Ah, I remember the first time I heard Victor Wooten: 1992 or 1993, A Jazz Festival aired on PBS and he was playing with the Fleck Tones. I was just a beginner on the bass with dreams of touring and such. I quickly inserted a VHS tape and recorded the rest of the festival and watched that over and over.

Victor did a clinic at a local music store. It was great. He's such an incredible person. He played for us for quite a while. Completely improvised with a looper pedal to add parts on top. He was totally in the moment. But that's how he lives. And he talks about music and life. To him, being a great human being is more important than being a great musician.

That always strikes me about Victor when I watch him. I always assume great bass players have long, lithe fingers - my excuse for my terrible playing is I have inherited fingers like cows' teats from my Dad. But Victor's hands look compact and powerful...but he manages to play his amazing chops with such a minimum of movement, effort and grace. Brilliant interview.
