I feel heard right now. For the first time in 31 years. I do not self regulate. I don’t even know how to teach my kids. I’m always late or early. I cry for every emotion that arises because it’s automatically the reaction my brain causes for everything. I am not productive but I am smart as hell. My sister has always stated that I am a bank of knowledge but never useful 😅 she’s right!

Oh yes, the quick to anger aspect was so strong in my father. He had so many other traits that were so wonderful that I could forgive that. Being the youngest, I observed what NOT to do that would cause my father’s anger to spark. He was allowed to be angry, but if we kids exhibited anger, it was seen as disrespect. Which I know is ridiculous. Anger is a feeling! I can be quick to anger sometimes. The old tricks of taking a deep breath and counting to 10 (or 1,000!) helps. It’s important to nurture yourself and express your needs rather than holding it in. Holding it in will just cause a huge explosion later that will be out-of-proportion to the visible cause of anger. So don’t hold it in, but don’t open the pressure valve all the way. Take a walk and don’t drive if you feel angry or edgy. (I’m ADHD-Combined type myself)

How do I find a Doctor like yourself near me? All my doctor does is say, "how are you? How's the medicine? Here's your next prescription." My life is in shambles and I'm medicated. My 2 children are suffering horribly with adhd and with a mother who can barely help them let alone help myself. I already have a therapist that I see for other issues but they almost want to blame outside stresses and say that's why I have adhd. I feel like people with adhd are just left to suffer and we really do not get the help that others do. I feel like adhd is a disability but nothing out there to help fix it.

I know your comment is several years old, but just in case you still have your YT account, here I go lol! Russell Barkley has officially “retired” but I doubt he will ever completely retire, you know? He has over 40 years of clinical experience on ADHD. I like how knowledgeable he is about the dangers of untreated ADHD. I also like Dr Ned Hallowell, look him up. Hallowell talks about the wonderful traits of ADHD & that can be very encouraging, especially if you have kids to educate about the condition. There are great things about it - intelligence, creativity, etc....but it’s true also that it is important to be treated. I think our prisons would be less full if people were correctly evaluated for ADHD earlier in life. The medications have been used for 70 years & nobody can overdose on them (the brain only uses what it can & the rest is secreted in urination) Adderall is cheaper than prisons & it would be better for society for people to reach their full potential.

Yes, I agree! I just started to read his book and I feel so comfortable with, I feel like there is somebody with a lot of empath and experience looking through my soul and saying what I should do to deal better with my daily difficulties and that I can finally improve myself.

In 1978 Russell Barkley said the affect of Ritalin on kids in a classroom with ADHD were "Disappointing" and had no big improvement. In 1998 he said that Ritalin will be one of the tools for helping people in the 21st Century. Barkley went even further in 2003. He said "Once convinced of a ADHD diagnosis there is NO reason to avoid Ritalin". Now what do you think was behind this sea change of him going against his own research findings? What do you think was behind Barkley's seachange?

Every doctor is getting kickbacks from Big Pharma. I don’t recall seeing any drug commercials back in the 80’s, except aspirin ones. They don’t want to find cures no more than automobile makers making cars that last more than 20 years. They want the patient or the consumer to continuously coming back to buy pharmaceutical drugs or car/parts.

