If it were not for the fact that the scissors on the Swiss tool are so good...it would be the spirit hands down for me...I wish laws in the UK would alow them both to be legal. Still the highest quality multitools in the world...no contest.

Yea very nice quality but not the excellent precision of the needles as the leathermans ones… far best pliers and precision needles for leatherman.

@@miketsaron7284 I agree they are more precision on the LM and with the replaceable cutters on something like the Wave that puts them ahead of the Vic.

But it’s easy enough to throw a Compact in your pocket. The nice thing about the Spirit is that within the limitations of the design, they gave us the beefiest most overbuilt scissors they could. It can handle tasks that the normal SAK scissors cannot. I’d still probably prefer the standard large scissors, but the Spirit scissors aren’t awful.

I got a Swiss Tool X plus on my 13th birthday from my father. I'm approaching 30 this year and it's still working beautifully! I love it! Don't know how many times I've used it in a pinch. I've taken good care of it and who knows, when I have a kid maybe they get to have it on their 13th birthday. :)

Perfect video Sir. A really good way to finish the year, it really shows your progress in terms of audio, script, confidence, and more. This is literally everything one might want to know about these two tools. I wrote a lengthy comment about the Spirit being my favorite piece of EDC gear, I just can't recommend it enough. It's both a beast and a gentleman. Totally capable and robust, yet precise and shiny. Happy new year to the you and to the entire Gadget family 🎉

Excellent video, thanks! For me, two of the most used multitool tools are scissors and small screwdriver. The ruler is what drew me to choose the Swiss Tool over the Spirit before finding this video, and I'm content. Okay, maybe not fully content. I kinda want the Spirit too now! 😁 Edit: I have received the Swiss tool and I don't even notice it on my belt. I view multitools slightly differently than you do. For me, they're more of a convenience than something to get out of trouble, so I use mine a lot. They save me a trip to the toolbox. I'll go to the toolbox to get dedicated tools for bigger jobs, but having a more capable heavy-duty tool is even more convenient for me. Of course, now I've seen your Swiss Tool vs Surge comparison...

Funny thing is larger tools can feel lightweight and wear pockets less because they spread the load. Was game changing when I accidentally discovered a LM Supertool 300 is crazily better pocket carry than a wave and without outside opening tools doesn't damage pockets after leaving one in a jacket in a hurry w/o noticing till weeks later. Swiss Tool X much the same works in a jacket or jeans after a week to adapt or some crazy weather makes you avoid pocket use.

After your review comparing the Spirit X to the Wave+ I picked up the Spirit X and really like it (already had a Wave+). Very ergonomic and easy to use with the outward opening tools. I like the Swisstool quality and features, but it’s just a bit larger and heavier than I prefer. Although if I were a handyman or maintenance person I’d have no problem carrying it on my belt in a pouch as an EDC, and taking full advantage of all the tools. Thanks for the very detailed in-depth comparison!

great comparison ! i would like to see a scaled down to Swisstool, 6-7cm long. sadly the X is shorter but wider, like a Gerber Suspension ( a crappy tool with soft steel i just bought). the only thing i didnt like in my Swisstool was the woodsaw, usefull only for dry wood. thats why i gave it away and bought for the 2nd time a Surge. replaceable tshanks. all default woodsaws are not good for my needs. i am aware that the woodsaw in a 6-7 cm victorinox would be useless too, no matter how the teeth are configurated. so for now im stuck with Surge (and i kinda love it).

The spirit is a nice tool, but if you can get both for a similar price, get the real deal, at least if you ask me! I got my first swisstool years ago, they never let me down. Additionally you can use the full size jot only as a ruler, its as a 90 degree angle if folded on one side. Something i thought I’d never use… until i needed it multiple times. The prying tool is something I’d really miss on the spirit, together with the much better pliers the swisstool has. Again, the spirit is an amazing tool, but if the 80 Grams don’t bother you, I would recommend the full size one. It’s just the better of these great tools 😁👍

For me, its all about the quality of the steel...the Swiss Tools are both superior to the Leatherman, as the latter has steel that is "springier." I have used the Swiss Tool since 2001 for a variety of applications. The pry bar, the Phillips head screwdriver, the serrated blade, and the regular jacknife blade get the most use. The Phillips head NEVER cams out whether the screw head is big or small. Enjoyed your very good report.

