50 years ago today, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of Loving -- Mildred and Richard Loving, who successfully sued the state of Virginia, forcing it to recognize their interracial marriage. That landmark case overturned laws against interracial marriages all across the country.

@@rattatouilletherat I didn't know about her, either, until a few years ago. She was referred to fondly and respectfully as the First Lady of the Pentagon during his tenure as Defense Secretary. She has such charm, intellect, beauty, poise, and innate class that I believe most people were totally disarmed by her and her (understandable) fear of undermining her husband's career likely would not have happened. I'm just glad to see that he was determined and patient, knowing she was his soul mate, in spite of her fears and the external pressures I'm sure they each faced (her father apparently highly disapproved of the match not because he was White but because he was Jewish, which is like WTF for me).

I have always loved the sort of symbolic coincidence in this case: Their name is literally "Loving." Love transcends any race, culture, or any other bullshit you can come up with to divide the people. Love is the primary cause of marriage. So how fitting that the case that codified interracial marriage be named for "Loving?" As in, loving is bigger than hating!

I’m the child of an interracial couple and it breaks my heart to hear the story of the woman whose family prayed for her not to get pregnant. My life as a mixed person has been incredible and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. It’s amazing to be able to access two cultures and I also think it’s made me a more tolerant person. When the other woman said “I don’t do they,” it really resonated with me. I can’t “do they” either and I’m so grateful for that.

I'm black and have access to two cultures too. If I have children I wouldn't want to raise them in a predominately white country due to the struggles they will have. And yes, I have seen many bi-racial people struggle with identity and acceptance of themselves but this tend not to be the case for bi-racial children from black mothers.

i think many bi racial children suffer growing up because other children make them pick sides which is so so wrong and its always mainly black children that have made them pick. its also a sad reality that black fathers are never held accountable for not educating their own children about who they are, family ect as much as white mothers not educating themselves on certain things when they have mixed raced children i think as parents they need to do more to install self love ect. into their children to make them feel less pressure and more proudness of who they are.

I was the product of miscegenation (my mom was Native American, and my dad was Japanese). If I hadn't been born premature I would have been born after Oklahoma finally took miscegenation laws off the book. My mom so desperately wanted me to be treated fairly that she asked one of her best friends who was white to go to all of my teacher-parent conferences and such so I could pass as white more easily. She pushed me towards academic goals and I know how much she would have given to hear directly from my HS and College professors that those goals were met. These laws needlessly hurt so many people and families. And, their legacy still continues to hurt innocent people 💔.

I live in Norway, my dad is Tamil and my mom is Norwegian. My moms father has never met my dad, and has said he never will. He doesn’t want to meet him because he is not white and an “immigrant”, my dad is very dark skinned so I’m pretty brown too. I didn’t know this until now (I’m 16) and I’m very sad about this thing with my grandpa. He didn’t come to my mothers marriage or my baptism in church, he didn’t attended my brothers baptism either. This is making me especially sad because my aunt (my moms sister) is getting married to a white man, and my grandpa showed up to the marriage and the baptism of both of my cousins. And it’s weird because my grandpa is very nice to me even though I am not white in the skin, so I don’t understand why he still refuses to meet my dad. I also remember asking my dad why he never came with us to family dinner and he said “your grandpa doesn’t like me”, I asked him why and he said I should ask my mother. So I asked her, she got upset with him and told him to stop saying that to me and my brother. My mom always came with us when my father had family dinner, so it was confusing to me. Anyway, I am very proud of both of my cultures. So proud of having a bunad and a saree hanging next to each other in my closet.

No law, no protest, no speech is ever gonna make racism go away, only examples of love and friendships will instil the deeper understanding of life in the coming generations.. Your "deal with it head on" attitude is like picking a scab of a wound again and again and it'll never heal, racism isn't a physical thing that'll be erradicated with force it needs to be broken down on an individual basis. I’m from LA and I’ll never forget taking a trip to London in 1991 and noticing how interracial couples were much more prevalent in the UK compared to what I ever saw in the USA. Even to this day. I rarely see interracial couples here. But in London I swear I’d see them daily. It was just one of many experiences while abroad that made me feel as if Europeans in general were more advanced than Americans.

@Beautify em : The recent shooting in Buffalo NY would seem to say the racial divide appears to be growing. With the shooter acknowledging what Fox News hosts have been saying about the Great Replacement of whites with minorities. But then there’s the viral video of the Lyft driver who declines to be the ride for a white couple in Pennsylvania when the woman gets in the car and declares “Oh you’re white, you’re normal and can speak English!”. The Lyft drivers response is perfect as he refuses to give them a lift home. Unfortunately that was an isolated incident. Whereas Fox gets televised all across the states :-( Yep we still have a long way to go. Too many people here have chosen not to use critical thinking for all decisions they make.

