Yo Victoria! The characters tend to cry a lot because in Japan’s high school leagues, there isn’t a “regular season” it’s just tournament after tournament. The third years cry after loses and get really upset because once they lose, that’s it. They are done. And for a lot of them, they aren’t continuing volleyball after high school. So all of that emotion comes out after their final game
@iitsBuntog3 жыл бұрын
That actually kinda sucks. Imagine facing off against a top school for your first game. You'll pretty much have only 2 official matches a year if you lose both matches.

boost- But yeah, the Volleyball, or sports in general, system is different in Japan
@cafegoose3 жыл бұрын
Also middle school/high school sports are HUGE in Japan. In the US, only a small fraction of students play in varsity sports. But in Japan, about 50% of all middle & high schoolers play at a sports club at school. They take it super seriously, practicing 6-7 days/week and all year round. So when many third years lose in this tournament, they are basically ending their 6-year-long sports career. That's devastating :-(

The thing is that this is not a "Good vs Evil" kind of show, that's why there's no villain portraing as a final boss, there's just players and teams that have different levels of expertise in the game and showing their own story of how they got to that specific point is how the plot evolves. By doing that the autor tried to show how different people with different personalities and builds approach the game and how they get to success or even fail in some cases. With that said, YES, there's going to be different "side stories" about different teams and/or specific players telling what is their approach to the game and what kind of hardships they had to face. But apart from a couple of characters, most of this side stories are like an episode long, so you dont HAVE to remember every character, just understand their stories. But I assure you, bc of how relatable those are, you'll be wanting to remember a couple of them.

The quote is basically saying, “there’s not chance of winning if you don’t put the effort.” They use the quote in the context of playing a team that’s is out of their league, and the team basically gives up before they start, but saying “you can’t win unless you try” means a game is never decided beforehand no matter how good the opponent, so don’t act like you’ve lost already and give it your all. Bad translations: Nishinoya didn't call his opponents "pieces of shit", he just said somezhing like "dammit" (kind of a bad one, since the subtitles made him seem super rude) When the girl cried after the game, the subtitles said "they went after my serves" (which doesn't rly make any sense), she said something like "they targeted me with their serves" (Makes more sense why she was crying, it was because she messed up a lot of recieves) This one is also from a previous episode They said that in one game asahi's spikes were "ruthlessly blocked" but other translations usually say something like "every single one of his spikes was blocked" (I guess this is a minor error, but to me the second one sounds waaay worse)

This episode was the first one that really made me realise that I’d found something special watching Haikyuu. How many shows ever think about how it feels to be the loser at one of these competitions? And so realistically. I don’t play volleyball, but I’m a competitive Irish Dancer, and we have teams as well. And everything they dealt with here I’ve never related to anything more, the giving up before you start, the half-jokingly saying you’ll be at the top someday, the desire to work really hard when you’re at a competition, but losing that drive when the going gets tough at boring old practice, and the regret when the next competition comes, and you didn’t change. That line “we played too” always makes me tear up a bit coz it felt like for the first time the hard work and years of practice I put into dancing was being recognised. Not because I won, but just because I tried. I was never good enough to win, or even place high up. But I was there too. I worked hard too. And someone finally recognised that even though I didn’t have the wins to show for it, I loved my chosen sport just as much as those who won. For every winner, someone has to lose out, and it’s nice that the losers are never completely forgotten about in this show. They are acknowledged for what they gave, even if it wasn’t enough.

in haikyuu, you learn part of the backstory of at least on player on almost every opposing team. by building up the rival team it gets you more emotionally involved in the show. like, you want to root for karasuno because they are the main team, but then you get other back stories that make you sympathize with the other teams. this is why so many haikyuu fans don’t have karasuno as their favorite team. the writing of it makes it so there will be points where not everyone is entirely rooting for karasuno, and in my eyes, that’s part of what makes the show so brilliant.
@charmcobrado3 жыл бұрын
part of the reason why Haikyuu is one of the best and most popular sports anime is because of how close to reality the show is. there are no superpowers here... no overly dramatic storyline. just highschool boys and their journey on achieving a dream to play the longest on the court. you can relate to the characters of the main team, both players and support staff. you can relate to every team they play against. there is no one true villain to hate. that bitter-sweet feeling every time our boys from karasuno wins, but your heart breaks because the other team has to face defeat. haikyuu is more than just an amazing show... it is a masterpiece
@tealGalaxy3 жыл бұрын
Hey Victoria! The better translation, which you can find on Crunchyroll (I think the Netflix subs drop the ball because they can't just copy Crunchyroll's better translation for copyright reasons), is "You can't win unless you believe you can" instead of "You can't win unless you try". These kinds of errors range from making lines a little bit more awkward (like this one) to outright changing what characters are saying. EDIT: A great example of changing what was said completely: When one of the girls is crying after their loss she says "They went after my serves" which is completely wrong. What she says here is that they TARGETED her with their serves. She wasn't messing up her serve and giving over points, the opponent was targeting her on serves because her receives were bad.
@NadiaMattson3 жыл бұрын
Yes I completely agree what I really think is that Netflix is taking more direct translations and dropping the ball on the meaning and such I honestly would let her use my account haha but I don’t expect her to buy a new subscription or something like that I just love that she’s even trying to make sense of the sub it’s not super easy at first we appreciate and love her so much

