This video is incredibly comprehensive and well made, good job man! I began collecting in 2017 after receiving my old SNES collection from my mom’s house. Luckily I had a lot of the heavy hitters that I never got rid of. Now I have a big huge shelf full of games for all sorts of consoles. The worst thing I’ve noticed since the pandemic is handheld prices. Everything from consoles to physical games for 3ds and Ps Vita and even GameBoy have gone absolutely insane.

Outstanding video. Don't agree with some of things you said but thank you so much for such a great video with such an essay of interesting gaming topics. Putting your opinion out to the Internet is bound to be a bloodbath of negativity and criticism but you ll find that a lot more people love it. Thank you for taking the plunge. I am a physical and digital game collector and I see pros and cons in both. Digital has some great things going for it. Having a Steam/Gog/Epic games library means that every time I get a new laptop or take a trip, my game libraries are right there, with no added size/weight, with current game versions and several other features that improve the experience. Physical games are magical objects that activate your memories of great experiences which you can t replicate with digital. All in all, love options, and see great stuff in both. Continue with the great content

1:16:00 “It would be an all digital, passive income, subscription service DSM hellscape all the way down.” Man, send me the bumper-sticker. That’s EXACTLY what they want video games to be. “Biff, why do we sell a disc once for $50 when we could make them pay endlessly to access the digi stream? We could call it ‘games as a service’ and milk the little toads for decades to come!”

It's so weird seeing this from the perspective of an American gamer because across the pond it couldn't be more different. I got the impulse to get a SNES classic so I could mod it, and I took the train to the store and sure enough they had piles of them for sale, basically covered in dust. No one wanted them. As for the PS4s, they did sell quite well over here, but the PS sections in used game stores are always the biggest, most stocked and most varied. People buy the games, beat them as quickly as possible and sell them to used game stores as early as possible for the biggest available payout (you can get around 35€ back on your 60-70€ game if you sell it in the first month it's out, on average). It's practically a meme how many copies of Spiderman and Red Dead 2 you can buy for like 12€ now, they're that prevalent. Xbox though? You're lucky if you're not stuck with Kinect games or french or German copies of games that tourists sell off here for some reason, or children are gifted by family members who live abroad and come to visit. Sad state of affairs for an Xbox player like me.

I have so many PC/Games with Windows titles that probably don't work anymore (as well as "always online" games with no servers), I don't want to think about it. I know it's just part of the hobby now, but I get stressed thinking about It. Of course a level-headed person will say "but you didn't play that game for 15 years, why should it bother you that you can't play it anymore?" Well, it does.

problem with limited run games is well games are limited. once stopped the scrapping begins. same gos got like analog consoles. and if you didn't have the moeny at the time to buy the game your sol. also the investors are most likely game collectors who buy games to wate and sell em later on...this the community problem. things need to be preorder and made in batches or enough copy's for everyone. like low prints of games years from not thow prices will skyrocket...just crates a problem down the road not really addressing the problem.

So, at around 1:13:00 you talk about Nintendo announcing the shutdown of the 3DS store and say they "soft closed" it ahead of time. While that is true, you could still add funds to your Nintendo account through your Switch to buy stuff on the 3DS. In fact, after Sony didn't shut down the PS3 and Vita stores they did the exact same thing. You can only add funds to your PSN account through the online store or through a PS4/PS5. Anyway, nice video.