Thanks for another great comparison video, Jon. I have a Victorinox CyberTool 34 Swiss Army Knife for years which has been extremely handy, and now looking at them all I'm trying to choose the best pliers-based multitool. Bought a Leatherman Micra recently for the car keychain & now looking for a larger type as well. Still trying to decide whether to get a Leatherman Wave+ or a Vic multitool. Looking for maximum functionality and portability at the same time. That rules out tools like the Surge - just way too heavy to be portable for me. With the Wave+, my understanding is that you can get a Leatherman Ratchet driver and bit set to fit in the same pouch alongside the Wave+ multitool, which is great. From what I read, with the Vic multitools, the quality of the build and finish is better, and that draws me to the Spirit X. Can I ask you, with the Spirit X is there room in the pouch for the Victorinox Ratchet & bit set to fit in alongside the multitool itself? And as a complete set of multitool with bit set, all self- contained in 1 pouch, which would be your choice - Wave + or Spirit X? Best, James

Fantastic video . I used to own the spirit x and it was a beautiful tool . For my job though the toolset on the wave + made it a better tool for my needs . The replaceable cutters . The ease of taking the tool apart and the mini screwdriver are indispensable . The vic was the better built though . Very much a gentleman’s multi tool , like a Swiss watch . I loved the way the tools clicked into place . My wave has bean severely used and for rough use I think the leatherman edges it but the vic was beautiful .

Well done. One thing about the Swiss Tool's Phillips driver is its orientation. It curves more into the centerline of the entire tool making for much easier turning of screws, at least from my perspective. YMMV.

The swiss tool wins for me as a heavier multi tool that i use for work tasks. I also carry a pioneer alox x so have scissors on this. I wear mine with the pocket clip clipped directly on to the waste band on my trousers on my left hip, therfore the extra weight makes no difference. Worn like this it remains securely clipped and does not cause any issues eg when sitting down or driving etc. The 9mm screwdriver and thicker Phillips win it for me. I find i can frequently carry out basic maintenance tasks without a trip to my truck and the tools being sturdy are able to directly perform as good as quality dedicated ones like a wera phillips or knipex pliers. I can easily do things like wiring a plug, changing crimp terminals, pulling auto fuses changing door handles or locks or tigtening or losening jublie clips, removing control pannel covers, opening plastic water meter/ stop tap covers. Etc. I work with machinery and plant so i do give mine regular intensive use although i dont abuse it eg trying to cut barbed wire. I really like the serated blade so prefer to carry an additional pioneer x or compact alongside to give me scissors. A side chisel blade on the swiss tool like on the spirit would be good although i use the awl blade for horizontal scrapeing tasks.

Contrary to what you mentioned, mine has the serrated blade AND scissors, alas no file. Otherwise it is as you describe. Do you know what the the "shape" in the plier-closure spring is for? Love my Swiss Tool. I didn’t carry it much until Leatherman decided to rip off Tale of Knives’ sheath design which made me so angry that I put away all of my Leatherman tools and broke out the Swiss Tool. The Swiss Tool is so much more well made than any multitool I have ever owned. The build quality, fit and finish, smoothness of tool and plier deployment, and ergonomics are better than any multitool I own. Makes me sad that I didn’t carry it more often. I love the swisstool x, bought it as a replacement for the leatherman charge tti, because onehand opening is not street legal in germany. The quality is outstanding, it feels almost too nice to use compared to a leatherman, that got rough edges everywhere and doesnt care about scratches. But the action of the pliers, the opening and closing of each tool with a distinct clack, very satisfying and in my opinion unmatched. I carry it open in a plastic holder from victorinox and it shows its bling very nice, man jewelery at its finest. There goes no day without using it and judging it from my in 98 made swisstool, those things will last a lifetime. Bought a new one this year and am quite happy about the beefed up pliers, way better file and the opening of the pliers is even nicer (didnt think that could be possible). I have a Leatherman Surge on its way to me, hope it can live up to the hype.

