@ActSmart BeSmart thats what happens when people are forced to live at work. I had 4 jobs and two kids that i almost never saw. Had roommates that looked after them in between their jobs. Just to pay rent, buy food and gas. I didn't even have cable or internet. Pay people a decent wage or, better yet, a UBI, and let parents actually raise their own kids instead of a cobbled together series of schools, babysitters and day care workers or no one at all depending on economic circumstances. I hated working that much, never seeing my kids and trying to explain the reason i was never home was to keep a roof over their heads and food in their bellies.

This happened to me in Georgia (North Atlanta) I was pulled over over 25 times in the span of 2 years when I was a softmore-senior in high-school. It happened twice or 3 times per week sometimes and the officers often recognized my name before I gave my license. They always arrived at my house parties about 2 hours in. I skipped over 100 days of school my junior year; although I passed all my classes. I now realize the connection. (I'm white btw) It was harassment.

I was so confused I was being kind and respectful to them and they were treating me like cattle and told me if I don’t go to a “tobacco education class” two towns over I would get a warrant. talk about crazy. While I am morally compelled to vehemently object to this type of policing, I have to admit that the mid now being 21 and in jail on an assault charge rather suggests that the polices assessment of him was not innaccurate. Though the handling of him and his family was unconscionable, its possible that a genuinely effective program could be devoped using this model if the police would not take such an adversarial role in response to the data.

The officers just see that kid as a “future criminal”, but maybe most kids that have the same home life as the “troubled teen” would act the same way in their shoes. Instead of using all this resources on planning to lock kids up, they could use the same resources to provide for the community. Maybe even create some fun and creative volunteer opportunities for kids to learn how to garden in a community garden, plant trees, hiking, camping, building, etc. Instead, you would rather see kids locked up because of the skewed judgement of a public service? The whole Real ID law basically outlawed homelessness at the federal level under the guise of "National Security" all the while politicians bused and flew their homeless (some VETS) to states with strict anti-homeless laws where some people without criminal records became felons literally overnight.
