I have one you can add in the second part. Skullgirls has an Anti-Piracy System that would give the player the Error message "What is the Square Root of a Fish? Now I'm Sad ;(" Someone even asked the developers what it means and they said "It means you have to buy the game."

Earthbound had a nasty little surprise for pirated copies, too. Not only would it spawn a ridiculous amount of enemies, but after defeating the first phase of the final boss, the game will reset and all saves deleted.

You missed the best one: "Game dev tycoon", a game about making video games. They released a pirate copy of their game, except with a small twist. If you played the pirate version, then at some point you will start loosing more and more money due to piracy until you loose completely. It was funny how players complained on forums about "how to deal with those nasty pirates".

@@shadowknight1990o Because Piracy doesn't actually affect developers for the mostpart. If someone is pirating a game, chances are, they weren't going to pay anyways, and it's usually better off to let them spread word of mouth about how good the game is, and have people that want to buy it, buy it. It's why developers like Hakita (The developer behind Ultrakill) just doesn't care, and outright encourages it if you're too poor to buy the game, stating "Culture shouldn't exist only for those who can afford it." Piracy is an inevitability for any piece of software, it's down to developers how they deal with it, but, it's not as much of a loss as they think it is, sometimes it works out in their favor, turning someone that wouldn'tve paid either way, into a paying customer. I mean, hell, I pirated Ultrakill and ended up liking it so much I bought it, just so I could have it be up to date. And, yes, I know I used the same game as an example, but, that's just because funny robot boomer shooter is good.

Clearly you have never heard of a certain developer known as pirate software who managed to solve piracy of his game by simply adjusting the price by region.

They made it an actual option in legal copies called Pirate Mode. You get a copy protection option to build into your engine, but the consequences are that your games will be pirated and anger your fans, and you'll lose money faster than you can keep up. Hope you have a money generator from the Steam Workshop to fight the problem.m

Changing your internal clock in animal crossing for better prices and things like that is still possible and done very often. There isn't much in the way of punishment for doing so. If you have turnips and you're time traveling to get better sell prices you can only go forward that week if you go into the next week or you travel backwards in time the turnips will go rotten. Honestly though just joining a few Animal Crossing groups makes it a lot less needed to do this as visiting other islands online you can sell turnips at their price, ask neighbors on their island to move onto yours if they are already moving off the other person's island, and chances are anything you want/need will be given to you by another player who's been playing for so long they have nothing left to do in the game.

Got a story of my own. I was playing the Elder Scrolls Online with a friend, (who I didn't know fully, as we were online friends). We were fighting a really tough dragon priest (I can't pronounce or spell his name 😭), and my friend decided to drop a bombshell on my head by mentioning he had made a custom cheat he had implemented into his gameplay that allowed him to insta heal all his hit points with one potion ni matter what it was. Well... I guess a admin or someone heard that, as the day after, he friend was complaining that his cheat wasn't working, what's more, none of his health potions, spells, or any healing items worked. He was been banned for a few months now. And I have no sympathy.

I played Sims 4 once, making a family out of the original FNAF crew: Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, Foxy, and Golden Freddy. I made humanoid versions of the characters. And I played that household as normal, wanting them to build up their friendships with each other and such. Yet something was weird with Golden Freddy who I named Tommy as that was my headcanon in the past. Tommy would teleport randomly around the house and property. Like WHAT? No other sims done that. No explanation he'd be be teleporting around, yet acting normal. It freaked me out. I made the family because I was a fan of FNAF. I didn't expect for some FNAF shit to happen in Sims 4! And I had a legal copy of the game, designed the characters from snatch. No downloading anything. No special powers. Yet Tommy seemed to embody Golden Freddy! And yes, I know this is a shitty retelling of the story. I had posted a better version of this story on the Sims 4 forums because I was so surprised by it and wanted to tell the other simmers about it. So if you want to know more about it, you gonna go find the post I made on the Sims 4 forums about it.

I totally understand punishing online cheaters as they ruin the game experience for everyone else. But why punish cheaters in solo game ? They don't ruin anyone experience and just wanna fuck around and try some dumb sh!t in the game more than just complete it easily. Let them be, it doesn't affect you in any way. Hell, you could even go the Doom Eternal route, which includes the possibility to use cheat if : 1) You first find the secret/cheat by exploring the map 2) You have already completed the level legitimately once

The solo game ones were either harsh on the people who pirated the game or a funny gag. The only one that I think went too far was the one that would delete your game for using too many of the in-game cheats.

