In this Conversation, John and Victor discuss the Presidency of Donald Trump, the rise of China, and the shifts taking place in international politics as a result of globalisation.

I live about 400 miles south of VDH in a suburb of Los Angeles. I would like to think that we are tired of the left and disgusted by the violence and looting. I would love to see a red tsunami in the upcoming elections but American politics are unpredictable, never would I have imagined Trump being elected in 2016 but I’m grateful that he was. The world needs this man.

As someone who wasted his youth on a worthless law degree, I can tell you that the US has way too many lawyers, and way too many law schools. The job market for lawyer collapsed about 10 years ago, and law schools responded by pushing social justice activism as a recruitment tool. They're training movie lawyers, instead of real ones, and jacking up tuition to ridiculous levels. The graduates come out financially ruined, propagandized, and barely employable. I repaid my loans by leaving the field and working construction, and I wish I'd never wasted my time on it. They send me alumni donation request forms, trumpeting their new social justice initiatives.

Yes over-supply of the deeply-indebted. We've seen this in the acting profession for centuries, maybe 80% sector unemployment due to insufficient demand for such a size of service provider pool. More recently the growth of university "education" has created similar rats-in-a-sack situations resulting in both XR and WuFlu reaction - who controls the limited funding gets the science they want, when there are so many grads chasing their academic career dreams and willing to comply, wittingly or not.

Allowing everyone to bring their culture here and selfishly spread it everywhere only shows that you had no faith in the value of your own culture. When you have a home, where things are tidy and in order, and peaceful and brotherly, would you let any vandal enter and do as they please? Rip your garden to shreds, make your living room so dirty that you can't recognize it anymore? No? You would not? Well, your country experienced just that. How about inviting people to come here and adopt and share your values, not detract them? Don't be surprised at the results.... ignorance of the ground rules has its own way of biting back! When a person migrates to another, foreign country, I would expect them to be grateful to be let in. I would expect them to learn how we live, the language we speak, the cultural values we hold dear. That seems natural and normal to me. I would also expect them to pull their share of responsibility and work for our collective, and not let them siphon off all the welfare systems available, just because they can. Canada will not let anyone enter who can't support themselves. They are right about that.

I don't agree. Technology may have enabled us to laugh, and the image in the Silent Age was nearly always comedic. But now technology has usurped entertainment and become an end in itself. The technology advertises itself by the damage it does, such as Twitter and the career-ruining tweet. Imagine that by some quirk of physics, sound could still not be married to the moving image. Surely the mullahs in Iran would be rolling in the aisles laughing their heads off at their own modern-day Charlie Chaplin or Laurel & Hardy equivalents (with the women giving back as good as the men!). What films other than comedy could you make in such circumstances? The imagery of violence and gloom and the negativity of frivolous cynical humour that abounds on the internet has led humanity up the garden path: and we don't know how to return to .... mere entertainment. We used to know how to laugh. Our forebears would be ashamed of us now with our glut of misery guts so-called new visual entertainment and our obsession with the ridiculously tiny, tyrannical screens that are our constant companions. Don't you think that we have forgotten how to laugh at the same things because the internet has made culture a swamp? Look at the video games market. Forget having any future guitar maestros: otherwise talented kids are spending hours, days and days playing ridiculously repetitive video games. And if the Mullahs ever needed a jaunty live piano sound to lift the occasion of their Silent movie, there are currently thirty million people learning to play the piano in China. Will the United States run out of church organists in twenty years' time? It may have to look abroad! If we don't even retain an appetite for comedy, we will lose our civilisation very fast.

Hi Mr. Hanson - Thank you for having this insightful discussion with John Anderson. I learned a lot and crystalized my opinions from hearing you speak. One thing I'd like to address about your comments that is not so complimentary is your opinion of Trump as a person. Maybe when you talk about his personality traits, you are describing what the "Left" focuses on, but I think you also feel the same way. I'm not wanting to persuade you to think otherwise, I just want you to know that a lot of people, including me, find him refreshing! Trump is not an eloquent speaker by any means, but that's what is so appealing about him to so many people after decades and decades of slick-speaking politicians. I don't care about his sentence structure, the range of his vocabulary, or the depth of his intellect. What I do care about is when he speaks, I feel it. I know what he means. I see it in his face, I hear it in his voice, I understand his heart, and I believe him! He is transparent and sincere. Even when he's exaggerating or boasting, he knows he's doing it and he doesn't try to hide it or make you believe it! The press don't get that! Instead, they fact check him! Idiots. He's warm, authentic and optimistic. He loves people and he loves the United States of America! I agree that Trump can be crude at times, but generally not in front of an audience. I've never heard a filthy tirade come out of his mouth like I have with other politicians. The other point I'd like to make is that millions of people LOVE Donald Trump. (I cringe when you say that people just tolerate him and will dump him when his usefulness is gone. Only certain people will do that. Elites, politicians, users. But they are of no value to him other than what they can do for him to further his cause, so it's mutual. It's a very organic approach for someone from New York who grew up in the Bronx, don't you think? It's not how I live my life nor a philosophy I would recommend, but it's who he is. I respect him for that.) To the common man (and a few others), he is a hero, and American hero, and true Americans don't forget their heroes. He is a patriot. He will always belong with other patriots. He is a man of the people. Real people (the likes of me vs the likes of politicians, Hollywood, intellectuals, etc.) will always honor him for what he's done. He is the man who said out loud what we don't have a voice to say-no more of this insanity! He is the man who has sacrificed what we don't have and never will possess - his ease, his comfort, his wealth, his standing - to take up our cause and fight for us, to fight for our rights, our freedoms, our families, our traditions, our laws, our American way of life, our Judeo-Christian society and our God. You'll probably never see this comment, but that's ok. I feel better for having written it, and every time I hear you say something derogatory about Donald Trump, I will feel better for having stood up for him, even if I'm the only one that knows.

