I’m the libero on my team and team captain. I joined the team being told I was good at hyping up the team, but it was hilarious to me because I vividly remember crying before the first practice because I was so intimidated by everyone on my team. For everyone out there, and also something I wish I had known, YOUR TEAM ARE YOUR FAMILY. THEY LEARN AS YOU LEARN. THEY FALL WHEN YOU FALL. THEY FIGHT WHEN YOU FIGHT. Remember that you need your team and your team needs you!

hi Victoria, good video, I'm personal trainer and I get some of the college athletes at our gym to train and a lot of times just to kick around ideas (such as fat loss which everyone seems to be interested in). Let me quickly add that I'm not an athletic trainer, I mainly work with girls for fitness competitions to look more aesthetic not to be a better athlete. I usually get the girls during their off season just to help them look better which is much different than the type of training needed to be a better athlete. But I'm going to forward this video to a couple of them as I think they would find it interesting and helpful. Have a good day and good workout! All the best...

What tips or recommendations would you give for me I’ve never played volleyball except for this year and I’m a freshman I’m in high school and I wanna play volleyball I’m 5.2 so I’m thinking of being a libero
@lemoncalcium61604 жыл бұрын
Gabe Berrones oh gosh, libero help. I can do that, even though volleyball season is over but... figure out how to put a split step in there’s some good videos if you search. Practice reading a ball and how to receive from a failed block. Don’t be afraid to move around and/ or ask something of your team. Talk to your team see how they’re feeling and play with that, if they’re feeling off from the usual be prepared to help them a little extra. But that may be a tad complex, practicing dives and pancakes would help too. And like practice your serve, know that you aren’t just the short kid on the team but you are someone to be valued and feared. You could try to be friends with a good spiker and do some practice and extra stuff, I’ve played with my big brother, we do this thing where I jump past the attack line set it to him and he spikes. But this is a lot, and I’m only in grade seven I know I’m late on this but y’know any help is some help. Let me know how you did.

A few of these rules can apply to even non-athletes in college. For hs athletes who don’t continue in college, whether it be due to injury(me) or a decision not to, you still have so many resources available to you for mental health. Everyone’s mental health is extremely important and many college freshman become overwhelmed and struggle with depression, anxiety, or eating disorders. These things are normal and you should seek help. Additionally, Victoria’s point about making connections is important athlete or no. It will get you where you want to go in life!

The last one really hit home. I’m still in high school but I would love to play volleyball in college/university, but then I get these thoughts of all these other girls have so much more experience than me, I didn’t even make the more competitive team this year why would I be capable of playing at such high levels and I tell myself you’re just gunna have to work harder, practice more etc. And yet it’s so different because I’m doing this on my own and I start to think is this what I really want? When people look at me they don’t see a volleyball player, and I really need to feel validation from someone that this is something I can do. Sorry for the rant and thank you for your help

As a former D1 volleyball athlete, i love this whole list. It’s so true. One bonus thing i would add is, “you don’t HAVE to commit Div. 1; there are good Div. 2 and 3 schools where you can still get a scholarship but will probably have a better well-rounded student-athlete experience.” Sure, there is clout in Div. 1, but sometimes the mental health-decline in Div. 1 isn’t worth it, a lot of the coaches are absolutely gnarley- i had a coach who was manipulative, abusive and antagonistic, my mental health declined substantially, but i was made to feel it was still my fault; in our conference there were 3 coaches that were known to act antagonistic towards their players. Th pressure to win at all cost sometimes comes at the price of the athlete’s mental health. My friends who played in Div. 3 all had great and positive experiences, i wonder what that was like 😅

Oh my god Victoria, it does amaze me to see that I'm not the only one the has had these inquietudes and mental problems, but I can say that I'm totally fine now, but it is crucially necessary that college athletes and in general students know, that there are professionals that can help you deal and get through any problem. No one should feel like they are on their own.

Not a volleyball player nor the same nationality as you are but hearing this from a fellow athlete made me cry. This video made me realize what I have been doing wrong from my Freshman year in High School up to now in Senior Year. I lost the reason to continue playing Tennis because I also think that I'm not good enough to play the sport that I already loved for my school and I'm not good enough to become a PRO athlete someday. Which is my dream career. I'm glad I found your channel because throughout the years of being an athlete. I thought that I'm the only one who is dealing with those kind of stuff. In fact, athletes do have a lot in common and those commonalities made me realize that I am not alone. I'm already in 11th grade here in the Philippines and most of the student-athletes can't play anymore because they're already overage. 2020 is the year I promised myself that I would overcome Regionals and reach Nationals but it got cancelled because of this pandemic we're facing right now. After I finish 12th grade and graduate in high school. I would still definitely apply as a varsity for the school that I know can make me improve, not only in playing tennis but also as a person. Thank You So Much