@@Crystantemum yeah a lot of their personalities kinda of change actually the swearing as a whole throws me like yeah they swear but the amount of it and the actual words said change a little drastically. And the whole upperclassmen things just makes me want to die like I get it I do but it’s like no like (excuse me for using this as an example to explain but seriously) what would you translate shawty to it’s slang which is different but senpai has a meaning of respect and is much more ingrained in the culture so while it is a term that translates to upperclassmen it has a bit more meaning than that and sounds really weird when translated I English the way they do because in American you’d never hear someone going around calling someone upperclassmen John it’s like an honorific rather than just a noun

Yeah, a lot of the best episodes in my opinion show how human each character or team truly is, and while it is good to understand these things, I personally think not understanding isn’t a big issue. The comment section can always explain things and if you don’t understand things you can always rewatch these things later on. Haikyuu was one of my first animes and I didn’t fully understand a lot of things, but as you go on in the series it will get easier.
@eloisecarcini12803 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with what you said. I love that Haikyuu shows the perspective of characters from other teams and their backstory. This is definitely one of my favorite parts of HQ. I love how they put just enough backstory in for the opposing team/players to almost make you root for them. I think that is what makes the show feels so real. Every team puts in practice time with the intent of winning or trying to win, so to only see the effort Karasuno puts in would, I think, make the show fall flat.

I see there are many comments below that are explaining the quotes, but to give it more context, that quote was meant to portray Daichi captain's mentality "how you shouldn't act like you've lost before the game". That's what he said to Ikejiri (the wing spiker in Karasuno opposing team) and Michimiya (female team captain). This is the first Haikyu episode that makes me cry of the whole series. idk if anyone’s posted anything like this yet, but here are the full names + numbers of the Karasuno roster, as well as which name they’re referred to the most, if that helps! I’ll be listing these with their last names first, as it’s done in Japan. 1: Sawamura Daichi (so his first name is Daichi). The others most often call him Daichi or Daichi-san, but iirc Kageyama formally refers to him as “Sawamura-san”, and Ukai and Takeda call him Sawamura/Sawamura-kun. (Ukai and Takeda also refer to the rest of the team by their last names). 2: Sugawara Koushi. Often referred to as Suga/Suga-san. 3: Azumane Asahi. Most often called Asahi/Asahi-san, which is his first name. He and Daichi are the ones referred to by their first names the most, iirc. 4: Nishinoya Yuu. Sometimes nicknamed Noya. He and Tanaka like being called “senpai” (upperclassman) by the first years, though I think it’s mostly only Hinata who calls them senpai lol. 5: Tanaka Ryuunosuke. Usually called Tanaka, but Noya calls him “Ryuu”. 6: Ennoshita Chikara. Usually called Ennoshita; Noya calls him “Chikara”. (Noya refers to all the second years by their first names). 7: Kinoshita Hisashi. Referred to as Kinoshita, but Noya calls him Hisashi. 8: Narita Kazuhito. Referred to as Narita, but again, Noya calls him Kazuhito. 9: Kageyama Tobio. Everyone calls him Kageyama, but there will be one character in later episodes who often calls him by his first name Tobio. 10: Hinata Shouyou. Most people call him Hinata, Noya tends to call him Shouyou. 11: Tsukishima Kei. Most people call him Tsukishima, Yamaguchi is the only one (so far) to call him Tsukki. 12: Yamaguchi Tadashi. Everyone calls him Yamaguchi, but you’ll notice that Shimada, the guy teaching him jump float serves, calls him Tadashi. Also: Shimizu Kiyoko, the manager. Most of the team refers to her as Shimizu/Shimizu-san, but Nishinoya and Tanaka call her by her first name, Kiyoko (usually they say Kiyoko-san). As a general rule of thumb: Ukai and Takeda call everyone on the team by their last names. The team call Asahi and Daichi by their first names, except for Kageyama who is very Polite and calls them Azumane-san and Sawamura-san, lol. Hope that helps a bit!