This is a great video and I hope that it gets enough attention to encourage more like it. You hit on a lot of points that could each be their own videos or even point people in the right direction for doing their own research. The transition from consumers owning games into consumers being granted licenses, the importance of games preservation, the general wastefulness of focusing on a bottom line profits instead of quality, etc. I really appreciated the self awareness you showed throughout as well. The biggest points of disagreement I have are where you're drawing boundaries between what is ethical/acceptable and what is not. Specifically when you are talking brick and mortar video game stores and the hobby in general--in each instance it feels as though you started off with your current stance and worked backwards to justify it instead of scrutinizing it. For brick and mortar video game stores, they are incentivized to stockpile inventory and mark-up prices to stay in business, and this is only going to get worse as we move further away from physical media. As you lay out, more and more the industry is moving towards licenses and games as services. What value will an Xbox One game incomplete on disc have when the servers are no longer available? Or a multiplayer only game that no longer has support? As it becomes common practice the physical versions of these games are going to be nothing more than E-waste that stores cannot sell, and (I worry) they will become reliant on continuously buying and reselling the same old games or otherwise go out of business. If circulation is healthy then maybe it will be sustainable, but if collectors buy up the available copies, the supply will only ever decline and the price will be forced upwards. It isn't as egregious as scalpers, but nevertheless it only makes the hobby harder and harder to get into. Basically, I worry that the industry itself is forcing anyone interested in this hobby to behave "unethically" because we either fight over relics of past, more consumer friendly times or otherwise cede control to them. But just because the industry is forcing us in this direction just not mean that we are free of responsibility for choosing to participate. Similarly towards the end you put video game collecting on a scale against other hobbies and assign a sort of relative morality; sure we do not spend as much money on this hobby as some other people do on their respective hobbies, but (I feel) that does not necessarily make it okay. Sure, the 6-figures that someone else spent on a car or exotic pet could go further, but that does not mean that the hundreds we spend on games wouldn't be consequential in someone's life. I guess what I mean to say is that there is no reason to be critical of other more expensive hobbies just because they are somehow more wasteful. Your arguments have merit without needing to shift responsibility. With finite resources, anything we consume is at the expense of someone else regardless of scale. I hope that this does not come across as too critical, I just really enjoyed the video and think that dialogue on where we, as humans, choose to give ourselves excuses is important to reducing polarization and promoting empathy. I would love to hear your opinions on more, like what you think the landscape of used game stores will look like in, say, 10 years when the industry is more likely to be even further from physical media. I am also interested to know your stance on whether a game needs to be "preserve-able" to have any worth. MMOs, multiplayer-only games, mobile games, etc may seem inherently predatory in the current ecosystem, but generally speaking if the consumer is getting something they want out of the experience, does it matter if the game eventually disappears? The memories and fun along the way aren't lost just because it is no longer accessible.

Very nice Video. Corona was really a huge downer to all these hobbys. I think there is a similarity to tourists. They came to this place with money in theyr pockets, without really knowing the worths and everything, they just want to be a part of it. So some people took advantage and increased the prices. Now the damage is done and the people who live there cant affort anything anymore. I just have to correct you in one point. LRG is not a small Company. Theyre part now of the Embracer Group and they dont only print small games anymore. They worked for Konami and Ubisoft, which definetily have the capacitis to print the games in normal way. Especially because you critisized Nintendo for unnecessary limiting theyr products. What basicly is the whole buiseness model of LRG.

There is so much to unpack here, so let me just say that as one of those evil 'finance guys' you mention in this video, I did enjoy the video. I agree with about 50% of some of your points made in this video and disagree with the rest. I fully acknowledge that video game collecting as a hobby was much better before the days of mass speculation and of course third party grading. If you know my work in the antiques and collectibles trade, I am very cautious about manipulated and unregulated markets. That said, I don't think the speculators will be leaving any time soon unfortunately. Nonetheless, I wanted to leave a comment to hopefully help increase the reach of this video and let viewers make up their own minds on your talking points. I wish you and your channel all the best.