Barkley won't tell you this. I will There are no scientific tests for ADHD.[1] The diagnosis is dependent on third party (usually teacher and parent) reports of a child’s behaviour because as stated in DSM5 “no biological marker is diagnostic for ADHD”. These behaviours include, making careless mistakes, not paying attention or listening, not finishing school work or chores, disliking or avoiding homework, being disorganised, losing or forgetting things, interrupting, talking too much, not playing quietly. The most commonly prescribed ADHD medications are amphetamines (e.g. dexamphetamine) or near amphetamines (e.g. Ritalin).[2] They are addictive and often abused and some adults seek a diagnosis of ADHD in order to misuse or sell them. In the USA methamphetamine (brand name Desoxyn)[3] is a ‘medication’ approved to treat children with ADHD’ as young as six. There is nothing ‘ADHD specific’ about the effects of drugs.[4] Although responses vary, most people become temporarily more narrowly focused and compliant on low dose amphetamines whether or not they have been labelled ADHD. The claim that improved focus after taking ‘medication’ confirms that a diagnosis is correct is just plain wrong. Across the globe the youngest children in a classroom are at a much higher risk of being diagnosed with and medicated for ADHD than there older classmates.[5] This happens both in countries with high and low ADHD diagnosis and medication use rates, indicating that even at low rates misdiagnosis is very common. ADHD drugs sometimes mask the signs of serious problems such as sexual, emotional or physical abuse, bullying or trauma.[6] Some children are doubly abused when the original abuse is compounded by the harmful administration of amphetamines. ADHD drugs have significant potential adverse effects.[7] They range from common short term effects like insomnia, loss of appetite and headaches, through to severe cardiovascular and psychiatric problems, addiction, growth retardation, suicidality and addiction. ADHD stimulants (amphetamines and near amphetamines) are not smart drugs.[8] In low doses they usually narrow focus and increase compliance with instructions[9] which can allow an individual to concentrate on an assigned task. However, they can inhibit creativity[10] and there is evidence from Canada[11] and Australia[12] indicating that their long term use is associated with declining academic performance. Despite multiple claims over the last twenty years of imminent breakthroughs the search for hypothesised ‘ADHD genes’ and the biochemical cause/s of ADHD have been unsuccessful.[13] In the future it is possible that geneticists may identify genes that influence behaviour, including individual differences in attentiveness and impulsivity, and therefore the likelihood of being labelled with ADHD. If this happens (and it is a very big if) this would not necessarily make ADHD a legitimate disease. All it would demonstrate is difference, and difference is not disease. Boys are between 3 and 4 times more likely to be diagnosed with, and ‘medicated’ for, ADHD than girls.[14] This is not surprising. Many of the diagnostic criteria of ADHD, particularly the hyperactive/impulsive behaviours (including fidgeting, climbing and running about, being on the go, playing loudly and interrupting) are more common in boys than girls. ADHD is very, very, big business and it is getting bigger. The global market sales for ‘ADHD medications’ was valued at an estimated US$16.4 billion in 2018 and is forecast to be worth US$24.9 Billion By 2025.[15] These figures do not include the payments received for diagnosing, researching, promoting and providing non-drug treatments. The estimated global ADHD drug sales for 2018 of US$16.4 billion is larger than the National Income (GDP) of 68 of the 186 countries for which the International Monetary Fund provided 2018 data. It was also bigger than the combined GDP of Antigua and Barbuda, Seychelles, Guinea-Bissau, Solomon Islands, Grenada, Gambia, St Kits and Nevis, Vanuatu, Samoa, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Comoros, Dominica, Tonga, Sao Tome and Principe, Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, and Tuvalu.[16]

Currently, there are no objective biological tests for any of the mental illnesses in the DSM-5. However, a lack of biomarkers does not mean a disorder is not legitimate, or should not be medicated. You would be hard pressed to find a doctor who would tell a patient not to take their antipsychotic medication because there a reliable biomarker for schizophrenia has yet to be identified. Regarding ADHD medication, as someone who works in an addiction treatment program, I can tell you firsthand that access to treatment, including medication, for ADHD greatly *reduces* an individual's risk of addiction; here is a study that speaks to this effect: www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/07/170712201249.htm

@@TheFascismforfun Well said Keith. People fail to understand that most disorders that are diagnosed from the DSM-5 have no clear and uniform etiology as to how someone can develop a disorder. That does not mean the disorder doesn't exist (the symptoms do) but rather that the symptoms for an agreed upon disorder definition align for most people who have those symptoms. Mr. Alan thinks that all medical answers need certainty. That was never the point of medicine. The point is reducing symptoms and increasing functioning and well-being with certainty first, consensus second, harm versus benefit being third in figuring out how to define and make decisions regarding health. I am studying to get my license in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. But I also have ADHD so its good to see fellow ADHDers in the field.
