I'm fascinated with his voice ! He's a true Wagnerian heldentenor with an impeccable technique, amazing projection and by far a more beautiful tone than Melchior. I prefer his contemporary Franz Völker in the Lohengrin excerpts for his unmatched vulnerability and lyricism in the role ...I'm so excited to hear this GREAT artist for the first time !!!! Thank you so much!

Appels is incredible here. To the comparisons with Melchior, Appels has obviously studied Melchior's singing and imitated it at times (who wouldn't want to sing like Melchior?). Here I am purely talking about vocal technique. As an artist Appels stands proudly, and to my ears his Canio is better than Melchior's. I feel he is more Italianate in style and more impassioned
@Garwfechan-ry5lk4 ай бұрын
He was no Melchior, you would have to listen to a Full opera to Compare , Appels did sing alongside Melchior a number of times in London Paris and Berlin , Melchior was supreme.

There are no such voices any more because there are no vocal teachers to teach such technique. And it starts with proper music education in public elementary schools. Young people want to be IT workers and sing heavy metal.

comme d'habitude, les grands chanteurs d'autrefois ridiculisent les "demis-portions" d'aujourd'hui... Non seulement par le timbre, mais par l'expression artistique elle-même.

Excellent voice in the old style. New name for me so thanks. I think audiences today would find the penetrating sqillo a rather unusual experience. Does anyone sing with this type of production today? Certainly sound engineers would have a few problems. Personally I prefer a slightly more covered approach in the passaggio, a la Melchior.

Melchiors’ voice is rather “Horizontal” compared to him. Very open though, to my taste darker and much more appealing than Melchior. Greetings
@ransomcoates546 Жыл бұрын
@@tecnicaantica Melchior’s mouth position was markedly horizontal, which the vertical dogmatists ignore.
@langleytw Жыл бұрын
@@tecnicaantica I guess that is why we all have our own preferences. Myself, I cannot hear anything but vertical in Melchior's voice. He dominates the passagio and never opens the vowels in the middle voices. His singing is super-legato where required or clipped to suit the style. He had a relatively small mouth and what he may have done physically has little bearing on the sound, though I do not think he spread his mouth unduly. Here is an example I'm sure you have heard: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJK5mZ5vqd58hZY Compared to many whose careers are associated with the role of Otello, Melchior sounds un troubled. Perhaps too clinical for some but that's personal preference. I like the way he allows the composer to provide the histrionics. And lets not forget that the only reason he did not sing these roles was because the Italian side of the house (Met) were concerned that he'd wipe the floor with them and so Bing would not allow it.

@@ransomcoates546 Please see my response.
@ransomcoates546 Жыл бұрын
@@langleytw A good example of the physical mouth position I note is in the film where he sings the ‘Preislied’ and bows at the end. I mention it only because teachers seem to be promoting a practically disjointed jaw position, which Corelli adopted towards the end of his career. It encourages forcing, I think.

Melchior had an unusual vocal finesse and discipline at the peak of his career for such a big voice. He never bawled or shouted. He was particularly restrained in the passaggio. This is what set him apart from other heldentenors, in my opinion. Appels certainly has a beautiful authentic heldentenor voice of the type we may not hear again.
@luissanchezroma10103 жыл бұрын