5:25 no lol, that's Daichi, it's actually surprising you dont recognize Daichi in that flashback, specially since they explained they were friends in the previous episode but I can see it how you can miss it as a new anime watcher, 19:50 also yeah, Haikyuu is a show that doesn't just focus the story on the main characters but on the rivals too, to the point that you even cheer for the other teams and not just Karasuno, it's what makes it a great show. It will become easier to keep up, as you go. Karasuno is going to be the main focus still for sure, since this show is about their story, but the other teams, even minor character won't just be ''nobodies''

The main team of this whole show is Karasuno but there are a lot of teams who are going to play a big role to their growth which they will be introduced later on, especially on season 2. I just want to say that you're going to love most teams in the future once you learn about them!! What I really love about this show is that not only it focuses on Karasuno, they will also show the other teams' backstories and such so I (idk about the other haikyuu homies) really love the teams equally.

Hey Victoria! So Haikyuu basically does go over every team and they do it in such a way to make you remember then for something and make every character in the show important or have value. This is the way I see it but idk how others do. You still stay with Karasuno but there are episodes where they focus on the opponents/other characters and make you feel connected to all of them.
@Pantalaimon913 жыл бұрын
One of the things a lot of Americans don't realize about Japanese high school sports is that they don't play any form of season. You have National qualifiers, Nationals if you get there, and friendly games, and if you're from an especially rural area you don't even get those. You get two chances to qualify in high school volleyball, the summer and the winter tournaments. Your entire season can be two games losing in the first round of both. This has always been one of my favorite episodes of the series because we never think about the teams that lose and have to go home in a show. The focus is always purely on our main cast and their quest to the top. The show in general does such a good job of building a whole list of teams that you hate that you love and that you love to hate, all while you cheer on Karasuno. BTW Victoria, the other teams can be looked at kind of as recurring characters. If you want to remember who everyone is on every single team that's your prerogative, but you don't lose anything by just remembering the important names and even just faces. They're excellent at acting as foils in the moment for each match while giving you interesting stories and a richer experience overall, but you don't really need to know everyone's name.

They have already established that the dude in the opposing side is Daichi's old teammate last episode. They even talked before the game. Also, the teams that Karasuno are facing have their own story. We get to see that. It's not all volleyball here, we get to experience how they are like that or how they developed their techniques or even their perspectives on what's happening on and off the court. We don't just root for Karasuno here and root for failure for our opponents, we root for everyone's success and to do their best.

one of reasons why haikyuu is one of the best sports anime is that it doesn't only focuses on the character development of the protagonist or their team but also it shows the backstory of the other teams or players or the experiences that they really get whether on court or not. every character or teams has their own storyline which makes the show great Fun Fact: the author of haikyuu, Furudate was a middle blocker in high school therefor there are moments that really shows the experiences of the players that sympathizes well with the audience.

I think what I love about Haikyuu is that every team Karasuno plays they're treated also like the main characters or storyline for that game. So even though like Date Tech, Aoba Josai, Nekoma are like among the more prominent teams that they go against each team they play is a significant part of their growth and although you're rooting for Karasuno to win you get to see how much the other team wants to win also and you really feel for them. No team is like treated as a "villain" team.
@AngeloWAV3 жыл бұрын
Karasuno is the main team yes, but a lot of the opposing players/teams are expanded on in a “character of the day” format, where we learn a little or a lot about a character/team depending on how important they are in Karasuno’s journey. PS - Date Tech is pronounced “Dah-teh” Hope this helps! 😇

by the looks of the subtitles, you're probably watching it on Netflix. I've always thought the translations are a little weird on there. I highly recommend watching it on Crunchyroll, they have all the seasons, and the OVA's (which are like movies, some are recaps some have new content later down the line in seasons.) plus the translations are a better in my opinion. ps. things like tiny giant= little giant and uperclassmen= sempai. and there are some other ones that i just cant remember rn

Yeah cuz every time the subs said "you can't win if you don't try" the Japanese Dub says "tatakai" (戦い) which means "fight" in English, so from my understanding, the audio is saying "To win you have to fight" but the subs just say "You can't win if you don't try"