@@charlesjohnson3625 Funny gags like Lara Croft exploding or the detective in his underpants, I can tolerate, it's good sport and doesn't really impact the game as a whole. Making the game completely unplayable by removing access to necessary abilities or deleting entire save files... well, let's say that if you add those as a devs of a strictly singleplayer game, you're worse than the cheaters you pretend to have a moral highground over.

i think the superman one went too far, in that you are literally REQUIRED to use a cheat code to get one of ghe achievments, but then it disabled all the other ones. like, that's not stealing the game and it's nkt a multiplayer game. they deliberately designed that in there, rewuiring players to attempt to cheat andnthen punishing them for doing the thing that you demanded them to do? why put a cheat menu and design cheat codes for it only to punish players for using it? same with the banjo kazooie, they put a special room in the game specifically for entering cheat codes and then just flat out delete your memory card for using it? wtf. deleting progress is the worst thing you can do to a player. The makers of Eternal Darkness Sanity Reauiem on gamecube knew this as one of the "scary hallucinations" the character suffers in game is a breaking of the 4th wall as the game opens your memory card and deletes all your saves, but that one is fun because it doesn't really delete your saves, it's just a hallucination to make you scared and that's literally the one thing that would legit "scare" a gamer

@SolarDevs5 I have two self-imposed rules for when I cheat ingames : 1) Only and strictly in single player games. NEVER in PvP nor online co-op PvE. 2) I have to have finsihed THE ENTIRE GAME at least once legitimately. Then, I think I deserve to be able to cheat. And again, when I cheat ingames, it's not to easily win, it's to fuck around, try to some weird/specific stuff and explore out-of-bound areas.

As someone who wants to become a game dev. Punishing piracy by completely ruining the experience is something I would never do. At most I would have it just be some visual thing or a new line of dialog, but not something as drastic as removing all damage or something. I don't want to punish someone for wanting to play my games but not having the money to pay for the game. Like the great game developer Hakita once said: "Culture shouldn't exist only for those who can afford it"

Now this brings back memories. My first encounter with Devs having some fun with the gamer wasn't so much a cheat code issue but a DRM one. Starflight the 80's pc game. The game came with a security code wheel. When you first boot up the game it'll ask you to line up the code wheel and to type in the answer. If you lined the card up wrong and put the wrong answer in, you still were able to go into the game and begin playing. That is until the interstel police ships gave a call and you would be arrested. These ships are unbeatable.

There are a few game*books* that punish readers for cheating. They're called cheater traps, which usually come in the form of asking for a nonexistent item and then giving the reader a bad ending if they lie and claim to have it.

The Fighting Fantasy series "Steve Jackson's Sorcery" is well known for this. It's a '"chose your own adventure" type that hurts your character or kills them if you claim to have things that you couldn't possibly have at that point.

Operation Flashpoint from 2001 had a similar thing as ARMA. Pirated copies would slowly decrease the power of the bullets until they literally did no damage at all. Of course the pirates would post on forums asking why their guns didn't work

An old game had something similar to Witcher 3 cows, albeit more easier to be honest. I am talking about a game called Sacred. In this game the players doesn't only have the classic option to save their game, but they can also export their character(s) into seperate files from their save game files. So, when you first start your adventure, you can collect some items from your surrounding environment and then EXPORT your character without saving your game ( and to be truthful, you don't have to save because you are at the very very beginning). Start over and those items will respawn, repeat the process as much as you need and you will have gold and at least one magic skill or spell high enough level for a level 1 character. XD I figured this out when i first started playing the game Sacred, i don't know if it was a bug, a glitch or hole in the programming of the game, but i used the heck out of it. XD

Problem with the "fixes" like in spyro is that sometimes if you have a scratch in the right place, the pirate protection activates, even on legitimately purchased brand new copies of the game.

Don’t know if this has ever happened to anyone, but Command & Conquer Red Alert: Retaliation for the PS2 had some weird, dark rainbow cloud appear during skirmish matches if you put in too many cheats. It roamed the whole map randomly, had the power of the infinite Tesla coils, and destroyed everything in its path.

(also, EA stopped caring about cheaters and started caring about putting out hundreds of added paid content for that game anyways... cause money...)

The base Sims 4 game is free-to-play now, and goodness knows they make enough cash off the many DLCs, so there's not really any point to pirating the base game. I do wonder if there are any anti-piracy measures integrated into the DLCs.

I recall having a copy of Command and conquer red alert retaliation on the ps1. It did have cheats, and if you put in too many, the game would spawn a black cloud that would shoot lightning at your units and buildings. It was untargetable and invincible, and could destroy your stuff pretty easily.

