And insurance rates go up every time you make a claim....and there's the chance you get dropped by your insurance company after too many claims. It's easy for you to say 'Isn't this what insurance is for?' because you're never going to have to deal with any of this. You live next to a road? How about if you lived at the bottom of a hill on that road and had neighbors up that hill that had several junker cars illegally parked on that hill. And every once in awhile the parking brake or brick chock holding them in place on that hill gave up and one would roll down the hill and into your house. How many times are you going to tolerate it, how many times are you going to deal with your insurance company for damages, how many times are you going to swallow your insurance rates going up before you make that call to report those illegally parked junker cars up that hill?

Cant say im too fond of those rich asshats, but they do have some valid points about boat drifting into their docks causing massive damage. That aspect aside i know people dream about living on the water and what not but its not cheap, boats require a lot of upkeep. Usually needing to being pulled to dry dock to be cleaned and repainted/epoxied every few years. Something a lot of these guys don't do for a decade if at all. Which is why they end up taking on water and getting condemned. Proper way of going about it is simply renting a dock slot and doing proper maintenance/upkeep to the boat.

I lived anchored out in Richardson bay there for a couple years. It should be a basic human right to be able to anchor. I finished high school while anchored out. I am now a home owner, outright. People on the hill in a 3 million dollar home telling me what to do was a horrible feeling. I never caused any grief to anyone, and often helped people in fancy boats when they had issues. Lawmakers need to think again before destroying communities. 90 percent of the people anchored out were functional good people.

Did most of the people there properly dispose of their "waste water" and garbage though? Like I know with a boat you either need to buy a boat that comes pre-equipped with a septic tank and water hook up line or retrofit the boat later. Then you need to dispose of the waste at a water hook up station every month. While I know it's legal to dispose of "waste water" when someone is 15 miles away from shore, those boats don't look like they're 15 miles away from shore. Also I imagine it's expensive for people to dispose of their used coffee tins, paper towls, plastic wrappers and such in an environmentally friendly way, so I can see why some,of the anchor outs would not want to do that. I'm not trying to troll you, I genuinely don't know so that's why I'm asking you.

I'm from San Francisco. To give you more background here, the waterfront homes in Marin County (in the Tiburon area), are worth an average of $5M - $15M. The people who live there are not just rich or millionaires, they are wealthy beyond measure. As a San Francisco native who has watched my city price out generations of residents, it's almost comical to watch these people who live on the Marin County waterfront complain about anchor-outs. My wife and I lived in our sailboat there for a while. Met some amazing people with amazing stories. We were getting our boat ready to sail south. We were treated very different because we were anchor outs. The police threatened us. Everyone of the anchor outs were great though. We would hang out with them at the church or at the coffee shop. Many were working jobs and coming back to their boat. The county made it very difficult for everyone to live out there. Shut down all the docks except one. Over 100 boats and only 1 tiny dinghy dock. Fun. The harbormaster was not very liked. He got many boats destroyed. That’s what the county was paying him to do. Many lost their homes and lived in tents. Even kids. I know everyone that was interviewed. Amazing people! Miss this place so much. A strange balance between very rich and very poor.

If a boat is genuinely in poor enough condition that it will sink and turn into a source of marine pollution. Then ultimately the reality is that many could end up homeless regardless of anyone interfering. If the lifestyle is sustained where they continue proper maintenance on that boat it should obviously be allowed. But for the boats shown, I can't help but think that this situation was always going to be just temporary and never sustainable indefinitely. A nice way to help would be to purchase the boats from owners before destroying them and offer welfare and housing to those who need it.

If you need a job why not just do some temping for a while? All you need is the clothes on your back. If you go to a temp agency in the morning they'll give you a job assignment and loan you the personal protective equipment if you don't have it. (Usually they loan people a safety vest, some "green triangle" steel toed rubber boots and any other equipment you might need.) Of course it's good later to buy a cell phone (so you can call them to get jobs the day before) as well as your own safety vest and some regular "green triangle" shoes (they sell some cheap at walmart for between $50 to $100) although that's not necessary to start with. I know it's hard to get a part or full time job when you don't have money to start with. I know even McDonald's asks people to buy around $100 worth of work clothes to start off with.