The haikyuu concept is you support all teams and know all the players. There are no evil players or teams with evil intentions. The male player we were following for this episode was Daichi's teammate in middle school. All the flashbacks were his memories of Daichi back in middle school and his impression of him as a player. I don't know the system for Japanese high school volleyball, but for Haikyuu, high school volleyball is made up of only 2 preliminary single elimination tournaments that lead up to their respective national tournament. There is no season for them, so each loss weighs more as it means you're basically out until the next tournament. Since the 2nd of the 2 annual tournaments happens in the latter half of the school year, most seniors will choose to retire from the team in order to focus on their studies. This is why everyone seems really sad. For the seniors, a loss here most likely means that their volleyball career has ended, and the younger members are sad for them since they feel that their seniors could've kept playing if they had played better/tried harder.

Not all of them will play a pivotal role but they are referenced here and there as certain characters' motivation or small reasons like that. Karasuno will always be the main team, but the show does a great job at making you care about the other teams too in fact many fans are obsessed with teams that aren't Karasuno as well. I am an actress and not at all a volleyball player but there are actually so many parallels between team sports and acting. And I feel like I really learned a lot, or at least reminded myself of a lot, through watching the show. Especially when it comes to working hard and handeling failure. I actually sit there pretty often and say quotes of the show to myself or think of the characters when I am struggeling. I really wish I would have known it earlier, I think it would have helped my mentality so much.

"you can't win unless you believe you can" is how I heard someone translate the intention behind that line! and yea, the show is always showing the backstories of the opposing teams while karasuno is playing them (even tho karasuno stays our main team) so sometimes even if karasuno wins it's kind of bittersweet. You don't have to remember the backstories of every one of these teams, though (only a few, like nekoma, but they'll have more screen time for you to remember). The backstory thing is just to add depth to the other team so we don't see it as a one dimensional 'enemy'. love your video like always!

We do get a lot of backstories for the different teams and characters. We as a Fandom like to say that "there's no such thing as a bad guy or team in haikyuu, only the love of the game" Furadate (the creator) wrote haikyuu this way because it's a story of friendship, teamwork and a love for a sport that he played. For most of us it's hard to pick a favorite team because of the backstories and development that we get. Although we always root for Karasuno to win, we can't help but feel sad for the other teams that lose. You will honestly want everyone to win as the show moves along and you get a deeper understanding of the show. Also regarding the girls teams and daichi's old classmate the majority of them are 3rd years (seniors) so after this tournament arc most of them will "retire" from the club to focus on studies for college exams and will no longer play with their teams. That's why daichi, suga and Asahi work so hard. They want to "stay on the court the longest" and make it to nationals before graduation
@adambialecki31623 жыл бұрын
Not knowing these stories will not hurt your Haikyuu experience. It is a thing in this show, that they show you perspectives of many many characters. It's fun to remember them, but whenever the show continues a storyline of one of them, they will remind you about that person in some way. Haikyuu is an anime who doesnt only talks about the main team or protagonist but also allowing us to see the backstory of other teams and characters as well. Every team has their reason to fight and everyone has their reason to win. All im saying is, Yes, theres a lot more of teams in haikyuu that will show their back story and its ok if you don't remember others but as you proceed to watch haikyuu until the end season, you will eventually get to know more of them. This is exactly the reason why a lot of the fans can't pick their permanent fave team or character because its just too many to choose from and eventually you'll change ur fave list every single time a new and hot character is introduced. So no pressure just get to know them and youll be fine ;))

There are so many characters that we can relate to and generally understand how their perspective ties in neatly with the main karasuno team. Today story line reflects Diachi’s resolve his commitment to the game. I think all these story line not only make us understand the characters a little better but also it shows is that these people who are winning they are winning for a reason. They are winning because they devoted themselves to the game. This is important for 2 reasons first it make the show and the play look more realistic because at the end of the day you won’t think Karasuno is just winning because they are the protagonists but because everyone who is playing for them loves this game and has working their hardest from an early stage to reach up to this level. Apart from that it also goes in show young athletes that if they want to be the best they need to have that drive that hunger for being the absolute best and have to give their all they can’t be the best in one night. This is an amazing example of a great writer and great story. Apart from that not only this anime but other successful anime gives an important message that if someone is devoted to something he can excel in that through will power and hardwork even if he wasn’t born as talented as others.
