Also had mine 7 years now (in 2019). Mine looks great as well, but with no rust at all. Just some light cosmetic imperfections. I use it extensively for working on medical equipment and whatever misc. stuff comes up. I thought maybe it was time for something new so I tried the Leatherman Free P4. Sent it for warranty repair within a week! The Screwdriver/ruler tool easily twisted doing the exact type of work this has withstood for 7 years! The P4 is weak novelty with heavy marketing. The Spirit has withstood the test of time! If anyone out there MUST get a Leatherman, at least stick with the Wave.

People, keep referring to the blade as a "Butter Blade" (probably from NUTNfancy. That exact blade shape is the result of centuries of evolution of blade design for FUNCTION. It is the exact design worked out to give the best most precise control for cutting functions where precision is mandatory. The oddity is not the blade shape, it is the fact that other tools don't have that blade shape. Once you use it for awhile. you find that it is exceptionally well worked out, unless you just stab things with a knife.
@rodx55717 жыл бұрын
Its not a butter knife until you use it as one. And you are correct about the research, it took 500 years for the swiss army to determine the perfect knife shape for combating hostile bread, and cheese. I will also remind you it comes with a corkscrew, in case you encounter a hostile bottle of wine while in combat with the aforementioned hostile bread and cheese.

What is your thought about how to access the main blade compared to Leatherman Wave?
@darkchild577 жыл бұрын
I used a Wave for several years before getting the Swiss Spirit. At first I was a bit annoyed having to two hand the knife open. But after a while I just got use to it. It's not the most convenient but then again I thought, if I really needed fast access to a knife I would just pull out my dedicated knife. Right now I'm using a SOG Powerlock, testing it's features and usefulness... the tools are even more annoying to access lol. I may be switching back to the Spirit soon.
@rodx55717 жыл бұрын
If i may interject, No comparison, i carry a Wave or Surge every day, the Leatherman tools main blades are one hand open, and one hand close very quickly. I have the Spirit also, very smooth, very precise, but if you dont have fingernails, or something else, its not a quick simple operation to open or close. That said, both tools are high quality, its all a matter of preference. The Spirit in plier mode does feel a bit better in the hand due to the curves, which is a reason i spent the $$$ to find out. Still going to carry my Wave though. Hope this helps.

I can't remember brand new how it was but at this moment, closed has the slightest of play but only when I really muscle it. Opened, it also has the slightest bit of play and again I have to really try to feel it. One of the thing's I dislike about some of the multi tools is nail nicks and tough detent, bent a few nails because of it lol. Have you tried taking it apart [if you can] or submerged it in hot water + dried and re-lubed? Maybe the awl will stay in place if some of the grime is gone.
@darkchild578 жыл бұрын
Well we all know Victorinox loves their nail nicks:) With that being said it's not too bad pulling these tools out. They were a bit stiff brand new but after seven years it's loosened up considerably. Unfortunately the tool is together forever...can't take these apart!

They both have their pros and cons. I feel the pliers cutting ability is slightly better on the Wave. However the handle comfort is horrific IMO. I’m big fan of Victorinox and the Spirit X in particular. These video reviews would be much more helpful if the creators would show the tools in actual use pointing out their pros & cons for different tasks. The process of opening a can opener, telling us it is a can opener that has not been used much and then marching through all the tools in similar fashion puts me to sleep.

I like mine. I just have one gripe, the hard wire cutters are soft like butter, totally ruined them on a thin nail. My Leatherman Charge/ wave would handle it with no issue. Other than that, it's a fantastic tool, it's just not meant for heavy use.
@darkchild578 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to hear that your wire cutters are shot. I've had no issues yet but then again I don't use the wire cutters too often. My most used tools are the knife, pliers and screwdrivers. I will say that the knife dulls rather quickly and the serrated edge makes it that much harder for me to sharpen. I'm sure my Surge would have eaten every nail and wire I throw at it lol. Good to hear some feedback from other users of the Spirit!

hello. im a big victorinox fan, mostly cause of their great price/value and quality. i had and have quite many swisstools, pockets knives from vic, some leathermans and tested other brand multitools. i think the review is missing too important things and is lighting the tool not objectively enough. i gave it a thumbs down cause this. its misleading. my main disturbances with swisstools are the fingernail openings, partially extremely hard to open tools - depends on the article someone gets, if the rivets are pressed hard or more soft in it - and the very conservative designs, missing innovations from victorinox. i think its crucial to point out: a one hand opening tool is just a world difference in daily usage than a fingernail opening system. swisstools arent made for daily usage in comparsion to a, lets say, leatherman with one hand opening. they are more of a "here and there" toolbox, several times a day use at most. and this not in times, where gloves are being worn.
