I grew up in the 80's decade. I'm telling you people, the 80's was the best. It was wild, good, and much more interesting than what is going on today. I feel badly for those growing up today. 1990-1995 was pretty good too, but 1980-1989 was good times man.

It was W-I-D-E open back then. So much freedom which is exemplified by it also being THE most artistically creative times of this once great country's history which is exemplified by how by how good music, TV & movies were...then unlike now which is just repackaged derivations of the 70's & 80's.

Angus Orvid! I remember all the ‘pay to play ‘ venues, and it was expensive even then! ‘Come see our band’ fliers being handed out every few feet, while getting to the Whiskey to help set up my friends band with load-in! Such fun! Loved your comment!

Just standing around the Rainbow, Roxy & Whisky was wild! Just tons of people everywhere. Looking to hookup was probably #1 thing. If you were in a band - hot chicks would take care of the whole band because they rarely had money in early years. I dated the DJ at the Rainbow & got to hide under the dj booth & hand him records to play in the upstairs area. Etc. I could write a book!

A few days away from my 14th birthday I saw GnR (touring Appetite for Destruction) open for Motley (touring Girls, Girls, Girls) around the middle of November 1987 about 20 miles away from home at the Civic Coliseum in Knoxville TN. GnR were a mess man. You could tell they could play, but too much partying had them sounding like speed metal one minute and a dragging cassette the next. I saw Slash walk off his side of the stage and puke, but never stopped playing...the sign of a true professional! Another member, that I won't name, I saw him walk off stage, snort a line of coke, and RUN back on stage afterwards. I was not impressed over all, but once I heard what they could do in the studio, I was hooked. That album is one of the very few I can listen to start to finish and never want to skip a song. The Crue were great, as they always were when I saw them anyways. I saw them (touring Shout at the Devil) open for Ozzy (touring Bark at the Moon) in Nashville TN sometime in May of 1984 (my best friends mom drove us 3.5 hours each way for that show). Then again during the last part of September in 1985 (touring Theater of Pain), with Y&T (touring Open Fire and a few songs from Down for the Count if memory serves), again going to Nashville TN to see them. Then the show I mentioned with GnR. The last time I saw them was in Knoxville TN again around the first part of April in 1990. The Crue (touring Dr. Feelgood) had Faster Pussycat opening for them (touring Wake me when it's over). I went out and bought that Faster Pussycat album, and their self-titled one the next day. That self-titled album is pure gold to me. It's what I consider "sleaze rock" at its very best!. I would love to go see the new tour with Def Lep., Poison, and Joan Jett, but wow at the price tag for decent seats man! Hats off to them if they can get that for it, but I can't swing that for it. I don't know that I would if I could. All those shows, the memories of them and those times, and the guys in those bands all mean the world to me. They were the sound track to my teen age years pretty much, and for that I am eternally grateful. Those guitar players made me want to pick one up and learn, so I did, not well, but I did. Mick Marrs is, in my opinion, the most underrated and overlooked guitar player of the 1980's. He always played what the song needed, nothing more and nothing less. The crazy part was, when playing live, he always nailed his stuff perfectly. I know it's a bit off topic, but speaking of great guitar players, I saw Cinderella (touring Night Songs) open for Bon Jovi (touring Slippery When Wet) in May-ish 1987. Cinderella was so so so impressive to watch live. I already owned Night Songs (I eventually played that tape so much that I played it till it actually broke). Jeff Labar (R.I.P.) and Tom Kiefer, actually the entire band, was amazing to see and hear. If I did not know they were playing live (you could tell) I would have sworn that they were just lip synching and miming the movements on the instruments. It was that damn close to the album. They sounded just like the album, so impressive. The only other band I've seen that did that was ZZ Top. You could tell those guys knew their material inside and out and could probably play it behind their backs while asleep in a tornado. I liked a few of Bon Jovi's songs, but wasn't a big fan, but my parents made go to the show as the sort of chaperone for my older sister's and future brother in laws date. I didn't even know that Cinderella was opening for them until we got there lol. When it came to Bon Jovi though, I'll give them this, those guys knew how to work the crowd man, seriously they were good at putting on a show. Like the Crue, but in a different/more girl based way. Which made the scenery better for me lol. Musically, they were super, super tight man. Those guys had that shit down pat. There was no running off stage to puke action here. That being said, Jon's vocals were horrible. It honestly sounded like he had inhaled a scuba tank full of helium before coming on stage. You could tell that a lot of time was spent working/fixing things in the studio for sure. He was, what sounded to me like, an octave higher than he should have been. Even with the great showmanship, and the performance being so tight instrumentally, Cinderella blew them off the stage man. Bon Jovi would have been better off staying in the dressing room. So, if you've got this far, and haven't done it already, I can't recommend any higher that you check out Cinderella - Night Songs or Faster Pussycat - Faster Pussycat. If you love that type of music, and can stand some seriously raunchy lyrics and subject matter, you have to check out the band Steel Panther. All their music is great and will totally transport you back in time, even though it's all pretty much newly created stuff. While all of the albums are worth buying, the one to start with has got to be "Feel the Steel". After that, go to the more stripped/unplugged sounds of "Live from Lexxi's Mom's Garage". You will be hooked or hate them by the end of "Death to all butt metal". Yes, I know it's "but"...but...my typing "butt" will make sense after you watch the video for the song. Great tunes man, check them all out if you haven't!

I just realized when Vicky said that Slash played with Willie Basse, that I used to see him play at the warehouses up the street! I didn't realize that Slash was in Black Sheep! Willie used to rent a warehouse where he did regular gigs, and tried out a lot of shit (music) on us youngsters! And I'm surprised Vicky didn't mention Gazarri's, when you guys were talking about the Rainbow, and Whiskey. And the Cat House was on Highland, loved that place! Lot's of bands at that time played there on a nice big stage! And when you see t-shirts, & merch for the "Cat House" that's the club it was from. The one next door to the Whiskey was the Cat Club, lots of fun too, but super tiny, and really just brought in a bunch of random band members who would jam from the old days. I met & hung out with Lemy @ the Cat House, and seen a lot of the 80's & early 90's bands there. GnR decided they were going to do a show one night, and dropped tickets that same day, so that "only" the locals could go to the show, I think it was at the Paladium, man that was an Awesome Show! So glad "your good friend Rob" told me this was getting uploaded last night lol (he's my ex boyfriend/friend/neighbor) So looks like I'll be meeting you soon Jordan, hope you bring by Jah too, gotta meet his little butt too! Lol

My friends and I used to live in West LA and go to West Hollywood on weekend nights. We'd first go to the Rainbow Bar & Grill for a few drinks and then stumble down hill to watch the show at the Troubadour. Then back to the Rainbow or home with a new girl friend! Rock N Roll Denny's wasn't too far away and always a great place to hang out, especially in the parking lot. Like Vicky says flyers were posted everywhere and were all over the ground every weekend in front of the Rainbow. People were ODing on the streets and you'd hear about it occasionally. Dancing on the upper level was a lot of fun!! Those were the days!! Thanks for the reminder.

What an incredible vlog!!! Thanks so much. You know me and your music vlogs! SO great for Vicky to do this and share her unique knowledge and history of that era which is basically my teenage and and early 20's. I will be ordering that book and making sure I let her know I'm getting it because of this vlog!!

Awesome! Vicky is such a multi-talented lady. Loved the Slash/Poison story. I’m glad you saw the Geffen Records building before demolition. I will order “Appetite for Dysfunction.”
