Too cold for concrete? I wimped out!

Join the concrete crew as we FINALLY finish this driveway on a cold fall day. I wimped out and ended up covering it with plastic as I just didn't want to take the risk that the concrete might freeze. Ray lost my truck key in the concrete and our favorite restaurant was closed but overall for a Monday I can't complain. Enjoy

Bugs is a corner stone of whatever he wants so I’m sure that being that Ryan had no other alternative.. than to let he go on his way. The weather held up so long through december we decided to do a bunch of cleanups NOW versus spring. Got into some lot cleanups, we graded a few building pads in hartford, chipped a few trees...cant say its been bad in our area. Nice to see a video in the cold, we set some stone stairs yesterday and today with lots of rain lined up I'm glad our outside work is done. OH, Ryan stock on on plastic at Neus, its HALF the price for 6 mil clear or black 20x100.

Listening to the cold starts with the mack never gets old. Mack engines aren't my favorite, but it will do. Ryan i am in SC and we use to cover curb up with blankets, on this day and evening was the coldest ive ever been. It was 34° but the wind was blowing 20 mph. Looking forward to the new videos. Hey Ryan. This is just a suggestion. You should have a daily check sheet in each truck and piece of equipment, so when your crew gets to the lot in the morning they do a walk around on the equipment and follow the checklist. Such as tire condition, oil level, hydro level, leak checks, etc. This will help your crew be more responsible of there equipment, and prevent break downs. Just a suggestion.

Lt. Dan said it best, "There is one item of GI gear that can be the difference between a live grunt and a dead grunt, SOCKS!" Nothing like working in the cold with wet feet! I am in the water treatment industry and tell my coworkers all the time to make sure they have extra clothes (that fit) in thier lockers at all times. everything they have on (Boots, undergarments, etc...) should have a backup in case of emergencies. Between basins and pipes, there is literally millions of gallons of water around us, not to mention chemicals, and having those extra clothes can be a life saver. I know that isn't feasible for those who work out of vehicles, but a pack or two of socks under the seat can make your day better when your feet are wet.

When I worked up in Dead Horse, Alaska cementing oil well casings, the cement was stored in upright 2500 cu/ft silos. When the air temps were -40F that was the cement temp too. We mixed a slurry of cement and water to pump down hole to set the casing. We used heated water to have about 50F slurry. We had to be very careful not to thaw the 2600 ft. deep permafrost that is the bore hole.

We always use 28 degrees within 24hrs as our threshold down south! May be a little over cautious but like you we are about $180yd for mud, so tearing out and repouring is not something we ever want to do. Just poured a foundation and porch with 2% nca at my house for an addition a couple weeks ago. Had 25 degree nights for three nights in a row after pouring. Covered it same way you just did and uncovered during the day, turned out great. No curing marks and no issues.

I'm a Civil Engineer here in Australia and in the past we did major concrete highway pours and to protect newly poured concrete from the weather, either it be the cold or rain or heat, we used to also put first a layer of geotextile mat and then plastic on top to hold the heat and moisture in better and also allow it to cure evenly. Also found doing this we got less scuff marks since the plastic alone had gave less protection from foot trafficking when putting the sheeting on.

Those old 7.3 trucks also had problems in ignition tumblers getting old and tired causing the solenoid to not get full voltage...then the grounds were pretty crummy too do additional ground can help from starter bolt to frame to battery.

ryan, youre not wimping out, youre being a responsible business owner. im glad our season ended last week but we still got some covering in. most of the time we use 12x25 insulated blankets and rarely use poly. about the only time we use poly is when we know we have to cover and the concrete is going to be a little too soft and going to scar. we lay the poly down first and then cover with blankets. that way we dont have to worry about dragging the blankets across the somwhat fresh concrete and scar it up. theres times when we have to pour early afternoon to finish a job and thats when we do the poly then blankets unless we can reach across with the blankets to gently set them down. there is alot more thought process to doing concrete than people realize and that goes for most trades. its the minute details that regular people dont think about when they look at the final product of any trade.

If I am not mistaken from my days in concrete, they start heating the water up here in beginning of November regardless of temps and stuff. I had my guys pour a small walk at my house in the snow and below freezing. We blanketed it for a week, got down into the teens but if you picked up that blanket it had moisture all over the place. 3 years later when I sold that house that sidewalk was perfect.

Our guys pour concrete all winter long in Utah! They use concrete “blankets” to cover for 3 days after. End up with a lot of concrete marks. I’ve also seen foundations covered with a tent made from 6ml plastic and heated with a couple propane heaters! Excavation and Concrete work in the winter; work twice as hard to accomplish half as much. Good work
