The crew finds out when a trackside detector tells them about it. Trackside detectors are located here and there but not densely. They also check for wide load, high impact wheel, etc. Sometimes the crew will miss the report and then the dispatcher will tell them about it and require that they stop and investigate. Almost always it's urgent enough to stop and drop the faulty car off at a siding by policy but not urgent urgent.

Well in this case, from what I'm hearing, the hot box detector picked up that locked axle. Something like that has to be set out. No question. The two places where they could of dropped that car off was either in Leetonia or Columbiana (CP Lum) depending on what track they were on. The Chief Dispatcher told them to keep going. If that's the case, that person will be held responsible. But we'll have to see what the NTSB finds when the full report comes out

This all originates with one person...Hunter Harrison. He's the one who came up with PSR, and that is why NS and all the other Class 1 railroads have been doing the last five years. Basically slash costs to make quick profits from an industry that was built for the long term. Unfortunately Hunter died while running CSX into the ground. The rail unions were striking in November/December over something called PSR. PSR is Precision Scheduled Railroading it means fewer crews, less maintanance, fewer days off, longer trains, and just general unsafe business practices all in the name of keeping trains moving at all times to maximize profits Profits that were then taken by the hedge funds that own the railroad companies so that they can buyback their own stock which they have done at record rates cohencidentally ever since PSR became the common practice in the last 5 - 10 years depending on railroad company On February, 3rd a train heading from Illinois towards Conway station ran over a sensor that detects heat on the train wheels and axles that told them their wheels were on fire. Instead of STOPPING and inspecting and repairing the damage the crew on the train was ORDERED by dispatch to keep going towards Conway SO FOR OVER 20 MILES UNTIL IT HIT EAST PALESTINE THE TRAIN WAS GOING 30+ MPH WITH ITS WHEELS MELTING AND THEY KNEW IT

The four-digit UN number on the side of the car is required by federal law and that number can be cross-referenced in the HazMat Safety guide to aid Fire & EMA response. These rail lines run through large cities and small towns all across America. The fault detector did its job and the crew may well have stopped the train ASAP; the DOT will pull all the data and come to a conclusion. The part I don't understand: you have about 110,000 - 120,000# of vinyl cloride in each car-- there are about ten cars of it. So, that comes to about 1,200,000# of the material and NO ONE thought that burning that amount of a toxin would be unsafe??? What in the world were they thinking?

The fact that this can happen in the 21st Century is ASININE. Are we totally oblivious to reality? Unions want safety and were calling for improvements. CEOs choose to ignore.

The security film shows a fire caused by a hot bearing (Hot Box). The lubricant on the bearings of the axle fails, causing the axle/wheel assembly to heat and burn. This can fracture the wheel to pieces, the axle to break or the wheel to fall off the axle. Wikipedia has a fine article titled "Hot Box" with a drawing. "IF" the train passed over a Hot Box Detector with this condition and "IF" the Detector were working, there would an automatic radio alert, telling the train crew which car was in trouble and the train would be stopped to allow the conductor to inspect. This is the straight scoop from a retired railroad signal maintainer/supervisor/electronic technician.

IF the crew received Hot Box warning, what are the chances they were waiting for a second or 3rd Hot Box warning (just to confirm its real) due to all the "false" Hot Box warnings along the way? I'm asking because I have a long career in troubleshooting and false alarms are quite common in almost all industries. We make a machine to do the mundane tasks humans once performed but that machine doesn't have the intelligence to know it (self) has failed. People get "numb" to alarms when equipment is unreliable and gives off false alarms frequently. That was quite a blaze we saw the security video, meaning that Hot Box was in effect LONG before it reached this point.

Unfortunately, that's probably the way it will go down. Easier to throw them under the bus than to correct the underlying issues. The workers wanted to strike over concerns like this, but potato-head Creepy Joe Biden wouldn't allow them to do so, he ordered them to continue working against their will and against their contractual right to strike. Now we're witnessing the results of his misguided interference. He couldn't take time to deal with the real issues, it was time for his diaper change instead.

This is why RFK Jr! He has over a thousand lawsuits for families who were affected by the oil spill. there was an investigation done and found out that they didn't put heat sensors on the train cars, which meant the engineer didn't know that there was an issue. They didn't put them on to save money.

Basically they left a handbrake on a car in the middle of the train and, either 1. Wheels Melted off due to them dragging brakes, Then railcar loses wheels & fails off the rails with every thing behind it following.

It’s predicted programming this was a planned “event” by people at the highest level of government. Don’t be fooled, media is under their control to report whatever they need to control the masses. Movies are controlled by the same people. The chemicals were created by the same people doing the experiments in Germany they just turned into our congress, politicians and Hollywood directors, and priests, in disguise. They put these chems in your food and cause C word and other diseases that find big pharma. It’s an endless circle.

Where did these chemicals come from? Where were the chemicals going? What are these chemicals used for? What was the cause of this derailment of the train? Who decided they chemical will be burned? Is the combination of these chemicals more severe than just one chemical isolated? Who said the air is SAFE? Who is paying for bottled water? How are property values effected? Is it safe to bath or shower? EPA falsely report the air was safe after 9/11 and many people have died and are dying

Yeah. It's the PERFECT location for a biological attack. And it's JUST inside Ohio (a red state). As if they wanted to ensure it'd affect a republic state, and the location of the river means it'll flow ALL over red states causing serious water contamination problems. Livestock dying, crops dying, infertile poisonous soil, poisonous water supplies.
