What a lot of people forget about blu ray movies is that they are also far greater fidelity than streaming services. I keep thinking, what's the point of a 4K 70 inch tv if you're just gonna stream compressed videos on it?

@@RandallStevenson Not a likely event. Not to mention that torrents ensure data integrity. You've just got to make sure the original source is reliable. It doesn't matter where you're copying data from at that point. If the files other users aren't 100% copies of the original, then it won't be allowed as a source. Regardless, it doesn't matter what kind of malware or backdoors are installed if you're gaming on an offline system.

They're selling the convenience of digital games. Instead of swapping cartridges/dvds, you can just boot up the game without getting out of your chair. I find physical media can be cheaper than digital, which is insane. The only exception is nintendo. As games grow bigger, the convenience of digital media shrinks. Its incredibly inconvenient to have to delete and redownload 100 gb 200 gb games, although I think people who value this convenience will just quit games rather than buy physical.

I completely agree with your view on physical vs. digital media. Your library example is spot on. It would be terrible if libraries were treated like digital platforms, where you have to make space for updates, and books could disappear to be replaced by 'new' copies. This opens the door for censorship and could harm how we preserve and access media in the future.

The idea of art I love dying though, really is heartbreaking, and while some people say “just emulate it,” a future where piracy is cracked down upon much heavier isn’t too far from happening imo; companies like money. It reminds me of the Nintendo situation, they refuse to put out tons of beloved games on their current consoles, while raining down lawsuits on people who don’t have hundreds of dollars for retro gaming, really people who just want to experience great games.

If gaming companies were genuine about preservation, they’d give us a free digital copy along with the physical purchase like movies do. Instead they actively encourage digital only with Day 1 patches, shipping broken games, and pushing live service games. In the past, Physical games kept publishers honest bc they knew once they made a game ready to ship, it was they last time they could make any changes to the game so they had to be sure to send consumers a full experience that offered fun and great replayability. Now they take advantage of the fact they can work on the game “on the fly” with constant updates that the game should’ve shipped with.

Grew up in era where physical was the onl;y option for most things but especially games I was lucky to have a blast playing friends with my buddies in the same room, saving money by swapping games while still seeing my friends in person. Most of greatest memories were during theses times and most of my favourite gaming memories are physical games it become a habit that i buy the game and insert the disc in the machine... didnt feel like i own the game if i didnt have physical game... the issue now is even physical games can be just a shortcut for the console to download the game as the data is not on disc/cartridge... sad times as its a sign that companies just want to pretend discs etc never existed. every game i feel i might play again i will buy on physical media and I also started to hack older consoles like my PS3 so i can preserve the games i like and soon as jailbrake comes out i brought PS4 Pro so my OG PS4 could be hacked and just done same on ps5 pro (which probably be my last console) all so my games can be played on my console if i ever want to play them again and also have benefit of having your whole library on the machine without need for disc(the 1 advantage digital has) but without the disadvantage that it can be taken away from you. I would advise anyone yo do the same if they want to keep their own games. .

I prefer physical media but what annoys me is when companies put a rushed glitchy build of the game on Disks and only rely on updates to fix the game rather than making a new batch of physical discs that have the better version of the game. I recently bought the MGS collection for ps4 and had to update it. If the ps4 and ps5 shutdown their stores, I will lose access to that update. If I put that disk in console that doesn't have the update, I'm basically stuck with the inferior rushed version of the game even if it is the physical disk version.

@@DylanSwitzerlandyou just gave the “baby answer”. Every game is patched today. The disk version is more “valuable” sometimes. As some sort of “time machine”. Many games have “cool glitches” that get fixed later. Like Remake 4 and door teleporting. Or Elden Ring and the many “buff-bugs” that allowed for easier 1 shot builds with less set up. Sometimes even the trophy hunting community is involved. With glitches that allow to skip 10+ hour grinds. And technically speaking 99% of the games, not just MGS, are on an “inferior version” on disk. But if you read my comment you’ll realize that disk actually creates “choices” here.

I like to have my stuff physical. But the example of The Crew shows that even with the game on disc, you are not protected from the game being switched off at some point. The subsequent patching of games also leaves a bad aftertaste for me and suggests that I will never have the game in its complete form on disc or card. Especially since the PS4/XOne Era, it no longer makes sense, at least for me, to rely on physical games because the games are very rarely available in their final form on the medium. Even back in the X360/PS3 era, patches came out for some games. Although it's still clear to me to collect for this.

