Honestly, Nigerians have to be some of the most dedicated fighters I have ever seen. I don't know the name of the village but in the year 2000 1st Para of the British Army found a platoon of Nigerian peacekeepers there after 6 months of being forgotten about by the UN. They had been living off the village's people and only a few still presented themselves like proper infantrymen. Even after 1st Para left Sierra Leone the Nigerians stayed and fought on. There's a video by the front that explains it much better Link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioachXqep7ahecU

Thanks for these series on Boko Haram. The conflict will soon be over once Buhari is sworn in as the president of Nigeria. The question that has not been asked or should be asked by the media is: why the sudden ramp up against Boko Haram by the Nigerian military and the neighboring countries' armies when it became obvious that Buhari was going to defeat President Goodluck Jonathan in the presidential election? As a native of Nigeria who now resides outside of the country, but lived in Nigeria for 30years; I believe, the fear of Buhari as a former military general who participated in all but two Nigerian military coups put pressure on those corrupt military generals who have been running the Nigeria army as their private business under president Goodluck Jonathan. As for the neighboring countries. They all have had different experiences with Buhari when he was the commanding officer for the north-east (Boko Haram hotspot region) of Nigeria in the 1980s, and as a military dictator in 1983-1985. Take Chad for example. It is my opinion that the reason Chad suddenly provided troops to go into Nigeria is because they have not forgotten 1984. For Cameroon, look up: Bakassi Peninsula; and for Niger, its border with Nigeria is with Buhari's home state, Katsina, and Sokoto state. Basically, my point is, Nigerian military used to be the stabilizing force in West Africa, and Africa as a whole until 1999 when it embraced democracy for the fourth time in its history. As a way to deter or discourage any military coups, the civilian governments since 1999 have been systematically under funding the military and allowing generals to steal money for private use. With Buhari coming in, many of these generals that are corrupt and unscrupulous will be fired, and the neighboring countries want to be seen in good light. (see Liberia and Sierra Leone conflicts. Without Nigeria, they would have lasted longer. Spent 10 years and over $9 Billion in Liberia alone, without international assistance).
@AdegokeM9 жыл бұрын
Feyi Joseph No Feyi, I have not been reading or watching Yahoo News. I get my news from reading Nigerian Newspapers which you can get online and Channel news, which is equally online. If there is nothing sudden, why did the government start to buy more weapons? For instance, the T72 tanks were bought in February after the government had asked for the postponement of the presidential elections for another six weeks. And the reason the U.S. refused to sell weapons to Nigeria is because the U.S. believes there are Boko Haram sympathizers in the Nigerian army, and Jonathan was not in full control. For me, I don't have friends in the Nigerian military as you do. But this has nothing to do with my analysis of how the Nigerian state has prosecuted the Boko Haram insurgency. Since you have brought it up, I need to mention how this affects me. I have two cousins in the Nigerian army - both are officers from NDA. One is right now on assignment with the African Union. Also, my uncles - three of them fought the Biafrian War - of the three, one was a conscript that was picked up on Western Avenue in Surulere, Lagos.
@Idiolectic9 жыл бұрын
Feyi Joseph I'm from the US, and the reason we didn't provide anything past basic arms, ammo, and training officers, was because there's too much corruption in the Nigerian military-- Until a anti-corruption campaign is mandated it will be like that, and we won't be handing weapons over to corrupt officials. We also don't give other countries our tanks, drones, and attack helicopters in general, so even expecting it then was a mistake.
@Idiolectic9 жыл бұрын
***** I wasn't insulting Nigeria, I was insinuating that your military is (For a matter of fact) run by corrupt officials, that deserve not the light of day. Just because you'd rather be supported by Russia, and China, two countries known only to assist others if they have resources they want for themselves, doesn't mean you're any better off. I told you why our lawmakers decided against giving you further support-- And what are you even talking about, that we refused to give strategic support, and locations of BH outposts; We provided as much as you allowed us to, that is until YOUR leaders decided to cut off deals with us, and sent our officers back home. We were supposed to be training another battalion of personnel, when your leaders decided that we weren't helping you enough. Of course we're not going to give you Cobras, and Abrams, your military has been accused of human rights abuse, so why would anyone in their right mind provide you military hardware; Oh right, China gave you tanks... The same country that killed 120+ million of its own people in the past 50 years. What a FANTASTIC ally. We're not allowed to give human rights abusers arms that they might use on their own people, especially not with Nigeria's history in the past few decades. FOUR military coups in the past 30 years, with generals still serving that initiated them?! Haha, you're funny.

TheGreekSpawn Lol you idiot, do you think that boko haram follows the same laws almost every other country has signed for? IED doesn't need metal, it can bee sheer explosive. Most of the explosives might have metal in it because of the pact or because they want the pressure of the explosion to push the piece of metal through something such as a tank floor. It also could be just tnt packed with rocks on top of it without any metal in it, so running with metal detector would be useless. Come and speak something when you know more about explosives.

TheGreekSpawn There are IEDs that cannot be detected by metal detectors easily

TheGreekSpawn Do you mean mine flails? combat mine flails haven't been produces since WW2 these days you could only get ones for "humanitarian demining" meaning that they wouldn't have much armor and wouldn't be that useful in a combat situation, also lets be real here bokoharam is a small terrorist organization, they don't have the resources to cover a large area with mines so regular demining equipment should be enough, and some of these IED's are remote controlled and not triggered by pressure.
