Technically speaking, Orcas are not whales they are giant dolphins. They are just called whales because of their size but they have more attributes of a dolphin than a whale. Just like a moose is a giant deer but called a moose instead of a deer. However getting to the point, Seaworld will no longer take a new whale in or breed them. Well, in a manner of speaking they ARE whales, as the dolphin family is a sub-family of the family of toothed whales, which in its turn is a sub-family of the family of whales. That being said - I don't know which concept of the Sea World shows I dislike more, the "circus" shows they had before Dawn Brancheau's death happened, or the "instructional presentations" they are doing now. Because in the latter they present a lot of knowledge about orcas which they clearly counteract (such as by separating cow orcas and their 4-year-old calves, while mentioning in their shows how important these family bonds are for orcas). They don't even try to recreate the social structures in which these animals live in the wild because they cannot. Chances are that the orcas performing in one aquarium are not even all from the same area, that you have for instance transients and residents thrown together in one group, or orcas from the area of Iceland with those from far from the South. These can't grow together to form one social structure because the social structures from which they originate maight be slightly different to begin with. It's the same as a zoo trying to form a unified herd of Asian elephants by throwing animals from Thailand, Myanmar and Singapore together in one herd.

@CharlotteWeb1006 жыл бұрын
I'm tempted to think the worst thing you could do is anything that might excite an already agitated orca. They live with sensory deprivation and are under stimulated day in and out so suddenly having a trainer screaming and thrashing about must be like a highly interactive toy and make them worse. Most natural thing in the world must be to panic, kick and scream I can't imagine what it must feel like but wonder if the trainers not doing anything (at Ken Peter's instruction) is what made her finally let him go. Same when Steve Abel was faced with a major case of Orca zoomies at Texas. At one point he was very nearly out of the water using poles the trainers had to help pull him clear but was grabbed and pulled again at some force only letting Steve go after he did exactly the time and just stayed cool and stroked and calmed the orca down. A lot of the orca are reported to resource guard and will not give up toys to trainers and stay in the middle of the pool so nobody will take it off them. Wonder if an emergency distraction in the form of something they have never seen before might make them let go of a trainer to investigate that instead which sounds contradictory I know but when the orca pulled "Tamari" in the pool the other two got in on it and looked increasingly excited at her frantic screaming and trying to get out but stopped the second they thought Kasatka was coming in.

Have a learning center with wildlife vids or maybe even interactive led drones (by trained monitors) in at least a sea-pen (for captives who cant be released). My grand mother and father lived on fox island washington in puget sound from 1916 to 1926. Orcas where always present and she told me stories about them and they were only called black fish at the time. The only way to the island was by launch and the people had a healthy fear of them as they had seen them devour seals many times.

Super intelligent....she wanted a trade for her kid....she was using her version of sign language....knowing that the hu.ans are smart enough to figure out why she grabbed this guy! She felt it was in their power to show some compassion and bring her to her kid......or else. Very intelligent.
