I have a 1950s home in Florida, my roof is black but I have a new Energy efficient AC system and my summer electric bill hovers right at $200. I also keep my house at 73 degrees inside. No trees shading the home either.

My neighbor did that a couple of years ago and his roof shingles look like they are curling up. I actually just noticed it the other day.

@@cfaz6763 It needs to be prepped well for the white elastomeric paint to work. Lots of people either don't properly prepare the surface first. I.e. your neighbor maybe had some old shingles or pre-existing damaged and he just decided to coat over it, which is not recommended.

@komoru oh wow I forgot about this! He sold the house right after, it's been flipped, new roof and now up for sale for 310k I think. Was 100% a s.hole lol

I KEEP telling the kids, WEAR WHITE when it's hot outside, STAY AWAY FROM BLACK CLOTHES in the summer heat! But they don't listen. I shouldn't be surprised that this works for roof color, and probably house color too.

Did you do it? Sadly there's no free lunch. White metal roofs last much longer because they stay cooler, but could cause mold/rot in the roof deck and rafters. black roofs heat up that the wood underneath has a chance to dry out

There is only a 10 degree max difference on black vs white, if they switched to proper ventilation, that is the only difference they are seeing. The shingles are all an oil based product and all have dark under tones, plus the heat must soak through the decking, which has some R-value, then heat the attic air, to in turn soak through the attic insulation, to heat the ceiling, if vented properly the attic air is exchanged 6 times per hour, with the hot air being at the roof line, and the cooler down by the insulation. At that exchange rate the attic is 3-4 degrees warmer with The blackest colored roof, at the very MAX, (most blacks have a lot of grey). If you have insulation in the ceiling, you will never see any significant difference. If you disagree, I can prove it with an infrared thermometer.

its more than 10 degrees difference on shingles in direct sun, citrus county Florida..I checked my dark brown shingles ..in direct sun at 2pm it was 81 degrees outside...the shingles were at 150 degrees...I checked a spot right beside that spot, that i had put one coat of white roofing paint, the day before...it was 118 degrees, thats 32 degrees cooler, with just one coat of paint....it made a big difference in the inside on hot days...so much cooler in the attic....1500 sq ft house cost me $620. for 40 gallons... 2 coats Lanco roof coating White

@@josephfitch1 The difference is you COATED the ENTIRE shingle with paint, a white GRANULED shingle has many dark speckles over it.

@@josephfitch1 Last year we took off my dad’s light green roof and installed a BLACK one. WE BLOCKED off the gable end vents, and added a Lomanco non-filtered ridge vent for proper ventilation. His attic temps dropped over 25 degrees. With proper ventilation, the entire attic space air should be exchanged 10 times EVERY hour. But then again it is estimated that over 90% of houses are done improperly. 1. Lower ridge vents become intake, 2. No baffles with cross wind turn the system up side down. 3. Box vents on multiple sides of the roof. 4. Multiple types of vent make air mixture, inefficient movement, and intake from the wrong places.

It's a well known fact that white colors reflect most of the sunlight while dark, black colors absorb sunlight almost completely. People in the desert paint their roofs white colors for that specific reason.
