Caution, if you draw fuel from one fuel tank and return to the other tank, the crossover line must free flow more fuel than the return line pushes into the secondary tank. If not, on full tanks the return fuel will overflow the secondary tank. Also, both tanks must be vented (or plumbed together across the top to each other) otherwise the secondary tank will vacuum lock and stop fuel from transferring between the two tanks. Last thought, add cut-off valves on both sides of the crossover line. Rip that crossover line off out on a trail and you can close the valves to keep from loosing ALL your fuel! I am enjoying a very interesting build. Thanks,

17:06 I personally would weld in a "1 dia or bigger tube from frame rail to frame rail and run the fuel hose inside of it. One rock, stick kicked up or if you break a drive shaft would rip that line off so easy, unless its encaged in a tube or even C channel. It would also strengthen that section of the frame as well.

As a semi-retired (45 years) truck driver I have seen the crossover fuel lines get ripped off from animal strikes or objects in the road. Do yourself a favor and install shutoff valves on the bottom of the tanks. It could save you from being stranded with no fuel. Also, if your fuel levels get low you could park the truck at an angle and wait for the fuel to run into the tank with the pickup, then shut off the valves to keep it from running back into the other tank. Paul, your fabrication work is amazing! Can't wait to see this final product.

When TIG welding, don't pull away immediately after you finish a weld. Keep the torch cup over the weld for a few seconds to keep the weld bathed in shielding gas. That will keep your welds from oxidizing and looking burnt.

Paccar number 2252-1D is a fuel return diverted valve that splits your fuel return evenly to both tanks. To run that you will also have to use a pickup tube and draw from the top iv both tanks with a T out of both. They will return equally then thru that valve. The only reason I’m recommending this setup is that it keeps you from having the crossover line under the driveshaft and close to the road. Our log trucks ran that system you have and the berm in the road wiped out many of them over the years. If you are gonna run a lie hose that is gravity like you have now then I would put a brace in that ties both fuel tanks together to support them from sagging with the weight and put your fuel hose inside a tube on the back side of the brace. Also a soft hose and steel fittings so when it does get hooked it tears the hose and doesn’t rip everything out of the tank so it’s easier to stop the fuel loss quickly. I’m not being critical I’m just saying what I’ve been thru and trying to help you from going thru the same thing. I love the build and love the channel. You guys are great! Makes me want to get back to my Chevy Cummins build. Not near as cool as yours but it has history. My dad bought the truck in 78. It’s a 76 he bought from the original owner. Now it’s got a p pump 12 valve and a 4L80 from a 95 454 suburban running it. And you guys have inspired me and my 15 year old son to put a 99 vortec 350 in his 69 chev pickup that he bought. He is now the 4th generation to own that truck. Started as my grandpas truck. Keep up the great work guys

Lots of good advise on the fuel tank plumbing. Now for some actual part numbers. Anderson Brass makes excellent compact right angle valves for the bottom of the tank, part number 190BV (various sizes). Or for two separate tanks (no crossover line) use a 6 port valve to simultaneously switch supply and return from each tank. Anderson brass part number SK1036 or they have a few variations. Real nice valves, large enough fittings and well made. This valve keeps you from overflowing a tank. Robo-Fit is a good vendor to purchase Anderson Brass valves through.

Hey Shaun, here's a tip for cutting angle iron in a band saw. Set the angle iron up so it's sitting on the two edges, kinda like a pyramid. When cut like this, the blade has more to cut through and won't make such a horrible noise. It's better for the blade too. This does only work (easily) for 90 degree cuts though

That intercooler tube trying to increase the bend and the result you got...Welp, that's why us real fabricators refer to that type of bender as a "tube kinker". Hasn't changed since I retired 8 years ago either. That aluminum was bent at the factory with a mandrel bender, which has a piece that goes inside the tube to keep it round as it is pulled around the die. So 86 gallons, huh? That will get expensivewhen you do a Matt. I know about that because my 66 F100 has 66 gallons of fuel capacity.

Use stainless or aluminum tubing for fuel crossovers, they are the Achilles heel of any siamese fuel system. Run sending units on both tanks through a check valve into a y pipe and then an inline expansion chamber with return vent (prevents air pockets when rolling or yawing the frame). Add independent manual shutoff ball valves to both tanks for critical failure isolation. Add a float switch on each tank tied inline with the sending unit for that tank to shut it down when fuel isn't available for pickup.

