Victor Davis Hanson is concerned that our ‘elites’ have been compromised with politicians, business leaders and academics appeasing rather than challenging China. He notes the historical analogy with Japan threatening the Asia-Pacific region in the run up to WWII.

China's a threat but I'm more worried about the enemy within.

Yes, but isn’t that enemy within encouraged, perhaps even supported and directed by the enemy without? Look at Fentanyl. Comes from China in industrial quantities as I understand it. BLM are avowedly Marxist. As VDH notes, many key cultural institutions are compromised by China.

My generation was asleep at the wheel. Many of us preferred to watch cit comes and happy shows and left the running of the country to the powers that be. At least I speak for myself and pretty much all of those in my lifelong circles. And I speak from regret.

These are great men who take responsibility for their lives, their families and their communities. We need to raise future generations of men to be this way if we hope to hold onto the successes our forefathers have worked so hard to give us. Emasculated, self-hating soy boys are not going to save the West.

Great commentary, the returned Australian POW's like my great uncle who spent time in Changi and the Burma railway had one major lesson for us "Don't get caught with your'e pants down!" In other words don't deplete your defense force to the point you are vulnerable and unprepared. Time to bring back national service and prepare for what is coming.

@pokinacha

@@2drsdan eh? The point of the US right to bear arms is to fight a civil war against a tyrannical govt not against an invading military. We’re not sitting ducks. We lack military might but then we’re only 22mil people. If China were to attempt to invade, they would win, however the Australian Defence Force would hurt them enough that they wouldn’t be able to fend off a response from both the UK and the US

Great discussion gentlemen. Very pertinent toward what we now have ahead off us, if the trajectory we as Australia are on, and fail to play the game right. Scary times if Australia plays bluff and loses wit with China. Very scary. Time to give law abiding citizens the rights to bear arms. No country has ever won a guerilla war theatre to my knowledge.

Nothing VDH says is going to depress this listener. His informed, balanced, conservative realism always offers assurance that the forces of cultural Marxist coercive utopianism can be stopped from destroying Western liberal democracy and opening the way to Chicom dominance.

At 1pm on that Sunday in Feb 1979, at the Sydney Domain I strolled past Col Lamerton beckoned me over to his van to view a live coverage of China invading Vietnam. An hour later when I ascended the soapbox to speak my topic of discussion revolved around what I observed. After giving an outline of what occurred. At he end of 10 mins I stated those 42 years ago that China would become a grave threat to Australia and the world. Well, look at what's happened?! But the greatest problem now are the 2.2 million Chinese diaspora here and other countries who will form 5th colums and assist the motherland.

0:50 - Why can't we get China's polity straight? Capitalism with Chinese characteristics? Na. China under Deng Xiaoping made a successful transition from Communism to Fascism. Communism is dictatorship dedicated to the eradication of private enterprise. Fascism is dictatorship that exploits private enterprise. It is not rocklet science to see where China falls on that classification. Moreover, its chauvinistic nationalism, militarism, and irredentism fits that designation to a t. Same goes for Russia. Mussolini and Hitler are grinning in their graves.

No is not. All the old political ideological establishments lack vision. As the western political parties wants the power ,the Chinese CCP have the power and wants to preserve it. Globalism was not invented now, but the advantage of it in the past was one sense only from poor to rich countries. Now this has changed and the rich have not wake up yet because they still use to live by old means. Instead to use their own wealth and manage it in their own countries they preferred to expand the markets and use it where is profitable around the world but the profit still not use to make real changes in their countries building their own knowledge and resources for the future. They are managed by politicians, bankers investors which are not generating anything but inflation and problems for the future.

The only real threat is the government of the United States of America. Which other country has a thousand military bases and installations located in other countries worldwide? Russia - no. China - no. Iran - no. North Korea - no. Only the good “ole” USA. How many of the U.S. allies have their military bases in the United States. Is there a Canadian miltary base, or a Turkish military base or even a Saudi or Israeli military base on American soil? Why not? Research the amount of money that several other countries combined spend on their military compared to what U.S. taxpayers spend on theirs. NOT EVEN CLOSE. (I suspect this comment will be removed by its “benevolent and free speech supporting” host.) Oh well.

Contrary to Hanson's reading of the 2016 election, what got Trump elected was not anything about Council on Foreign Relations or the like; it was simply Hillary Clinton's poorly managed campaign, due to her complacent self-congratulation, indulged too early. Late in the campaign season, her husband went to the traditionally Democratic Midwest Rustbelt states and talked with people there. He then told her campaign staff that she could not take them for granted and must go there to show concern for their problems. She chose not to go there, but to go to Arizona, trying to turn it Blue, and the people of Wisconsin, Michigan, and rural Pennsylvania did not forgive her neglect. The election was hers to lose and lose it she did, by her own unforced errors. Hanson's intellectual interest is the history of warfare, which is his main frame of reference for international relations. He knows very little about China, except that it is now run by a Communist Party, which buys foreign business people's complicity and seduces gullible foreign politicians. That's how international relations have always been done; the fault is Americans' triumphalist complacency following fall of USSR. Hanson is said to be a famous scholar of Roman and Greek Classics and he presumably knows the Latin language well. Yet, at 2:12 in this video he mispronounces the Latin-based word "magnanimity" as "magnaminity." I wonder whether he often "Calvary" for "cavalry," as some people do. Hanson is a blundering clown; in these 12+ minutes he mispronounces words like Uighur, Taiwan, and succor, for example.
