I'm not a drummer but I had the fortune of seeing him give advice to a drummer of the group I was with (all students). After struggling to get the groove right for some time Chancler came in and helped the drummer get it down in a minute. It was like watching a magician at work and I was very sad to hear of his passing years later. What a fantastic musician.

I mean dude hard to understand, his independence between what he was doin top and the crazy bass drum patterns it's like ummmmm???
@erikondrums10 жыл бұрын
In a interview he said that the reason he's got the cymbals like that was after a gig with miles and after a fantastic solo and gig, the bassplayer said "really good solo! Too bad noone could SEE what you were playing." After that he changed the cymbal setup. It also became an advantage when he did sessionwork and could place the music notes infront of him. It made it easier to play the music and look at the music director apparentley.

He was a really nice guy. In 1989 I took my 2 children who were toddlers at the time to see him at a drum clinic in Omaha. He spent 10 - 15 minutes answering toddler questions about the drums and Micheal Jackson.

I don't think I would want my crash cymbal to rock back and forth like his does after being hit. When it rocks back and forth like that, it affects the sound. That's just me. I like for a crash to be one steady sound, like Bonham's crashes.
@thegayge11 жыл бұрын
Yeah, he's probably wrong.
@drewper7311 жыл бұрын
AJ Donahue What does that even mean? I'm not saying he's "wrong" just b/c he chooses to mount his cymbals differently than I do. All I said was "I don't think I would want my crash cymbal to rock back and forth." There is no "wrong" when it comes to one's personal setup.

the way he sets up cymbals why
@handidrummed9 жыл бұрын
+zackdoom It's more ergonomic to move up to reach something than out. If you look at how much he has to move, it's not all that much.

thanks. They'd probably break easier though
@MatthewParsonsDrumsAndAudio9 жыл бұрын
+zackdoom not necessarily. With proper technique, which he has, they wouldn't be easy to break.

why not
@bmillerdrums8 жыл бұрын
The guy is sponsored by Paiste and has been for a long time so I'm sure he could break as many cymbals as he wanted to. Its so fucked up that they give free shit to the players that need it the least.

This is so unbelievably messy! He seems like a cool dude, but man you can hear his brain catching up to his hands all the time. He falls in and out of the 1 and gets confused a lot. Guess soloing is not really his thing.
@drewper7311 жыл бұрын
I really don't think there is a 1 throughout. The pulse changes a lot to me. The rhythms are very African. But I think his soloing is fine. Ndugu has nothing to prove; not as long as he's been playing.
@jazzmies10 жыл бұрын
This is the nearest Ewe and Yoruba drumming I've ever heard with drum kit. Another beautiful guy - Brice Wassy, UUH!
@SlikkTim10 жыл бұрын
I guess you need to stop considering the only right form of soloing is when it sounds like it's been sequenced on a computer. This is absolutely beautiful organic playing.
@XxStrongDrums1996xX10 жыл бұрын
You're right. I always think it's hilarious when people absolutely refuse to criticize famous drummers. Obviously, they're not going to change as the result of one comment on KZbin (which they won't likely see), but it's an important discussion to have, as people can learn. Ndugu displays beautiful and organic playing here, as has been said, but that does not change the fact that it's littered with phrase that Ndugu has not adequately trained himself to play. It's an immature style, analogous to an incredibly intellectual individual who chooses to speak like an imbecile.
