China's LGBTQAI+ Couples Completing Their Families Using Surrogacy

Surrogacy and LGBTQAI+ rights, both lie in the legally grey area in a socially conservative China. But there are couples like Hanson and Wu, a gay couple from Beijing, who are willing to take the risk to build their family.
It only took two years for Hanson and Wu, to hold their baby, after they opted for surrogacy. Hanson and Wu are part of China’s LGBTQAI+ community, which is estimated to be the largest in the world.
The Chinese state neither denounces, nor promotes LGBTQAI+ individuals, but the population is not legally allowed to marry or adopt as a couple. Couples who want to have a child are forced to seek surrogates and fertility treatment abroad - which are prohibitively expensive.

So sad that they literally stole his child. That is just social pressure and the massive pressure family gives culturally. There is a time to leave your family... it is when they steal your child

How dare you take the child of a family, no matter the gender or whatever?! The outrageous act has made me furious for the parents. I feel bad for the couple. I, from my point of view would have fought the parents but as the system in China or Asia itself is totally different from South America I have no control over this.

To leave it ambiguous just means that it'll continue to stay the way it is, it's not helping the future LGBT individuals. Also, there have been countless studies in gay parents and single parents and they've all come to the same conclusion that there isn't any difference to heterosexual parents. That doctor isn't a psychologist or psychiatrist, so she speaks from pseudo science and not actual science. For all the advances China has made they're still far behind when it comes to social progress. Wish these families nothing but the best. Also just want to add that China is reporting a decline in birth rates, and have a long haul when it comes to taking care of their elderly...letting people have children through surrogacy might help.

This is just propaganda, china is much more lgbt freindly than you think. In cities like beinjing and Hong Kong they are much more common. Ofcourse there are lgbg discrimination but it's still less than the US. Jin xing the most famous talk show host in China often refer to as chinese Oprah is a transgender woman. China decriminalized homosexuality when it was still developing while some developed nations in Europe still criminalized it.

I get that they have strong respect for their parents but the fact that they paid for the surrogacy, egg donation, and fees but their parents took the child bothers me. Maybe it’s due to my American views but at that point my parents would just have to deal with it. That’s super weird when you are able to take care of your child but because your parents say no you just give the kid to them.

They probably did that because of society. Because society around them will talk and give them a hard time if they know two gay men are raising a kid together

Probably just because of the living location. This kid is in the age of preschool, real family wouldn't struggling with how many dad always. China has household register system. Many reality issues to deal with.

I agree with you about feel uncomfortable about the grandparents taking care the kids during your American views. But culturelly, in China, it is a normal sitution about the grandparents take care the kids. Chinese people are hard get off work on time or have to make more money . I would love to explain why they love to make money. Not just because they love money, it is because they can not be poor during to the seciety system. Everthing needs money and it is not cheap. In the United States, kids only need to go to school, but in China, they have to have extra classes, personal tutors and whatever a lot of casts. As these children's only parent, they have to make more money as 2 people to give their children normal life. Maybe in the US, they do not have strong competitive, but in China, they have.

Practise what you preach, doctor lady: "However, the iconic symbol of Daoism, the taijitu (太极图), includes an element of Yin within Yang, and conversely of Yang within Yin. An individual thus already has both forces residing in him/herself even before being supplemented by those from another person. This is confirmed by medical science which has discovered that males produce female hormones like oestrogen and progesterone and females produce male ones such as testosterone and androstenedione. This concept lies in stark contrast with the Abrahamic religions in which a strict dichotomy between male and female is presumed and enforced. A harmonious relationship between two people of the same sex is conceivable when there is a healthy and complementary balance of Yin and Yang elements both within and between the couple. This is certainly borne out in the real world where there are countless examples of harmonious, long-term gay relationships, just as there are volatile, transient heterosexual ones where presumably the elements of Yin and Yang are in discord and disarray."

It’s so weird to see the response to this video. If this story was taking place in America, surely vice and the ppl commenting would have much to say about how bigoted Americans are but bc it’s taking place in another country where the ppl openly don’t accept gays and their books still say it’s wrong.. then it’s ok and they’re not homophobic or bigoted? Liberal logic is whack

I'm chinese. I think most of us supports the legalization of homosexual people. But I cannot accept they use commercial surrogacy. People's body should not be used as a tool, as mean of production. legalization of surrogacy would definately lead to a systemetic exploition of women. I can even imagine "surrogacy companies" exploiting poor mothers.

Not really. They do not have a window for "adopting for same-sex couples", but they can adopt alone. In that case, only one of the couple would have the surveillance right.

Adopting isn’t really easy or a thing for natural born citizens in most countries. Americans have a system where adoption is easy but it’s not available in other countries the same way.

I found this video very interesting and informative as it relates to China. And I agree as it was stated that it will take several generations for China to catch and accept same sex couples as well as children of same sex couples. I can just imagine the discrimination a child would receive in school on a daily basis. It would not be healthy for that child and might even be detrimental. Seems to me that moving out of China is the best decision to make for the sake of the children of LGBTQ families.

Children need a mother and a father. There is a reason only men and women can create new life together naturally. How selfish and gross do you have to be, to turn children into a product you order and pay for? Thats sick. Adoption is one thing...when you take a child in that doenst have parents anymore for some tragic reason, you help a little, but if you are the reason the child is missing a mother or father figure, then you are cruel! A child is NOT A RIGHT.
@agees924
