Greek Islanders Want the Refugee Crisis Over - and the Migrants Gone

Five years into Europe's refugee crisis, the multi-billion Euro refugee deal with Turkey has broken down. Less than 2% of the refugees slated for resettlement in the rest of Europe have left Greece, as European nations refuse to implement the bloc's continent-wide asylum policy. At the same time, almost no failed asylum claimants have been returned to Turkey, while the number of new arrivals have spiked, doubling in the past year.
As a result, Greece has been left to cope with the crisis alone, with the bankrupt Southeast European nation transformed into the continent's open-air prison camp. On the island of Samos, where 7000 migrants and refugees live in squalid conditions on the hillside overlooking a town of 7000 Greeks, locals are enraged.
With the tourist economy devastated, islanders feel abandoned by both the Greek government in Athens and the European Union as a whole. The situation’s about to explode: and local islanders blame the mostly Northern European NGOs and journalists they accuse of exacerbating the migrant crisis, and ruining the image of their island overseas.
VICE News travelled to Samos to meet the refugees, migrants and locals living in uncomfortable proximity as tensions mount, and local officials demand action from the capital. With tensions at boiling point, this once-idyllic island is the frontline of Greece and Europe’s migrant crisis.

@@user-gy5gk9mg7f mass migration isn't something new. Throughout history people have moved as a result of wars and/or natural disasters (Irish famine, Holocaust, etc). And by the way, all the instability and geopolitical tensions you see in the world today are a direct result of colonialism and foreign interface from last Century (Iran, North Korea, Palestine, Afghanistan, Syria, etc). It's very difficult to "rebuild your home" when someone else poured pure rot into your foundation for their benefit or keep lighting anything you build on fire. Do you know how many foreign "dicks" there are in Syria? If it weren't for international interference (Iran, Russia, Turkey, Saudia Arabia) the war/revolution would've ended long time ago. The refugee crisis is only a symptom. If you really want someone to blame, study some history and understand how the disease came to be in the 1st place... But I guess it's just easier to make racist comments online

It's awful. Greece is in a no win situation. The worst part is seeing compassionate reporters and volunteers come help the refugees, criticize Greece, and then fly back to their big homes with no refugees on their lawns. One volunteer I met was from Martha's Vineyard and spoke about how heartless Greece was. I asked her how her parents and neighbors would've behaved if three times their island's population was occupied by refugees. How much compassion will remain if they can't continue their routines and the life they got used to the last 40 years?

As much as I dislike Fidesz, it's nowhere near as anti-semitic, or authoritarian, as either them, or the National Socialist German Worker's Party. Also, shouldn't all politicians be nationalists? Focusing on their own nation's prosperity, on the well-being of the very people that elect them, first and foremost? Or are you really such a fuckwit, that you conflate nationalism, a very broad political idea that merged into a lot of different ideologies (and is not mutually exclusive with pacifism), with nazism, a set of very specific ideas that stem from a bastardization of Nietsche's ideas? Also, did you really think the Cold War was to free Eastern Europe from communism? Then why did the US ignore Hungary's cry for freedom when Nasser decided that the Suez Canal, being in Egypt, belongs to Egypt? Truman Doctrine, my ass... You do have one point, though. No refugee wanted to come here, true. But the problem is, the EU would've forced us to take them in, if we let them. With quotas. They would've violated the "refugees'" supposed "right to travel", as well as a nation's right to refuse residency to anyone they deem incompatible with it's society. Because it's an oligarchic, elitist, good-for-nothing corrupt shitstain of an organization, that has no qualms about strongarming supposedly sovereign states to do their bidding.

Because we’re so small, we can’t just admit all the migrants into Greece and act as if there won’t be any tension regarding cultural differences. As a matter of fact, Greek extremist groups like Golden Dawn have risen because the tensions are so extreme. The migrants don’t speak the same language as the natives, don’t practice the same religion, might not know the history of the country, and don’t practice the customs. I’d have a hard time acting as if Greece would look the same as now if we continued with this. Keep in mind, this has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH RACE. Blame American Foreign Policy and Regime Change Obessessed U.S. Administrations. I feel sorry for a country like Greece because it doesn't have anything to do with the wars in the Middle East and Africa. However, I definitely blame the U.S. and its allies to a lesser extent (U.K, France, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE,Turkey etc..) as well as Iran and Russia on the opposite side for playing deadly Proxy conflicts purely to satisfy Geopolitical interests. A country like Greece or Sweden or Denmark etc...(i.e. small peaceful countries that have nothing with this international competition for power) should not bear the brunt of this refugee crisis.
