Jeff, your tip about writing the question down really helped me in my recent behavioral interviews (for a SWE role, with two behavioral rounds). Even though I usually take many notes during an interview, I somehow never wrote down the question in previous interviews, being too focused on maintaining eye contact and the same level of attention. However, once I did this in my recent interview, I found it really helpful in focusing on the words, repeating them mentally in my head, and having a moment to glance over my notes / think about it. This helped me re-gain focus - during other interviews, sometimes I just blanked out, but in this case, I was able to reorient myself by asking for a quick moment to think and taking another glance at my words and notes (which my interviewers were entirely okay with). The team gave me a lot of positive feedback, and I think I'll be accepting their offer, which I'm really excited about. Thank you for creating all this helpful content!

@jeffhsipepi
@jeffhsipepi 3 ай бұрын
@gloration972, on a piece of paper in front of your keyboard. So when you look down and you are taking notes, it looks like you are only taking notes, not referencing your sheet. I prefer this method over having the info on a second screen.

Bravo on the Screen Setup! It occurs to me--perhaps obvious to everyone here,--but when you're asked a 'WHAT do you you think about...', etc, question, the Interviewer is giving you permission to break the eye to eye contact and WONDER. And when people WONDER, they naturally tend to think/LOOK out in space--they look away to some blank slate in space...and they imagine! And THAT is the exact moment that the BLANK SLATE they're staring at [with permission] is...their Cheat Sheet, full of their REAL LIFE best answers. So, if I'm the dunce in the class and you're other followers are all thinking, "well, duh...everyone KNEW that!" then so be it. Anyway, in my humble opinion, JOB WELL DONE!

Lol, the whole looking down to take notes thing is spoken like a guy whose thinning hair does not give his age away! For older workers who want to be authentic in their dealings, highlighting a point of potential objection or an obvious feature against which others unconsciously discriminate seems risky... great technique for the phone but you leave me scratching a thinning head when considering best approach on video. Writing question down is HUGE help. There are parts of your approach to this work that have me thinking your RIASEC TEST high scores were R, I, AND C? Your level of focus in your work and your approach suggests you are a detail oriented neurotypical. One of the hottest you tube search terms nowadays is ADHD yet there is very little work search content focused on those of us who have it! Thank you for what's here! Newly subscribed and pouring through your content!

@oldschoolcars3318, it is important to remember that when you ask for a minute to gather your thoughts, and you are staring down at your cheat sheet and coming up with a plan, that your interviewer is not staring at you, they are checking their email, the sports score, the weather, etc. The reason for having the cheat sheet down below is to reference it while you are note taking and coming up with your answer strategy. I hope this feedback helps!

@Aotterete, keep your cheat sheet and a blank piece of paper right on the desk/table in front of you. When the interviewer asks you the question, write it down and restate it and then tell them you are going to take a minute to gather your thoughts. Look down and take a couple of notes and reference your cheat sheet at this time.

Hi Jeff, this might sound like a basic thing but how can I split my screen so that the camera is in the middle? My interview is on Zoom. I'd love to have notes on either side of the camera if possible rather than a timer on one side - thanks
@jeffhsipepi
@jeffhsipepi 2 жыл бұрын
Ciaran, I recommend both! Have notes on one side and a timer on the other and the zoom set up in the middle. If you do have notes up, minimal notes! These should just be a few reminders, down below the screen should be the more in depth notes!

nobody writes down questions on a live interview conference. I don’t get it
@jeffhsipepi
@jeffhsipepi 3 ай бұрын
@camaleon18, I agree that most people do not write down interview questions during the interview. I will also tell you that 99% of candidates in a full slate of interviews (3-5) will answer the wrong question or have a slightly incorrect interpretation of the question. And this is a huge challenge because answering the right question is critical. So, in 100% of cases, I recommend writing down the question that is asked of you. In addition, all candidates should not only write down the question, they should also restate to confirm they heard it correctly. Anyone who does not take these steps in an interview is taking unnecessary risks in my opinion.

Jeff, Thanks so very much for this video. I have been getting a lot out of the content on your channel. I have two questions: do you have any video on best practices/tips during a video group interview (with one's competitors, not an internal panel)? I was recently subjected to this situation and found it very difficult. And second: what is CFAS?
@jeffhsipepi
@jeffhsipepi 2 жыл бұрын
Kaz, panel interviews are always tough whether on video or in person because you are adapting to multiple personalities at once, was this your situation? If so, it is best to focus on one person at a time, please let me know if that answered the question. CFAS stands for Clarify, Framework, Assumptions, Solution and this is the methodology you should follow to answer open-ended/hypothetical questions.
@kazadams
@kazadams 2 жыл бұрын
@@jeffhsipepi my situation was two HR personnel from the company, myself, and 10 others who were also vying for the same position all on the same zoom interview. It was very distracting and I got discouraged! I have never been in this situation before. Absolutely open to any suggestions, tips, videos you have to help shed light on best practices would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for the answer to the second part of my question.
@jeffhsipepi
@jeffhsipepi 2 жыл бұрын
@@kazadams this is really unprofessional of the company, you candidacy should be confidential and being on zoom with other candidates at the same time breaks a lot of candidate privacy rules that the company should have established. If you find yourself in this situation again, decline to work for this team/company.

I assumed the candidate MUST NOT have any notes or cheat sheets and must stay focused on the interview. If one is fully prepared, do we really need notes? "Why Google" and such questions are so easy to answer, right!
@jeffhsipepi
@jeffhsipepi 2 жыл бұрын
Anand, I sincerely appreciate your comment. The virtual interview world had put candidates at a disadvantage. So the notes are to make up for that disadvantage of not being able to share physical space with your interviewer, not being able to use a whiteboard, etc. The notes should be extremely high level and only used to jog someone's memory. And lastly, remember some questions are easy, but the pressure of the moment can make even the smartest and most articulate people go blank. The cheat sheet is basically there to remind people of the simple things.

Divya MN, because pretty much 100% of the time not writing down questions will lead to you slightly changing the question and in many instances answering the wrong question. I did a video on this subject - kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqDXZ6mtf6mZmJo. But try it out, do a practice interview with someone, answer 10 questions, write down five and don't write down the other five, I think you will see the difference. I hope this helps!