Thats barnes battery box is for odyssey batteries. Dual pc1500s i think. I used to use optimas until around 2012 or so when i kept having them fail like terminals break off literally break off just driving around ive seen that probably 10 times over the years where the terminals fall off among other problems or just dying. When i read about it a while ago i believe optima was sold in 2009 or 2011 or something to a different company and its gone down hill. So i looked for a new company and have been using odyssey ever since with great results odyssey batteries kick ass. Ive only had one failure with an odyssey battery that was like 8 years old it swelled up and started smoking but it never stopped working or left me stranded i removed it immediately and surprisingly after its little meltdown it still worked when i tested it in the yard. But otherwise I've probably had 15 or so odyssey batterys at least and I've never actually had one die I've replaced them due to age or changed them when going to different size batteries but between the ones I've given away and the ones I use for bench testing no matter the abuse or neglect I haven't had one die yet. They remind me of the ruggedness and reliability of the old school optimas plus I like the variety of sizes and different terminals. My friend still has an old optima from 2009 he uses for bench testing which is kinda nuts it will actually still start a car.

@FabRats Take you a piece of Heavy Duty Angle Iron and run across from one frame rail to the other to hold the Cross-Over Fuel Line. That is the way they do it on the Big Rigs.

As an ex truck driver id suggest you go over top of the drive line with your siphon tank line trust me it will hang on everything it possibly can if you don’t. This is going to be a great truck imho

If you go over the top you'll strand a portion of your fuel in one tank.

@@MegaTank10Do you often take your big rigs on 45 degree inclines causing fuel to slosh and air to get in the crossover line?

Paul, the LAST thing you want is low hanging fuel cross over lines. It'd be better to run the return lines back in the top. Your feed lines can come out of the bottom but run them back up towards the frame...also, make sure and put a cut off valve on the bottom of each tank so no fuel loss if there's a problem...take it from a Peterbilt owner. One dead coyote, blown tire in the road, ( gator), or anything else that will grab those fuel lines and you'll lose those 80 gallons...😏

A REAL Peterbilt driver would suggest drawing out the TOP of the tanks thru stand pipes, like REAL big trucks do now.

@@haroldphipps3457 MY 98 379 has return lines in the top and feed lines out the bottom, but they don't crossover hanging low, they come up the backside of the tanks to a valve... I don't know how you get any more of a REAL Peterbilt driver than that...

True. Most newer stuff draws from center or top of the tank. My dad's 1988 379 Pete did. Interesting yours draws from the bottom.

The cummins water pump is pretty strong so if your planning on higher HP then keep an eye on radiator hoses, firepunk makes billet radiator line parts to adapt the radiator over to AN fittings and lines so you can have threaded connections to stop the cummins water pump from over pressuring the hose clamps and popping a coolant line off

With the big air tank you won't be like Matt's Off Road, you won't run out of gas.

What about taking fuel from the top with a flexible pickup tube/hose that will follow the fuel when the truck is not level, like a weedeater ( or acrobatic aircraft)? Plug the holes in the bottom ,use them for drains. Maybe make the extra tank a gas can and use a fluid pump if needed to refill the main tank. Solves ground clearance problems, simplifies plumbing.

Like all the other builds, I love them. Great job on the ataac pipes. I would recommend using a fuel tank equalizing line like the Chevy top kicks use - with JIC/SAE fittings and valves so you can isolate the tanks if you catch that hose on something.

ATTA and transfer flow both offer options that'll eliminate the hose crossing over like that. Their transfer tank setups have a fuel pump that will manually (manual switch) or automatically transfer fuel from one tank to the other and eliminate the potential of your cross over house to get ripped off, smashed or other wise dump all your fuel onto the ground.

For the crossover line you’ll want to use a angle iron piece to keep it from being ripped out or snagged on something. And put shut off valves on each end for when you rip them off. Plus use the steel braid type for strength.
@NFBartos

I was thinking a solid piece of steam pipe, with a short piece of braided line on each end connecting to the tanks. That line is going to be vulnerable!