Latin use to be taught in middle school and high school. Now they teach remedial English even in college. Teachers unions don’t like competition (like Charter schools, private schools and homeschooling). They have spent their union dues on keeping our public schools 23rd (or worse) in the world.

Teachers in the USA are spoiled babies and public sector unions are absolutely to blame. IMO private sector unions are essential and public sector unions are destructive.

Enjoyed this. Keep these conversations coming. Not sure that I believe the divide is as great as it is mentioned. The extremes make a ton of money off of stirring cup the division between our country. Totally agree with VDH as to why Mexican Americans in his area do not align with BLM. Makes all the sense in the world. Yet, I do believe many do not like what that movement has become. Watching any group become drunk with power loses the Moral High Ground. Same goes for any group. I love my American and international statues that honor heroic (no traitors). All the best. I love Australia. I've enjoyed my time there.

15 years ago i was denied entry into Grad School and was told "The University and the Biology Department receive grants and bonus' based on number of Chinese students admitted." This was in small town, southern New Mexico. I can only imagine how it is in larger cities and Universities.

The only reason possible, aside from grades,is the National Laboratories at Santa Fé. The Chinese are sending select students overseas (N.Mex.)for industrial espionage purposes to infiltrate US Institutions. These students belong to the Secret Services of the CCP.

as a black american, the only thing bugging my life is 6 months to being paying student loans after im done probably in spring or summer... 6 months is ridiculous, and COVID proves that. If they could give me more time to find a better job (which is totally doable) maybe like a year and six months, I'd consider that reparations. That's literally all I "need' from the government. And maybe some more books from T. Sowell, but he's gonna fill up my personal library anyhow.

Consider that your student loan can never be erased. The laws making this possible had bipartisan support. Your degree was sold to you as valuable, unless you are a coder or top engineer, it is not. You have been lied to.

I remember back in 1989/1990 speaking to my dad about the collapse of the Warsaw Pact, he said back then, 'There is still China'. I was just child then, but I remembered that conversation. I then noticed through the 1990s ans 2000s that no one seemed to care at all.

@@jenpsakiscousin4589 That's interesting! I know a physicist from China who says the same thing. She, like so many Chinese, was apolitical, but when Obama came to office she started to take notice. She had the perspective to see that the policies he was promoting and his tactics mirrored China. NOT good!

DAVID BADGLEY - Do you believe this complete reliance on China to produce our goods with their cheap (aka slave) labor pool, and US corporate interests to keep this profitable system (for executives) going as long as possible is what is behind the media's 24x7 anti-Trump campaign? China may very well have a stranglehold on much of US business to.the point of no return. There's no doubt Trump is seriously trying to decouple from China, and it's scaring the powers that be.

I have the highest level of respect for Victor Davis Hansen. I have traveled throughout China and am quite familiar with the far east as a whole. I have also lived in the EU. I believe it is essential to take things into context and discard exaggeration when interviewing anyone. There are few white men who have more black friends and professional associates than I, and we all detest uneducated, disorganized clubs such as BLM and Antifa for instance. Essentially a disorganized street gang, BLM lacks the courage to confront actual organized racist organizations (of whom many are also colleagues of mine). It is because such 'woke' individuals are inferior and should be treated accordingly.

Dr. Hanson, I am a 74-year-old woman, graduate of Antioch College in the '60's, mother of two now in their 50's, wrote software for 40 years mostly for the federal government and non-profits.... now retired. I love President Trump; I'm a registered Green and didn't vote for him last time, but will be included in what I see coming as a "tidal wave" in 2020. I will not stop loving him; I believe most of the millions who show up for his rallies will also continue to love and support the President. That's because what we see is real, not put on to get our vote. You are so "finicky", so persnickety about a person's affect. There are a lot of people who don't "love" you, also, because, like yourself, they are prejudiced against anyone unlike their own class. I am sorry and suggest you work, really work at expanding your comfort with your fellow human beings. You can learn to love people at an entirely different level and not feel as alone as you currently do. I have been living in California since 1995. I live in a double-wide in San Bernardino. For greater happiness and growth, get over your personal isolation and insistence on your superiority. When you die, you will find that you can't take your wealth and your privilege with you and that it is NOT what will bring you love and admiration on the other side.

Hello, your comment caught my eye while I was scrolling; I have just discovered John's "channel." I am listening to the video now and I don't get the idea that the guest feels alone and/or superior. I know this is a year old comment; but I don't sense any persnickety-ness out of him; I think he will vote Trump in '24...am I missing something?