I lived in a community that was split into rich, middle class and poor. I remember being invited to a friends and their family was “going out on the yacht.” We didn’t go anywhere, just stayed tied to the dock. They pay 500 a month to have these boats “docked.” They never take them out, they don’t take trips, nothing. I was middle class and went fishing regularly. I remember asking where they went and the families and yacht owners would almost get angry or offended. Years they would pay to have boats in during the summer and out stored in the winter. What a wasted. Easily 200+ high end Luxury boats that only moved by the wake of charted fishing boats.

I live off the Richardson Bay. I live in a house. I was brought up here, been here since 1957. All the complaints about the anchor-outs are valid to different degrees. But that's not the end of the story. Many of these anchor-out folks have been in their water boat homes for 15 or more years. If there was a law against it, it was never enforced. I question the fairness of letting people live in an environment for that long and then, one day, to just declare their way of living is illegal, confiscating their water abodes, leaving them with absolutely nothing. It is not really practical to offer them "affordable" land homes because southern Marin is 100% built out. There is nowhere to build low income housing to give to each boat owner or family. I have a different and maybe more charitable idea- Go out to the anchor-outs and take a census of boats and boat owners/family. Grandfather them in for their lifetime or the boat's lifetime, which ever is shorter. If the owner/family leaves their boat or moves the boat to a new location, there is no coming back. A boat may be technically sold but no new tenant of a boat may be permitted to live on the boat. Over time this population will dwindle to the end. It has to, no body lives forever, and people do leave for another place. My wife asked, what about the boat sunk in the mud? She's not from the bay. Let me help here. That boat was not stuck in the mud! The photo was taken at low tide. Big deal! Go to the "legal" houseboats tied up, like the smarmy guy in the video. HIS houseboat gets "stuck" in the mud too a low tide, unless he's on pilings. Many of the "legal" moored houseboats are not on pilings and will also sit on the mud in low tides! That photo was provided to influence you without understanding life on tidal water. My idea results in no relocation problem, no wrecking of a person's living space, no rendering a person homeless, and a sure timeline to an end of anchor-outs. it's done with no animosity or pain to these independent folks whose only crime is living as lone solitary people on the bay. Lets give a little folks!

I live in similar place, where the skyrocketing rent is almost impossible for most people. Homeowners complain when they can't find painters, babysitters, maintenance people, landscapers, when the coffee shop down the street closes at 2pm for lack of staff... but it doesn't occur to them that none of those people they've come to rely on for their pleasant daily lives can live anywhere near their neighborhoods. There was a "created" neighborhood near my old apartment. 100+ luxury homes on curated streets with names like Sunshine Avenue, with "intentional commerce" on the Main Street. Think cute coffee shop, tailor, local clothing and jewelry, organic groceries, hidden parking to not mess up the aesthetic of the street, all the "nice" things the residents wanted. The majority of the employees bused in every morning from the surrounding towns a half hour away, because no one working min wage in the "cute" coffee shop was buying a $3mil house in the neighborhood.

I've worked with actual "functioning addicts". A regular job does not pay enough to feed an addiction while also paying for the cost of living, especially not a job at a place that would tolerate someone who was clearly drunk or high at work. I 100% agree. I just wanted to expand. Laws are made up, presented, and decided on by people. Some may have empathy, some may not, some may have a worldview so narrow or such a lack of foresight they do not see the consequences of the policies they vote in. Some may take a more utilitarian ethical approach and decide that such a policy if for the benefit of the “many”. But they are first and foremost human and flawed, so their policies will also be flawed. It’s up to us to change these policies, to bring attention to the wrong, and to come up with solutions to make it right. If you’re dissatisfied, vote, protest, assemble, or hell, run for office yourself. action is key. Hopefully one day we can make a difference 🙏

@@redneckhippiefreak Obviously the anchor outs did break some sorts of laws (probahly some sort of environmental protection laws based around protecting the health of sea creatures) or else the city would not have sent the harbour master out there to destroy the boats. (If nothing else, government officials and lawyers are very careful when it comes to making sure they're not breaking laws and risking the city getting sued for millions of dollars.)

Even having parents who are reasonable and give you good opportunities VS parents who are alcoholics or drug addicted, or not providing any sort of role model. Or even child abuse or molest. The guy in finance doesn't stop and think how lucky he's been from the get go. Sometimes people making bad decisions are doing best given the trauma they've endured. Maybe they're handling it a lot better than the finance guy would had he been through the same starting line.

@@travelingmindful You never know, the guy may have started his life as a caravan rat, anchor rat, homeless etc. Doesn't mean he was given to it on a silver plate. You can make any assumption you want but, many start from nothing, make the correct decisions and move their lives upwards.