Nice Video! I agree with your points im just not as much of a gamer im a musician so i feel the same with CD's Vinyl and also old Casette Tapes :) i dont care how easy it sounds but i just love the fact that have to actually DO something to play physical media You get your ass up, open the Case, take the CD out, put it in, Press the nice rubber knob on the player, or other gear that looks awesome too (i have the "Denon DN-S1000 CDJ"CD-Player its just EYECANDY) it loads for a 2 seconds than you hear some CD rotation noises and then you can hear the tracks Same as Vinyl, but with vinyl i i like how you have to be a bit more gentle for example with the needle, you also have to clean/take care of the turntable to remove dust, or remove dust from the vinyl with a small brush And when you put the vinyl out the Paper i love the smell, just like the smell of books old or new ones, this certain smell you know what i mean i also like the fact that you have special places in your room for your phisical media, where you always look at the great artworks almost like a little "shrine" to appreciate the art, book, cd, game, what ever-media wich you can share with friends or guests in your house, wich often leads to interesting conversations too, no matter if you agree 100% maaaan, PHYSICAL_ MEDIA_ IS_ THE_ BEST_ !_

I'm 22 and one thing I really hope happens in the future is DRM-Free games and movies. Now movies, tv, games, and music even if you can download them are generally tied to online services and can be taken away at the whim of the owners but if they could just sever that connection media preservation and general buying experience would be way better. Companies like Good Old Games (who also update and preserve old games) who sell PC games and Bandcamp for music have helped a lot, though currently a lot of their content is indie with a minority of bigger rights owners being on board. A benefit of this too would be easier preservation because files are much easier to preserve in the long term than discs and cartridges, since they break down over time while files can be moved to new hardware as the old break down. Though physical media isn't far behind in ease since you can move the music and movies to new blu-rays and cds, except for games which generally have strong protections to keep from copying from my understanding. The thing that really sucks though is convincing companies of this, digital media you only borrow is just so much cheaper on their side and profitable that unless the majority of people outright rejected it it may be hard to stop it. I hope we will live in a future of freedom in owning digital media and a resurgence in quality physical content, there's nothing that compares to being able to display, share, sell, and appreciate physical media; And there's nothing like being able to do what you wish with digital. Libraries are incredible btw, gotta be my favorite part of most cities. It's tragic that the Internet Archive is struggling against big companies, they are like one of the biggest libraries of things of basically all types.

Man this comment was so fun and enlightening to read, I hope that we can live in a future like that as well. The content on those discs and cartridges is still what matters at the end of the day. Modding consoles to allow playing backup copies is the best way to play old games. Jak & Daxter the Precursor Legacy has no gun combat (though the sequels do), so if you want to stick to pure platforming and some melee combat then this would be the better pick. (All 4 Jak & Daxter games are available on ps4/5) I'll throw in a 3rd option though, as it was one of the "big 3" of the PS2 era platofrmers: Sly Cooper And the Theivous Racoonus. As a veteran gamer the late 1980's and the early 2000's games are truely the greatest hits. If you genuinely agree with this video, think about other aspects in life where this matters judt as much if not more. For example: Modern money has slowly went the same path. (Digital). They can "print" money out of thin air and completely wreck an economy by the literal push of a button. The physical equivalent of video games to currency would be Gold and Silver. Its something you can hold, that has held worth for thousands of years, and nobody can just print more of it or remove your access to it like they can with digital money. You dont need internet, electricity, a phone or computer. Its simply a physical item that nibody can tell you what you can or can't do with it. If you want an examply if givernments shutting down people's bank accounts, simply take a look at the Canadian truckers protest during 2022. They shut down multiple people bank accounts and they couldnt access or remove anything from thise accounts until eventually repealed. If they held physical gold or silver they could've simply went to a bullion dealer and traded them in for cash.

