We have all owned a victorinox. For us it's a childhood knife. A knife that got us into knives.
But we all also know edge retention is not that great..... MKM changed all of that! They made a multitool in M390 steel! so... is it a good EDC? Find out in todays episode!
Check out the MKM in M390!

Personally no saw makes it a no go for me, saw is essential for a Victorinox/multi tool. The extra edge retention of the blade doesn't mean 💩 to me. Victorinox farmer in alox is perfection for "bushcraft" the saw makes notching extremely easy, saw to the exact depth & then clear the material with the blade. Or pair the farmer with a larger blade & there's nothing you can't do.

Spot on. I'd love a M390 blade on my Victorinox SAKs, but if that mean I loose the saw, the deal is off. Titan on the scales are cold as "swear word" in the winter and nothing I'd like though.

exactly! haven't needed to touch up mine in months despite the odd jobs and still shaves. in day to day life you actually won't use a knife all the time, so this M390 snobbery is way over my head.
@barbar7746

Me neither..maybe if you cut cardboard non-stop for 1 day it will be dull..but then you need less than 1 minute to make it sharp again.
@thymii6946
@thymii6946 2 жыл бұрын
@@barbar7746 and then again a thin enough blade will keep ripping through after dulling even. But safety becomes another issue. Cardboard slicing is not a good sharpness test for anything with less than 3mm thick spine and not scandiground.

What I do is I only use the small blade for everything(98% of the time its enough, unless I REALLY need to use the large) and then I know I ALWAYS have the large blade in near perfect fresh sharpened shape for use in a “real” woods or must have sharp situation…. If I carry a Case stockman(or the like) I use the small blade for everything, Spey blade for skin/scalpel(low angle high polished edge) use only, and save the large main blade for must use/need situations(fruit/food/wood) only… I find I get a lot more longer use out of ALL the blades on my pocket knife that way, and the small blade sharpens back so fast/don’t need to sharpen them all as often!!

ill admit that the victorinox dont hold a edge very long but the fact that you can spend 45 seconds and get it stupid sharp and shaving your face again im not going to complain i use it for a bunch of simple tasks every day at work and the one i have has the saw on it and it works perfect for cutting drywall

In regaurds from its usefulness as a knife it seems to trump the victorinox. But far as its function as a multi-tool and ultility i think the victorinox huntsman is unbeatable, i use every tool of my huntsman, its not just a knife every tool on a victorinox has versatility. Putting a fork on whats supposed to be (im assuming due to them using titanium) a lightweight more utilitarian multi-tool is a bit of a red flag to begin with. Its like buying expensive lightweight hiking gear and then carrying bricks in your backpack to build a chair.

After carrying the same victorinox daily for the better part of a decade, my most used tool is the cap lifter. Since it's a 111mm it had a quite beefy caplifter and it's great for prying tasks.

for Victorinox, it would be a Nightmare, to put different Steels on their product line, just because of the numbers they produce, just imagine then this model in that steel and that model in that steel. But I think their steel is not so bad, as it is easy to sharpen, and in all fairness, yo need to sharpen even the best hypersuperduper steel once in awhile.

A few years back I purchased a Leatherman Charge made with Titanium and S30V blade for my daughter and myself. I think this was a limited run, though I'm not totally sure on that. At one point I did baton with it and while the wood I was using was not wet like what you were working with it did surprising well. Now, I'm not going to make a practice of using it in this way ever again unless it's vital, like end of the world shit, it did prove itself to be strong and durable. I've carried it everyday since, especially on camping trips in the BWCAW ( Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in case you want to google it) Which is some of the more hardcore styles of camping only accessible via Canoe and portaging between lakes with some pretty extreme elevation shifts and hazardous terrain throughout. One never knows what they'll run into so adding a multitool to your EDC is highly recommendable. Hope you two are dry now. 😎 Cheers!!!

Great Video guys. I have carried a Victorinox since I was 10 years old. (I won't say how long ago that was but I still have my first one and that model hasn't been made for decades. I currently carry the 1 handed Trecker. (Actually the German Army issue version.) as well as the Swiss Tool Spirit X. They are my E.D.C. and when I'm camping I carry a larger fixed blade. (Usually a Condor Bushlore.) Now I know these knives don't have the best Steel in the World but I carry them for a reason. I can easily sharpen them in the Field. Now that being said I also carry a full sized Saw. (A folding Buck Saw I made.) as well as a Camp Axe. I don't mind carrying the extra weight even on longer hike. It's worth it. (I'm no Putin. I'm not strong like Bull**************************shit.)

Angling the handle 90 degrees does nothing for the stress on the pivot. That's only for Svord Peasant like knives where you can grab the extended blade part to open the knife. Batoning is not a task for a folder in general. Cutting wedges is. I have no use for a fork or a corkscrew in the outdoors. Titanium handle scales and better edge retention on the steel could be nice. But as you mention the power of a SAK is that you can put a workable edge back on with some flat stone you find in nature. So for me it's still the SAK with alox handles for the outdoors.

As always love the work ya do! As far as MKM vers a Vic.. well I take it for what it is; the MKM is a beautiful and elegant tool suited for a Gent to go on a picnic, dinner, or evening out with his special Gal and can also be a great little EDC for general purpose but until they add options such as a saw. metal file, pliers, etc etc it just doesn't compare all that well. And price per performance at nearly 4 to 5 times the cost between the two for like tooled options or less if you get a Vic with a lot more options I'd rather carry a 4 inch leather strop in my pocket made from a cut up old full grain leather belt(which I do}.

I doubt that Dawson's differential heat treat would significantly change the performance of their blades. 3V is insanely tough stuff at 60 HRC and there's no fucking way to unintentionally break a 3,5 mm blade stock of that just using your bare hands... Magnacut on the other hand seems to perform amazingly good when heat treated well. I mean that stuff is THE ONE steel that gives a great combination of toughness, edge retention and corrosion resistance that every steel snob has been dreaming of

Well I am not Dutch but I love the smoked mackerel. But your weather has made me understand why the Dutch have never won a World Cup. They need a flooded paddock. Great review and good luck next World Cup

try out a new ASKknifes Jefferson made out of Magnacut steel, not the s45vn version. That thing is a modular overbuilt SAK. not a lot of tool at this moment but more's coming up

Hi DBK, please can you review these 2 knives, the Bark River Bravo 1 Hunter LT and the Bark River Gunny Hunter LT, with Magnacut blade steel, these are not yet available in Magnacut yet, but if your viewers contact DLT trading and Knives Ship Free and also Knives and Tools, then these will be put into production, if the request is also for Pre-Order on these then one gets to choose handle material and color, pins and liners. these are ideal bushcraft-survival-hunting knives, let us hurry with this before the war gets crazy and prices shoot up or just become unavailable.

Your videos are entertaining but I think you convince me not to buy things more often than not. If I had to choose between a Victorinox with the same limited tools I would pick the MKM hands down for the blade steel but calling it the best multi tool or fire making or any tool is a stretch. The tool is too limited to call it anything other than a EDC tool for the city. A LOT of Victorinox's knives have tool options like the saw, awl, file that have 90 degree spines and a tool like a Victorinox Huntsmen is going to be way more versatile in the fire making role than a simple EDC tool is.