Can you do the rules for high school and college libero’s because I would really want to try to get that position next year in high school. And ways we can practice to help get that position plz answer
@lemoncalcium61604 жыл бұрын
Mariah Jk another one needing some libero help. Let me help you, the rules that I know are if you get the libero position you never rotate to the front row ever, you rotate in and out to the back row a ton. Some practice you could do is find someone to spike on you and practice, if you can get a few people then try playing a game. Try learning how to take a split step it’s really helpful trust me. When you get into high school try your hardest at the tryouts and learn how to have a coach able attitude. If you have the ability to learn then that’s great! Show that you have that to your coach. Just practice as much as you can. If you do make the team (which I hope you do) learn how to receive a failed block, be ready to move and figure out how your team likes to play. And I know most people won’t want to hear something like this from a seventh grader but you asked for it, but I receive for my brother who plays in high school and he plays on the court a ton.

Hey Victoria, I just wanted to thank you for doing everything you do. I’m 19 and in the last year of my diploma all the way from Singapore. I don’t play Volleyball but I play Tchoukball, which has rather similar rules (ie. ball can’t touch the floor, three passes, mostly a defensive game). I don’t play at a college level (as I am still in pre-u) and we don’t have divisions or anything but we have a competition where all the pre-us in this small country come together and play. I got into the team as one of the 12 players and even if I am still mostly bench (even though my coach says he doesn’t care), I still suffer from a bit of imposter syndrome because I may have the skills but my stamina suCks... and it’s also my last year so yakno... for the longest time, I’ve been wondering why I keep on attending trainings and going for games when I could have just not gone or quit. Mentally, I was pretty much a disaster. After I saw how enthusiastic you are about Volleyball, I realised I had the same enthusiasm for my sport. I realised that I wanted to play competitively for my enjoyment. I realised I wanted to challenge myself. My position requires me to be the best defender in my team and watching your past games with USC, you and your teammates diving for the ball, all the saves that you all do, it has somewhat motivated to become a better defender. Every time, I am nervous before a Friendly match, I will search one of your USC games up and watch it. It calms me down for some reason (I sound like a stalker now 🥺). This video also helped me feel better mentally. I was always worried that I had to please people in my team to ‘deserve’ the spot. I realised that I can literally put all my brain power from that into focusing on the game, rather than worrying if my teammate doesn’t like me because she didn’t high five with me... I’m still trying to me a better player, both mentally and physically! I am not sure if I still want to continue this sport in Uni, but it would be nice if I did haha...

Hey Victoria, I know your probably not going to read this but what the heck... Ok so I play for a middle school volleyball team and for the last year everyone on the team has been getting along but now all of my fellow varsity players talk about me behind my back saying that I’m terrible, they hate me, and they wished I switched schools so they don’t have to talk to me during practice. (Bullying me over all) Now I don’t know what to do and it’s driven me to cry at practice. Has anything like this ever happened to you, and if so do you know what could help so they’ll stop? Thank you, Your Biggest Fan

Hi Morgan! Hmmm that definitely sounds like a tough situation to deal with, but if it is truly as bad as you describe, I think you need to have a conversation with the team/those girls. The thing I would do is confront the issue and ask why they feel this way and if/what you could do to help fix this situation. I have been in a situation where a team wasn't happy with a life choice I made, and it was difficult for me because I felt like I was being "excluded" for something they didn't understand. The way I handled it, because I realized a conversation wasn't going to change their minds, was to just kill them with kindness. I showed up every day supportive, hard working, and didn't buy into their drama. Eventually, theres a new thing they want to gossip about or a new issue at hand, and the targeting blows over. They will realize the true person you are!

I just had my first practice, and I was scared that the girls would think Im bad or something, but when I came there, they were all so nice and welcoming, now that I replay the practice, I wanna slap myself because I thought 'they're gonna be so rude' like- no they arent. Your team is your family. Thats what I learned just now even tho I had my first practice an hour ago. And Im happy I learned it This helped me realise so thank you Victoria!

I have a question, how do you make money after college? because the other people are focusing on their studies to get a job but if you are a college athlete you aren't focusing on studies as much so how do you live after college?

The 10th tip made me feel so much better! At my school they had 10 players already and 2 spots left and I got the spot, but I felt like they were so much better than me and that I was just an extra. You made me feel so much better that I was 30 minutes ago
