Victoria had better things to do as a kid than riding her bike, like customising her inhalers, perfecting her Ploughman’s and writing fiendishly difficult connection puzzles.

As Victoria found out: Riding a bicycle is not so much a matter of skill as it is a matter of trust. You don't need to balance the thing; it does that by itself. Just point and ride.

You can do it! A bike is most stable when the wheels are moving, the faster they spin the more force it takes to tip over. Learn which brake goes to the front wheel and which goes to the back - hitting the front brakes too hard when going very fast can flip you forwards. Don't be afraid to put your feet down to catch yourself, and even bail out if you must.
@John-K638

You probably know someone with a bike who will let you have a try. I would advise using a small bike, or have the seat lowered until you can sit on it with your feet on the ground. To begin with all you need to do is scoot along with your feet, without pedalling. That way you get the sense of balance and realise that so long as the bike is moving it's very stable. Then you can start to use the pedals. Your first time properly riding a bike is a great feeling, so I would go for it.

to the others adults here commenting they also cannot ride a bike and are now inspired - but dont want to risk embarrasment by having someone assist dont use the peddles right away. just keep your feet out to the side and "kick" along for momentum. learn to balance/steer first. meaning - get used to adjusting you're center of gravity while in motion. once you're comfortable on the seat, THEN try to use the peddles - and TBH, dont go slow there.... push hard to get the speed up (to a speed you're comfy with) and allow the momentum combined with the balance you just learned, to carry you on. i also suggest practicing "standing on the pedals" by using a stationary bike. FTR - none if this is really *needed* , it may make learning less stressful. best wishes!

None of them use the brakes. You gotta keep the wheel in motion to stay upright. A light touch on the brakes while pedaling is gonna help keep the wheel in motion and keep your speed low.

There was really no other way to do this for the ‘average’ rider, right? The task specifically says you have to be cycling forwards within the course at all times, so you can’t stop because then you’re not moving AND your feet would have to touch the ground, you can’t cycle in circles because then you’d be going backwards at points, and the average person can’t stand and hop along on the BMX so… really, how is this achievable in any other way? I much prefer tasks where there’s a bit of flexibility to think around the tasks somehow, otherwise it’s just the same thing 5 times and it’s boring. This task was really only made interesting by virtue of the fact that VCM was learning to ride for the first time.

Why did they ride the bikes!? They could have scraped along the ground sideways using momentum, it would be very very slow, and very stable! Of if time was halved for every time they touched the ground, why not just get off the bike, scoot along the ground, complete all the tasks and then just ride across really slowly in a straight line?
@TBelen91
@TBelen91 2 жыл бұрын
I think that requires quite a lot of outside the box thinking to consider scraping along the ground sideways instead of just riding the bike normally, but slowly.