I remember that using the DOOM codes in Heretic would actually have the opposite effect. IDDQD for instance would take you down to one health, IDKFA takes away all weapons etc.

Most of the companies punish cheaters, but not Blizzard...i guess. 🙄🙄Overwatch 2 is filled to the brim with cheaters. Heck, even their so called "anti-cheat" system has taken a long lasting vacation. People, use cheats on SINGLE-PLAYER GAMES. Leave online play free of cheats and hacks. I admit it, i use cheats too. I have been using cheats for the past 20 or so years, but only on single-player games like GTA Vice City, GTA San Andreas, Quantum Break and so on and so forth. Never on online games or in games that have any kind of multiplayer gameplay.

I have a legal copy of Spyro the Dragon 3, yet there were at least several times that the game crashed on me at some point. I would be just playing the game normally when it suddenly freezes, forcing me to reset. Thank goodness for both the autosave function and that I have a memory card. Although it still annoys me when the game crashes, it's not too much of a big deal since I'll either just restart the level I was in or just have to recollect any treasure or eggs I came across after exiting a level.

@@j.p.6932 exploiting unintended game weaknesses gives you an advantages over the other players. Most (online) games have this as clause in their eula's. Some devs also dont care if its more like a "funny" glitch.

For the Spyro one. It was either me or my cousin who bought a game from the game store. At that time, we thought it was defected. Never knew the game store sold pirated games. One such moment occurred. During the final battle against the Sorceress, just one flame or hit from the Sorceress, Spyro nope his way out of there and we ended up back at the very first hub world which the rocket overlaid with the hot air balloon, progress completely lost. Edit: As for Heretic, the IDDQD and IDKFA cheats are for trolling. The actual cheats would be rambo (for all weapons) and quicken (for God Mode).

It is because the base game is so terrible you need to spend so much just for the game to be kinda equal to The Sims 2 almost every kind of thing you would want to do is tied to some DLC sometimes multiple

I was a child when the Total War franchise was really starting to take off with Rome Total War and Medieval 2 Total War. At some point, I discovered the RomeShell and MedievalShell cheating system, which allows you to breeze through your campaigns no problem. Unfortunately, I remember a couple of campaigns where I *tried* to enter a cheat which causes an opposing faction to instantly be destroyed, with all their armies and settlements becoming Rebels, and that happen to *my* faction instead.

Game Dev Tycoon is the definition of karma. Pirate that game, and your games within a game will be mercilessly pirated by NPCs.

Turok 2 has different endings depending on whether you used cheat codes or not. With cheats, 'e's just restin'. Without cheat codes, he's dead. Battletoads Doubledragon does something similar. If you defeat the final boss with the cheat code, Mr Owl shows up and denies you the satisfaction of beating the game and tells you to try again...but without cheats codes.

I hate hackers, they're cheaters too. I'm a shiny hunter in Pokemon, and if you know anything about the Pokemon company, if they find you have hacked Pokemon in Pokemon home you could lose your entire account. After all the countless months and years working to collect 800 shiny Pokemon, the fact that a single hacked pokemon could destroy it all infuriates me! So I can't trade Pokemon to get the ones I need.

Don't call them "hackers". It sounds way too cool for what they're doing. They're just using a download program that runs scripts, they're "script kiddies".

"Hacker" nowadays is almost airways used as a name for cheat makers, "script kiddies," and similar uses. Gone is the original, more positive meaning... 😟

I can't trade for another reason. I ain't paying shit to use the WiFi service when I already am paying to use my own internet. I hate that they did that, when back in the 3DS and prior years, you didn't have to pay for a service that you are already most likely paying for in your home. I'd go on a rant about it, but I'll leave it at that. :/

I've seen on other videos the game Game Dev Tycoon included a hilarious punishment for pirates. In the cracked version of the game, the games that the pirates create get pirated and causing the pirates' in-game company to lose money.

I remember when I was 12, I would go on my mother's computer for certain cheats for certain games before i play them because I thought it would make me a better player. A few months later I realized that I didn't beat the games, the cheat codes did. So I trashed the notes of cheat codes and restarted the games from scratch in hope of becoming a better gamer without cheating. I now take notes on how to get certain items and what skills to learn in combos to memorize them.

@@TheDudeThing It's not cheating if you're restarting your games, taking notes on a notebook that doesn't involve cheat codes that give you infinite everything. I look up stuff like weapons and skills that fit my style in gaming and how to obtain them. That's what i was trying to say. It's like taking notes at what your teachers say or writing words from a book at the library.