Except for the fact that gold is always sold at an insanely inflated price in some extreme cases over 150% of the actual value. This is a great video, I agreed with all of your points. I'm 30, so while I'm not super old comparatively, I can remember so many transitions. Like you said, technology really moves quickly. For me, going from the N64 days, to the PS2, then to the Xbox 360, was such a great time in my life, and physical media was a huge part of that. Digital just doesn't do it for me, I love being able to look at my bookshelf and see all of my games, sitting there ready to be played or just to reminisce about better times. I really hate the all-digital future we seem to be rocketing towards with no end in sight. Even outside of gaming, you can see the problems with streaming services, once they decide that they don't want to carry a show anymore, you're pretty much screwed unless you have a physical copy of the series. As I look around online to try to pick up games and dvds that I had lost over time due to a variety of factors, I noticed just how crazy some of the price increases for physical media are, largely due to these things now being seen as more of a rare commodity as physical media is dying out, and it depresses me. I hope that we can get to a place where physical media can still be prevalent. At one-point, digital copies were the gimmick, and physical copies were the standard, but now, that has completely shifted.

It feels like We’re already in a cyberpunk universe, everything just isn’t draped in neon and tall buildings just yet. I have fond memories of going into EB Games to acquire whatever the next free legendary Pokemon was during events for the Nintendo 3DS, tonnes of other people would always be lingering in & around the stores. I'd often have other teens come up to me asking what games I played & if I had any shiny Pokemon while we waited in line chatting about stuff. I never get that interaction anymore these days. I ended up buying a PS2 with all my old games I used to play as those are what I considered the golden era of gaming. I booted up a game of Ratchet & Clank and was hooked immediately. Just good vibes all around. The same can be said of the CRT TV I'm reunited with. I so dearly miss being at my auntie's; she has many VHS tapes with tonnes of Cartoon Network media on them on the old CRT TV. Im from gen z and I NEVER buy any movies, shows, books, or albums digitally. I’m fine streaming them either for free or with a subscription, but if I buy them straight up, I’m always buying the physical book or cd or Blu-ray/dvd. Games are the only media I purchase digitally, and even then it’s only when they’re on deep discounts/cheaper than physical or are digital only. Physical media is also just a better experience. Like you said, waiting in line for the next COD or GTA is an experience you just can’t get with digital media.

FACTS, I’m Gen Z too, I’m just an early Gen Z though, but I get you fr. I’m always buying physicals if I can. Digital only if it’s something I don’t really care for or it’s something hella CHEAP.

Im 24 and I grew up with the ps1, ps2, ps3, psp, and ps4. I never got the ps5 because of all the digital games. I still play all these older consoles. The ps3 being what I play the most. All discs. My collection is small compared to what I had as a kid. But I love going to game stores and finding games that are nostalgic or that I never got to experience. I will always fight for disc gaming. I love to see my collection in person. It feels good that I've collected this much and it's tangible.

@@gregthatcher919 right now, I’d say Infamous 1&2, twisted metal, god of war, spider man shattered dimensions, prototype 2, Uncharted 3, and add FL0W on that list too. More than 5 but that’s what I’d say. Best console gen of all time imo, I know most say PS2 is the GOAT and in some ways it’s true, it’s game library is better than ps3, but ps3 comes close too, lots of good games. Just picking up one game and going through a good story is just not something you can do now with all this digital bs. Graphics for ps3 will hold up till the end of time imo, so I think that makes up for the slight shortcoming on the selection of overall games. What about you, what’s on your list? Crazy how many people like us and our age group are silently doing the same things

Wow, wait so you were born in 2000, even YOU get it! I’m so happy that you have your own physical collection too, like I have a few PS3 games, but I am on the hunt for more and more and more. Something about the PS store from 2009 hits SO DIFFERENT.

@ironorhan fully agree on the people our age doing the same thing silently, I had that feeling which is what made me ask lol. You have good taste, infamous 1&2 are great, I love og red dead (on a playthrough currently), portal 2, i dont really love cod but id add glory days BO1 here. Whenever I have friends over I have them either playing that Tokyo subway suffers kinda game with the move controller, forget the name. Or the tony hawk on the skateboard.

