire for adventure & the patience to overcome all those obstacles. If you think about the cash that had to be spent before they even hit the road, along with all the obstacles on the way... I doubt the client wasn't aware of this & you can be sure that trust also had a fair or high price... I think there are many people in places like that, that are professional recyclers, as well as survivors... those vehicles could have been scrapped &/or refitted, probably like a week before that guy could even get a clue as to exactly what happened. He probably wouldn't do this, because I'm sure there'd be no chance for him to get anything back... which makes sense, now that I think of it, for another reason why he'd hire these white Americans; they'd be much easier to find. Factor in a good LOA (living out allowance) in N. America, that would be expected even working less than 8 hours away from one's home... anyways, be sure that they'd probably say it was worth it. Also think about the fact that another guy had to be flown in, as the other gentleman left... I can imagine that conversation, "look, I can't just be sitting here not making money... either pay this amount or get somebody else to do it." In the end, they got another, evidently competent worker & friend, onto the crew with a free flight... as the gentleman ended up back on the job, anyways.

For everyone wondering why the guy changes his accent ; it's most likely an automatic , natural thing. Also it's not just the accent he changes, he changes his vocabulary and grammar too. When I'm in travelling in countries where English is not the main language I start using a more primitive/basic kind of English (for an example ; instead of saying '' tomorrow i'll be going to the beach'' I would say '''tomorrow I go beach''') It's so that locals can have an easier time understanding you. In some cases, where locals only understand a handful of English words, I would have to cut it down even more. While putting extra focus on using my tone of voice, facial expression and hand movements to communicate better with them. My dad calls this ''Tarzan communication'' (where 2 people with no mutual language try to communicate)

And also some folks might see you as arrogant if you show up full on American or British accent, coz it might have the appearance that you view them in condescension. 3. Use your vowels and consonants, I was watching a show once where Americans were talking, and "atom" and "Adam" sound exactly the same. We don't do that here! :-D
