I like how they presented the opera. "Kein Schnickschnack", just singing and great natural stage presence but also not boring. It has a magnetic attraction because the singers have so much energy.

Yeah AMAZING Wolfram. Who was this Vöge? Anybody ever heard of him? Some credits say Gerhard and some say Georg, but either way I can't quite tell if he was an actor with somebody else's voice or if he was a singer. Does anybody know? Hard to imagine that somebody who would today be more or less the best baritone in the world left practically no trace at the time....

@@goscinnydyrygent I found the name as Gerhard Vögler, in a post about the movie Der Brand in der Oper from 1930.

Huge with tons of squillo.

Ah, the power of great squillo in all of these singers is phenomenally breathtaking. Hendrik Appels stood his ground as a wonderful Tannhäuser and he sang with clarion clarity.

Are you sure it's live? It seems there's a girl appearing at 1:30 being told to leave by an external character, and then right at the end she smiles at Tannhauser. To me that seems to suggest that she's a character in a movie.

It is probably from a movie: Brand in der Oper from 1930.
@Garwfechan-ry5lk7 ай бұрын
This was a Time when the Heldentenor was a Heldentenor, Appels sang in nearly all the Major Houses in Europe not only in Wagner, he was a fine Florestan and Manrico, he made a few appearances at Covent Garden with success, I believe he was Dutch and he Certainly had very good diction as well, essential in Tannhauser a very difficult role as written by Wagner. Where you found this Film I have no idea, it is marvellous, the Stage is it the Kroll or the State Opera ?

Thanks for you comment. The clips were recorded for the movie Brand in der Oper by Carl Froehlich. The performance was shot at Theater am Nollendorfplatz.

Where did you find all this information? He is family, I think a great great uncle or something like that. But I had not even heard about him before someone sent me a You Tube recording asking if he was family! He was Dutch and there is some information in Dutch about him.

This is absolutely fantastic, a total gem - but playing a half-step sharp, like so many old movie clips. I don't know whether that means they typically played them that way in movie theaters at the time (doubt it; musicians would have complained), or that the copies in circulation are mostly derived from some sped-up replay on television, or what....but does anybody who follows these posts know the right software recommendations for slowing the video? It is easy to slow the audio by the desired increment, and if the video is then slowed by that exact increment, it should remain "in sync" but show the actual speed with which they moved (and the actual timbre of the voices).

Thanks, it's an issue caused by different frame rates. It can be fixed with most editing programs.
