well, he's either full of hot air or outstandingly impressive about saying he doesn't feel like returning home. although, when he says something like that, for those who wish to flee and CAN'T... it's a violent slap in their faces.

yeah as said above, it's a rite of passage for Nuer men, done in the late teens, essentially marking the point where you become a man: during the ritual you get 6 lines cut in your forehead. Apparently it's become less common from the 70s onward (particularly in the Eastern part of Nuerland) as the Nuer modernise and have to flee due to fighting, which is why not every Nuer in the film has it.

Tribal markings of either dinker or nuer (I'm not sure which one). Part of the problem is that the scaring identifies you as part of one of the tribes and as the war is between these two tribes a lot of people are scared for their lives because if the opposition sees your markings they may kill you.

Ill tell you the problem, same as EVERY country in Africa, every single group wants the whole pie, every politician wants all the power, simple as that, they just cant get along and share, and they never will. Our middle school students could run countries better, and I mean that.

The people of Sudan will starve. The government leaders will grow fat. The people of Sudan will die in 1,000 terrible ways. The government leaders will live long after this conflict has exhausted. You see the people of Sudan are mere pons in a game to make a few men rich and wealthy. This is the story of every government. People of Sudan wake up! You don't need leaders! Be the leaders of your own life's! Strive for individual freedom, not democracy! You don't need a government!

I don't understand. A lot of South Sudanese are muslim, so why do the northern Sudanese want them out of their country when they are muslim as well? I assume they are all Sunni, so I can't see as to where the hatred comes from. They all serve Allah, and this should be reason enough for peace between them.

I truly appreciate the purpose of this, but I am really averse to the narrator's tone. Describing it as a "hard and brutal place", as though these are its intrinsic qualities, is not fair, in my opinion. And also, he contrasts "Arab" with "Christian", which draws an incorrect analogy--- that is, an ethnicity with a religion.
@IanCoxAfrica

It IS a hard and brutal place and that's an intrinsic quality. Also, are you sure he didn't say Arab Muslim north vs. Christian south?