EBAY & perhaps not just the resellers and scalpers. I fondly remember collecting old 8bit cassette game tapes. One day i could buy buy like a dozen tape games for like 5 bucks & then ebay happened & suddenly every tape was like 20+ bucks EACH. Kinda silly remembering that a lot of the games was original 2 bucks budget titles. I obviously stopped collecting tapes. It tried picking up other hobbies like i even got into some fairly modern figurines (action), bought a figurine but wanted to buy a extra copy for spare parts .. but suddenly a month later a 35 bucks figure was suddenly selling for 130 buck from over 80+ different sellers. Could just be a single reseller of cause, but again i dont blame anyone else following suit when the price goes up it just business logic. Games going digital & online does kinda feel like its turned into the worst possible dystopian nightmare we couldnt even dream off back in the day. The greedy microtransactions, price fixation so that 10 year old games still cost full price 50-60 bucks. To end my rant on a positive, going online & digital has mostly fixed availablility issues at least. Because back in my childhood living in a small town in a small country id walk into the local video game store & they would have like 2-3 copies of Bubble Bobble or Gryzor (Contra) & if you didnt buy them instantly they be gone never to return. I dont miss that.

Incredible video, I agree with most of it. Even points I was going to disagree with, you added further context to where I don't disagree anymore. I do disagree on one point though. Gacha games. I don't like them, and have friends who mainly play numerous of them, but some of them are crafted so well when it comes to story, gameplay and graphics (Mihoyo games like Star Rail, Genshin etc). The one big positive I'd give these games are the ease of access. There are people who can barely afford many games at all, so having a quality AAA level experience in a free experience is not necessarily a bad thing (Just everything else with the gacha aspect is).

I'm 59.ive collected many things - guitars, amplifiers, DVDs, Blu Rays to name a few. After thikngs changed for me financially over the passed few years, I had to sell almost all my guitars and amps. I never got the video game collection bug, but I embraced emulation and really enjoyed being able to play my favorite games and many games and systems I never got to okay and not taking up hardly any space by way of my modded OG Xbox and modded Xbox 360. As an anti capitalist and being poor, I had to shed my huge consumerism habits. I can see why game emulation is so popular. The cost and space issues with physical media collecting are just no longer an issue with emulation. I realize game purists say that it's just not the same experience but I have a blast playing my modded Xbox consoles and have access to thousands of games at a fraction of the price and no space issues. Most people cannot afford retro systems or the actual games these days, so emulation remains a fantastic solution for most people.

Also, Playstation announced it was shutting down the PS3 store at the same time as I was starting to sell my physical PS3 games. I wasn't a total asshole about it tho. Any time someone asked me for a discount, i would always accommodate them and I generally listed games for less than most copies in similar condition. But yea, I took a sabbatical and went to Africa for a month on selling a few dozen games, it was wild.

Amazing video, agree with everything you said here. So sick of seeing pokemon investment channels popping up on my feed and "guys you MUST start buying -insert console here- games now!!!" videos. One way I found to help curb the strong feelings of wanting to buy more pokemon related items that I don't need, is to just draw pokemon I like. I've also found myself enjoying decorating my nintendo handhelds with stickers and keycharms! Shame that it's seen more of a "girly" hobby to decorate game consoles and handhelds if it's more than changing the buttons or housing

I wish I could time travel backward a good 5 years... I wish I could get back my old copy of pokemon heart gold because now you gotta pay like 150 bucks for it loose and there's like a 9 out of 10 chance that it's a fake that in the best case scenario will simply not work.

Video Game Collection has gotten gross... But, I also own 230 physical Nintendo Switch games - all of which are likely to see a decent bump in value and price - as soon as the Nintendo Switch 2 is truly announced, and released. My PriceCharting account has a pretty sweet value curve going up-and-up every month. My total collection is well over 1,450+ physical games across NES, SNES, Game Boy, PS1, PS2, GBA, PS3, Gamecube, Wii, Xbox and Xbox 360, Wii U, NDS, 3DS, PS4, PS5, etc.

When the switch 2 is released switch games are gonna drop not go up, that's how it's always been for most consoles, PS1, PS2, PS4, Xbox one, Xbox, Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, ds, psp, Wii u and 3ds are all still cheaply available, even a lot retro stuff is cheap enough

@ you’re only correct when it comes to common games in high supply. Out of print titles and anything on original NSW that suffered from performance and frame rate issues stands to improve, which men’s their value on a versatile system will only increase. But not everyone collects like I do.