I have both. Spirit much better size for EDC and feels better made. Swiss tool heavy and tools harder to pick out.

a little bit beefier, a little bit better made trumps the size advantage of the Spirit. So i'd always go for the better quality product which is the original

Its kind of strange that the smaller tool has the heavier duty tools, Victorinox should update the Swisstool with Spirit tools

👍 I also have both tools and agree with your comparison. Once I acquired the Spirit X the Swiss Tool X was relegated to the glove box of my motor home because the Spirit is much more convenient to carry around and more comfortable to use. But, as you say both are excellent. I have not in 15+/- years found a job one could accomplish the other could not. These are IMHO the best “bang for the buck” in multitools. I still do not understand why anyone would continue to manufacture multitools that require opening the pliers up to get to the other tools; it seems a no-brainer to me that this Victorinox feature is the only way to go. Good video, thank you.

I have a question. Some tools on my new Victorinox swisstool x don't firmly lock, they have a little play. It's normal? The spirit MX don't have this problem.

One of the two main springs of my Spirit popped out a lot . Despite repeated attempts to place it back, it still came out . Finally it broke. After being sent to be repaired, it STILL popped out. It's a designed flaw, I'll stick with the X which doesn't seem to have the same problem

The Spirit is beautiful and elegant but the saw and file are so ridiculously thick compared to their 91mm counterparts that I despise them and the scissors are just barely functional also compared to the 91mm version, also the phillips driver just plain sucks and cams out on anything other than larger screws, which is most screws you would consider using a multi-tool for. There are a lot of positives but the negatives just outweigh me ever carrying it. Now that I think about it I will probably sell my Spirit X on ebay just to get rid of it.

Another great review…and I wholeheartedly agree with your summation of (what I consider, as well as you do) the intrinsic mission statement of ALL multi-tools and that is: to get one out of a jam, immediately and without having to stop, and source a dedicated tool, in that moment in order to solve your problem. Coincidentally I both gifted, AND received a Spirit Tool X for Christmas yesterday, and while I own and love my numerous Leatherman devices, the differences in refinement and fit and finish between the brands is quite apparent and the Victorinox is certainly the winner in that department. Of course I have several SAKs, so Victorinox’s reputation for quality and refinement is not new to me. But, this is my first Vic multi-tool, and likely my last unless another model is ever introduced as a Swisstool isn’t on my radar. Again Thanks for some of the best reviews available.

not much you can ask more, still the best, it misses a more exciting design, deep clip on and a really good diamond file for my taste, the Tool X does, otherwise you can't ask for better quality.

Good video. I've been looking for a multitool w/ good scissors. I was hoping it would be a VSAK, but it's looking like your video on Leathermans convinced me I should consider the Micra. Tell me if I'm wrong? The criteria I tried comparing against for the scissors are: cut as well as the VSAK Scissors do; don't rely on that flimsy spring mechanism like on the VSAK: A RangerGrip 71 Gardener had the type of scissors I like. Consider the Micra because it seems to have great reviews for its scissors. What are your thoughts?

A work of art no doubt. I have the older swisstool, the larger model with the saw and the extra serrated blade. It's my second one as I I unintentionally left my first one behind in a hurried cross country move. I would like to get a Spirit someday

I live in the U.S. and retired. I enjoy working on my old car and doing handy work around the house. I’m having a hard time deciding on a multi tool. Every time I turn around another one pops up. It’s not something I would walk around with in my pocket everyday but may throw in a day pack or sling depending where I maybe going. Do you have some ideas what I may purchase that won’t break the bank so to speak?