Awesome vid Id just like to add that I saw some comments concerned about newer physical media being unplayable without the Internet because of day one patches. Id like to ease some minds thankfully its nowhere near as bad as what most people think those day 1 patches are optional and not necessary for the disc to function there is no vitual handshake or server check in required its all done on the local hardware level. You can reset your ps4 or 5 to factory settings and never connect it to the Internet and your game discs will still function perfectly. I think people assume because when you put the disc in and you automatically see a download bar that the disc is just a key that checks in with a server to verify you own it and then it downloads a copy for you off the psn but thats not actually whats happening. When you put your disc in it begins copying the game off the disc to your hard drive modern games are very big and complex so they can't run off the disc like the old days so it installs the copy of the game from the disc and runs it off your hard drive. However that copy of the game will always be yours as long as you have the disc so its still ownership. The reason your games start downloading updates immediately when you pop them in is because the company assumes you want you want to play the latest version of the game. They are optional however disconnect your console from the Internet and you can skip the updates and just play what's on the disc . Thats what I do personally because it saves on hard drive space and its faster to install. Plus certain games like elden ring tie your save files to the latest version of the game so if you ever need to make space on your system and delete elden ring and years later come back and can no longer get that update your save file that you put hundreds of hours in will no longer function. Which is why I just play the 1.0 build thats on the disc because I know I will always have access to that version and my save because of that. Most games are perfectly fun and playable without patches this is speaking from personal experience. I dont know why everyone assumes its like the cyberpunk situation with every game couldn't be further from the truth I assure you so the future isn't as doom and gloom as people might think. I know they're are a handful of cases where it does need the Internet like some of the call of dutys and star wars outlaws but they are the exception and not the rule.

@BoniMayne Not keys data discs that hold a full 1.00 build of the game it installs the data it doesn't download it. The only thing downloaded are dlc and quality of life improvements if your connected to the Internet. I have a spare PS4 that I never connected to the Internet and you can absolutely play off of nothing but the disc itself no Internet necessary.

It’s really important to understand how these games actually work, thanks for shedding some light on it, I’m seeing a lot of those comments as well and I was like wait no, you can actually go back and play the 1.0 version of cyberpunk 2077 (the horrible build) it’s still there haha, thank you so much for leaving this comment, I love long comments like this. @@DylanSwitzerland No problem glad you liked the explanation. And yes I believe there is a 1.0 build of bloodborn on disc pretty sure all the souls games do. There's actually a game of the year edition of bloodborn which has all patches and dlc on disc so I'd recommended getting that if it's a game you love.

Actually HD was the better technology but Blu Rays promised 1 terabyte discs in the future that unfortunately never made it to production. Also Sony had more influence in the physical distribution market and forced the competition to bow out. Remember Sony is a tech company before it is a media company

I think esp for movies its important because even with the best home internet.. if you care about quality the only consistent experience is to have the data in your own player. I have pretty reliable, wired, 400mbps internet... but amazon prime still cant deliver the UHD streaming that I paid for. Games of course are important.. but we havent seen as regularly, for legitimately big games, games being removed. .. just cause game streaming services isnt yet as big as movies have gotten... but as PS & Xbox streaming gets better... that will also join the issue of quality and ping time... while continuing the danger of things going away.
@HUYI1

It's not about that, these streaming services are trying to kill physical media so people can rely on it, it's disposable to them and they like it this way, I hope there are places where anything that has been locked on streaming services only can be preserved so they are watchable in the future!

A few things of note: 1) Physical media isnt necessarily forever. It is still dependent on how often its reprinted, and the media you own is still subject to degredation. Its why you should back up your physical media. 2) Half the reason why gaming has pushed towards a digital-only future is because publishers dont want people to keep renting older games. A lot of these anti-preservation practices are done in order to push sales for the current slop, which is just ridiculous in my opinion. Like, we don't see anything like this in the music or film industry. The closest analogy is with TV series and their insanely priced boxed sets. Something like the complete series of The Walking Dead on Blu-ray is 130 dollars for example. 3) To make things worse in regards to "digital deluxe" releases, you often don't even actually own that software. Like, if you buy a game on GOG, its yours to do with what you will, but if you buy a game on Steam, you're only buying a license to use that software. Though from what I understand: not all games on Steam have DRM, so you could just copy the game files and run it independently (which is functionally like buying and owning the game). Overall, there just needs to be a normalization of emulation since we can't rely on companies to re-release shit that they don't want to support anymore.

25 year old big LBP fan, (NewEra_Jessy in case anyone remembers running into me back in the day,) and I fully agree with you. This is one of the biggest reasons my partner and I collect games and are so passionate about data hoarding. If not, our kid may never experience some of the biggest names of gaming history. She loves LBP, and I’m so glad I was able to give her that. Speaking of LBP, Project Lighthouse is neat and definitely worth the time to get set up on a modded PS3. I’ve not played with anyone on it yet, but it’s so nostalgic to go play those old levels and find those old objects I loved (especially the Sleepyhead music box) on actual hardware with a CRT. 😊
