The Silent HIV Crisis Sweeping the American South

TONIC (VICE's new health channel) travels to Jackson, Mississippi, one of the hardest hit Southern cities, to investigate why black gay men are getting diagnosed and falling to a disease that can be managed. We’ll discuss issues tied to systematic racial discrimination, such as low income and poverty, lack of access to adequate health care, limited HIV testing and education and stigma attached to the virus. We’ll meet heroic social workers and researchers struggling to bring HIV+ the care they need, as well as HIV+ men who are speaking out about their disease in hopes of changing the stigmas attached to it.
HIV diagnoses in the United States have generally plummeted since the 1980’s, and treatment strategies are now so effective that some are beginning to talk about the end of the AIDS epidemic. However, for gay black men in America, the chances of getting HIV in a lifetime are still one in two. In some Southern states, the rates of infection for black men who have sex with men rival rates in underdeveloped countries like Botswana. Once diagnosed with HIV, these men are unable to access the medicine, clinical resources and psychological support they need to keep life ­threatening AIDS diagnoses at bay.

Here's the deal. It's not about condoms... These men hide and are sexual in secret. They are raised to believe that it has to be that way for their safety. Now because of this and a lack of public health access and education...a lot of them don't know much about HIV at all, most of them have no sexual education of resources to allow them to be open and honest, respect themselves and be advocates for the ones younger than them. My heart breaks for any LGBT person who feels oppressed, especially in the southern states. Some of these men were scared to even go to the dr to get tested because of the strong stigmas attached to it in those areas. You don't have to relate to see the hurt and pain in these men's eyes to know that a) sexuality isn't a choice b) they need help and they do embrace it when they have access to it. Being open minded is key and being compassionate for those in need should always exist. Don't judge before you really take the time to learn someone else's true reality, and help them if you can! First, my heart goes out to all of these men. As a gay man, I can understand the prejudice we can face. However, I'm a white male living in Toronto, and I'm definitely not obviously gay (not sure how to say that without sounding like an total jackass). I'm HIV negative, BUT, HIV plays a huge role in my life. As a 48 year old guy, I've lost dozens of friends to this rotten disease, each one just destroyed me. I found myself in the role of protector. The hate and cruelty my friends faced was unbelievable, but I refused to let it happen (I'm 6' tall and solid muscle, not many will challenge me when I'm pissed off). I've fought many battles, both emotional, and physical, to protect those I love. My black friends who were HIV+ had the worse experiences over my white friends who were positive as well. Back in the 80's and 90's, we didn't have the rights and freedoms we now enjoy. We faced open discrimination on a daily basis, I did a lot of fighting, but everyone needs a champion to help them, and it was the only thing I could do to save my loved ones from the hell they faced. I still have several friends who are positive, and granted, at least here in Toronto, we now have every possible right and freedom we could ever want, yet despite that, they still face discrimination and hate. Thankfully, most of my positive friends still living, have access to the medications and health care for free (we all have free health care in Canada). With modern drugs, it's been taken off the terminal diseases list and is now considered a chronic disease, because there are no limits to life spans with HIV anymore. My dear friend Billy, has been positive, and has hep B and C (he was kicked out of his home after coming out when he was only 17, came to Toronto, and was homeless. He was lured into prostitution and drugs, and spent 10 years of his life in hell, which was how he contracted his diseases). But, it's been over 25 years, and he's still healthy, and happy because of the meds we now have access to. I've been in a monogamous relationship for the past 28 years, so I was lucky that we weren't single, and having multiple partners. BUT...I know, more then any of you could ever know how it feels to be discriminated against because of an invisible disease/disability. Since I was 20, I've been battling Crohn's disease and colon cancer. I've died for 2 minutes, and died nearly twice more. I've had 22 surgeries, with #23 in two weeks. They've surgically removed my rectum, entire large bowel, and almost all of my small bowel over the years. I also have chronic depression and anxiety, osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, plus many other chronic illness. I was forced to retire two years ago because of my health, but like having HIV, because you can't see it, I'm accused of faking it all the time. Sorry for the long spew, but I just wanted to say why I understand what you're going through. But even in the worst of times, I've learned to tell those who discriminate , to go fuck themselves. No one has the right to judge you, and it's none of their business. I live my life the way I want, and they don't like it, then that's their problem. It took me years to get the courage and strength I now have, but I think this applies to everyone who suffers from a chronic illness. Be proud of who you are, be true to yourself, and to hell with what the world says or thinks, because at the end of the day, we're the ones who have to live with ourselves. And by the way, to those guys who think they're ugly...seriously? Trust me, you're NOT ugly, at all, you're all really good looking guys (I've always had the hots for black guys). I don't think that the main issue here is how they contracted HIV. The documentary has more to do with the lack of resources and support that are given to people within this demographic. Public health measures go beyond prevention, but also include resources for treatment. This could be contrasted with all of the money and resources that are be allocated to rural white populations that are suffering from opioid addiction. With those folks, the government has made treatment and prevention a top priority. Bottom line the people we as Americans value most get the most help during hard times, while others (i.e. gay, black, HIV-positive, low-income men) tend to suffer.

People want to screw like rabbits with no accountability. I feel sorry that these young men have made poor choices and unfortunately there is disparages in the system to the treatments they can receive, but it's a proven fact that wearing condoms drastically reduce the risk of HIV. The same thing is happening in ATL. I read a article put out by the CDC that stated that the rate of HIV in Atlanta was similar to the rates in 3rd World Countries! I have herd first hand of the type of promiscuity that goes down in ATL and it's no exaggeration. Regardless of the disparages in treatment, if the hard facts prove that AA have a higher rate of contracting the disease that can only conclude that AA are less likely to make better sexual choices.

Unfortunately, the poverty issue is being used as an excuse in this video, but Gay African Americans have the Highest HIV infection rates all over the country - even in rich and affluent areas/states/cities/etc.. Latinos also have poverty issues, discrimination, religious/cultural stigmas, and often language barriers, yet their HIV rates are nowhere as high as African Americans. This is yet another major issue the African American community needs to be honest about and stop blaming others or making excuses for poor choices

Of course it does not discriminate based on orientation. I am just speaking on the issue of black women with an alarming rate of new hiv cases in the US from sleeping with their bfs and husbands. Their natural inclination is not to. This video shows the level of pressure they're under. Christianity doesn't teach facts about gay people, it just demonises them. With that poor level of education, its not surprising they don't have proper education about HIV. Even the government refuses funding to teach them because being gay is illegal. They're forced to deny their very being & who they are, so of course living in denial about the risks of HIV/AIDS is there too. The very people who are perpetuating the situation & think they're only punishing gays have got it wrong because HIV is coming for them to. The state & church should educate properly that its ok to be gay & that you need to use protection, regardless of orientation. Until they do, more straight women will become HIV+.
