About the Alberta-British Columbia border, I love the way part of it follows the Continental Divide. TCH 1 follows the Kicking Horse Pass which is a famous and busy Canadian Rocky Mountain Pass of the Continental Divide.

As always, a great video. Something to note about the highways in BC. Road building in BC is much more of a challenge than in most other provinces, especially compared to Alberta. Other than the Rockies, Alberta is mainly flat and so it's relatively easy and comparatively inexpensive to build a four-lane highway or freeway in the province. In BC, on the other hand, you literally have to move mountains. You can see in this video how the mountains close in as soon as the highway crosses from Alberta into BC, so the challenge to improve roads in BC is bigger. It should be noted that the last major overhaul to BC's highways was in the 1950s and 60s under WAC Bennett, eg. the upgrade of the Fraser Canyon, the building of the Rogers Pass route, the freeway from Vancouver to Chilliwack, and also from Vancouver to the US border, major upgrades of several other highways, replacing wooden bridges with concrete ones, the first Port Mann Bridge in Vancouver, the Second Narrows Bridge to North Vancouver, the Massey Tunnel south of Vancouver, the tunnels in the Fraser Canyon, the snowsheds in the Rogers Pass, etc. etc. The Bennett govt. had the advantage of the postwar economic boom to get these projects done in a relatively short time. A lot of overhauling needs to be done again, but the economy is different and so are government priorities (doesn't really matter which party is in power). At least the Trans Canada between Kamloops and the BC border is gradually being worked on.

You did an excellent job keeping your distance away from the truck. I think it takes a great deal of patience to not even attempt to pass the truck at all :)

hi trans Canada Phil great video, what percent of TransCanada highway is divide 4 lanes in Britsh Coulumbia B.c government is behind the times making road safer. Much of the highway 1 is divide 4 lanes across Canada ?
@TransCanadaPhil7 жыл бұрын
yes BC has a lot of catching up to do. The TCH is divided through Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. But then it goes to 2-lanes again across Ontario.

Yes I've used a lot of Above & Beyond tracks in road videos. They seem to go together really well :-). Thanks for checking out my channel, I have a lot of other drives too.

That highway badly needs to be twinned/upgraded, but it will surely be more expensive through Yoho than through Banff, as there isn't the benefit of a broad river valley (the Bow Valley) to make construction easier. Most likely, any upgrade through Yoho would have most (if not all) of it separated by a concrete median barrier, and even then significant blasting will be needed.
@TransCanadaPhil7 жыл бұрын
yes and i'm not sure how they are going to handle the big hill, or if they want to try to reduce the grade, possibly by starting to elevate portions of the road perhaps long before the hill while in the valley floor so lesson the grade?

Spiral tunnels?
@TransCanadaPhil7 жыл бұрын
Patrick Carey yeah that would require a huge expansion of the railway spiral tunnels to accomodate a road, not sure if that would be possible.

Sarcasm. lol. On the other hand perhaps Elon Musk might come up with something. The Kicking Horse Pass could be a challenge he would enjoy.

I plan to drive from Regina to Nanaimo in end of May or June 2016 right when summer begins I should be well planned for the trip but do you go through more gas going through the mountains & is there much places to fill up? Also what is the general speed limit I know the video is sped up but it looks like there is some speedsters on the trans Canada lol
@TransCanadaPhil9 жыл бұрын
The main places to fill up on gas that you'd probably want to stop at are Medicine Hat, Calgary, Canmore, Golden, Revelstoke, Kamloops, Vancouver. There's pretty much at least one place to fill up at least once every 40 min or so. As for speed limits, it's pretty easy going and fast from Regina to Calgary, a solid 110 km/hr. The Road from Calgary to the BC border is also VERY good (Freeway Grade) and similarily fast. It slows down once you enter BC until you get to Kamloops as portions of the road are only 2 lane. From Kamloops to Vancouver, don't take the Trans-Canada Highway, instead take the newer Coquihalla Highway (Highway 5). It's a more direct route and it's a complete grade seperated Freeway that you can drive on at full-speed (110-120km/h).