It pains me how lucrative the resale market has become, you summed it up best at the beginning of the video when mentioning that it awards only the early adopters while hurting the newcomers as someone who grew up knowing an older sibling who had since moved out.

First of all, I don’t think gaming is that expensive of a hobby. To my mind, collecting fine art, or cars, or having your own horse, or having four kids play in a hockey team as goal keepers, are out of the mid-income people’s reach. Gaming is popular because the majority can afford to have it as a hobby. It sucks that the collector market went to shit, but it will come back down once the generational and cultural shifts happen (both in gaming and in popular culture generally) and there is no more easy money to be made and the hustlers leave because games aren’t worth anything again. Maybe we’ll see this happen slowly during the 2020s if not the next year.

Because of the push for all digital i switched to pc gaming last year. Not gonna be locked into a console ecosystem waiting to get f'ed. Have gotten more free games true Epic, GOG and Amazon Prime than I bought and the only 3 games I bought around release 'full price' cost me a little over 40 euro's via key sellers within the first week off release. Never going back to consoles only. Xbox is dead for me anyway. To many lies. Kept some physical games, sold many. Indie games are better than a lot of so called AAA studio releases. Ganing needs a reset.

19:36 - Okay first of all, THAT'S BS. When factoring in all the platforms released in the eighth generation, there was still a BEVY of legit console exclusives on ALL the platforms as the time. And second... WHAT DOES ANY OF THIS HAVE TO DO WITH GAME COLLECTING?! Between the complaints of console exclusives, which again is BS especially when factoring in both first parties and handhelds at the time, and the manamdarory install complaint, which by the way isn't an Xbox One only issue it is something that is common with the PS4 too, ALL OF THAT are complaints that are more for a different video altogether instead of this one here. It just derails the video when it ends up being irrelevant to the issue of game collecting as a hobby nowadays instead of adding to it overall. It's just unnecessary filler.

Even if you buy the crew on disc, you can't play it. So what is the point of physical? Also publishers delist the games from the store and not from players library, i can still download and play original vice city on steam. Having a physical disc means you can resell it for money, which is what you are against in this video and you are not a collector but a reseller

@@lapielazoolie scalpers are people who control the supply and yeah I agree they suck big time. The person going to yard sales or thrift store searching for games isn't a scalper imo as those games could end up anywhere and not necessarily into the hands of a collector. I think it's a fallacy many people who collect fall into when they believe if nobody ever picked and resold that every game of item would make it to a collector. People who scout for games like that are keeping more in circulation and out of the landfill.
@lapielazoolie

@@strayiggytv Of course, to resell something is to sell something you’ve already acquired after all. Those retro gaming stores relied on past gamers to forego their collections, preferably for the latest & greatest, in order to resell whereas scalpers are scoping out garage & yard sales from parents with recently moved-out children for bargain deals as to earn maximum profit. The price gouging is no different than what’s being done with life essentials, it isn’t just videogames or hobbies for that matter

I was on board with this untiI the talk of piracy. That's one of the major reasons publishers have all this anti-piracy DRM, and online focused shit today, as it either severely hinders, or outright prevents piracy. Instead of pirating big names like Pokemon or Fire Emblem, support smaller games instead, using both your time and money to help find the devs worth supporting now. If more people did that, I feel we'd be in a better place.
@Bargate
@Bargate 16 күн бұрын
A lot of people who pirate games have little to no money to buy games even indies. Besides depending on the game there might not be an indie on the same level of quality as the original. For example I don't think I've seen a indie game in the style in Fire emblem yet that is as good as Fire emblem. Dark Deity and Symphony of War are good but not as good or polished as Fire Emblem. I do agree with your comment but there's plenty of reasons why it's not always possible.