He made amends with the rest of his children who refused to help pay for his funeral and my friend's husband is the one that paid for it even though his father-in-law hated him simply because of his skin color. Her husband and I convinced her to go to the hospital she was conflicted and I said you don't want to regret not going even if nothing resolves you will still have that regret on your heart and you don't want that. I went with her to pick her father's ashes up and it was very sad because the father she had known growing up was not the loving caring man that she remembered. And I felt so horrible for her husband who his only sin was his skin and yet still had such a heart that he was not going to let some man that hated him be buried in a pauper's grave.

maybe not seek permission but you still care about those closest to you (mom, dad, brother, sister, grandma, grandpa, uncle, aunt, cousin) and you want them to like your partner. It always hurts someone when a barrier forms between you and your family because of your choices but many countries have made it clear now that a choice can prevail and you can just go on and do what you think is right (even if your family doesn't like it). I myself have suggested the possibility of marriage outside our circle, beyond that of our common practice which is endogamy. We have tribes in our country and people prefer to be in an intimiate relationship with the those of the same tribe. I don't mind it but I don't want my life to be planned or certain choices to be expected so marriage outside our group would be interesting to me.

As a mixed race child I can say that this still goes on. It started with my Grandparents, my grandmother was a Greek-Cypriot, she married first another Greek man who use to beat her black and blue, but that was considered fine with her family because he was Greek. When she found the courage to leave and eventually divorce him after he threated her life at knifepoint she was shunned by her family (this was in 1930s England). She met my Grandfather, as English as they come and fell in love, but because he wasn't Greek they hated him and told my Grandmother to her face, we want nothing to do with you. She married him regardless, because he made her happy. (Many stories from my mother of laughing while cooking together and sweet little footnotes on baking recipes). My mother was raised in a primarily Greek household (Greek traditions, foods, spoke Greek at home) but sadly my Grandfather died of Lung Cancer when she was little, so it was only my Grandmother and mother. According to stories my mum's told me, no sooner after a week of my Grandfather's passing my Grandmother's family wrote to her telling her she deserved what had happened to my Grandfather. How she stayed so strong for my mother throughout it I don't know. Sadly, she followed my Grandfather not too long after, passing of breast cancer when my mother was sixteen. Unfortunately that meant she was forced to stay with my Grandmother's family (Grandad's family weren't as bad but cut ties with him for marrying my grandmother). They took every opportunity to make sure she married a Greek man, taking her on supervised dates with potential matches, not allowing her to have any male friends of a different race, etc. When my mother fell in love and married my father, they threw a hissy-fit, tv's plates, forks were thrown at her. He's as Irish as they come and the racist remarks that were thrown his way, oh boy! He'll be out drinking every night, he's gonna beat you, he'll get you pregnant and then leave you, etc. Yet much like my Grandmother, my mother loved my mother and married him anyways. And that resulted in me. Unlike my siblings I'm a lot darker in skintone, more-so than my mother, having a complexation closer to my Grandmother. Whereas my siblings are white-passing (I.e., they look Irish at a glance). When I met my partner's parents for the first time, the first thing they asked was how good is my English. Followed by a rather invasive question of, if we were to have kids (me and my partner) who would be the donor (I'd give them the benefit of the doubt, but the way they said it, in tone and how it came across meant "we don't want dark grandkids"). Thankfully, I found my own pillar of strength in my partner like my Grandmother and Mother before me, he was quick to call his parents out much to my surprise as he's usually a very quite and even somewhat shy person normally.

I'm mixed race myself and my mom told me how much discrimination she had to face back in the 80s when she had my oldest sister and being married to a black man while being a white woman with a mixed raced child. This was also in Germany and mind you, my German grandparents were 16 and 13 when world war 2 ended (so very much grown up with the Nazi mindset). To say they weren't happy that she had 4 mixed raced kids, is an understatement. Growing up in Germany, it took me a long time to accept my skin color when my own family treated me like I was inferior to them.

Lady in purple clearly had some work done on her face but it's very well-done and understated. She's definitely had a face-lift and botox but it doesn't look awful (we've all seen pics of celebs who overdo their plastic surgery). Her surgery complements her existing appearance and streamlines it, instead of creating features that were never there.

Klara being very transparent about the racial divide is so prevalent and true. Im mixed and my grandmother recounts her upbringing and its very apparent my moms side of the family was/is very uneducated about just how unaware white people are of the society they set up. Not seeing color or not caring the the sexuality of people is NOT acceptance. Its not diversity, its not anti-racism. Its very refreshing to see interracial couples where the white counter part is very aware of the complexities that come with being a person of color, because so many people think that just because they arent in the kkk or aren't advocating for our death does not mean they arent racist or making the world safe. My mother has only mixed kids and she is so uncaring and unaffected by how we grew up in a hyper white community and the issues we faced. She never thought through moving us away from our other side of the family, never gave us opportunities to connect with our culture, and only learned about what it meant to be mixed by white people's interpretation....in the deep south. We still have such a long way to go with racism.

Mexicans aren’t racial, 99% of us aren’t! Mexico itself is an interracial country since the 1500s! The Catholic Church and Spanish empire allowed inter racial marriages since the mid 1500s in Mexico and all Spanish America! A Spanish man could marriage an African, Filipino or black woman or vice Versa. Mexicans are very accepting of everyone, as long as they are nice to us we are usually nice to them. I’m Mexican/Native American, 56% Aztec genetics and 44% Spanish European! Mexico is basically a mixed race country, with 80-90%+ of the population being European and Native American, and African mix!
