CNN's Tom Foreman reports on a 2006 killer whale attack at Sea World.
SeaWorld should retire orcas (2016):

The youngest orca at SeaWorld San Diego just died suddenly:
www.cnn.com/20...
(CNN) - The youngest orca at SeaWorld San Diego died at the animal theme park from an illness, leaving those who cared for her heartbroken.
On Wednesday, Amaya, the 6-year-old orca, started showing signs of an illness so animal care specialists and veterinarians began treating her, SeaWorld said in a statement.
Almost 24 hours later, SeaWorld said, she died with her animal care specialists by her side.
"Despite her care team's efforts, Amaya's condition continued to decline rapidly. Her death was sudden and unexpected," SeaWorld said.
The name Amaya means "night rain," the website said, and credited the young whale with helping SeaWorld "gather and share critical information about calf development for researchers studying wild populations."

Simple. Stop capturing whales, forcing them to do tricks on command for profit. That doesn't sound too difficult to me.

+Marvin White yeah, look at horse racing. Dog racing. Hundreds of horses and dogs PER YEAR are euthanized due to injuries they sustain from racing for "our" entertainment. Point isn't whether an animal's life is innately worth something. Point is that we should be smarter than this and realize FORCING them into dangerous positions and making them do tricks and run till they're tongues are dragging the ground is not quite right. They cannot consent and you'll get owners swearing up and down that OH, they LOVE to run. I've worked at a dog track. I walked them and knew an owner and saw how their lives were. sad.

+Janine Robertson thank ye. There are a lot of people in the world that haven't outgrown their caveman instincts. Sometimes killing is necessary. Sometimes it's good to keep an animal in a zoo (if it is endangered to the point of extinction etc) but needless killings and making animals suffer for your entertainment is sad. Bull fighting is one that sits right at the top of my list along with big game hunting. There's no reason a person should pay thousands of dollars to go to Africa so they can shoot a lion and pose with its carcass while smiling proudly.

The only way that man survived that, was his experience in diving. He knew to hold his breath and to remain calm. When he reached the surface, you can see him taking deep slow breaths. If someone took my daughter away I would try to drown them as well. Edit: I don’t think yall idiots understand, but when you take a baby orca away from it’s mother they become very distressed and can even go through depression and fits of anger. Orcas are intelligent, social creatures and need to stay together in order to stay healthy and happy. What I’m saying is this creature is not at fault-it doesn’t know what the hell is going on or what humans even are probably-all it understands is that it’s baby is gone and that it is unhappy and will do anything to get their baby back. Also, these orcas are placed into small pools of water all alone that is basically the equivalent of a cage. If you were in a cage for almost fifty years, without contact of someone of your kind or that could understand you-you would slowly go insane and eventually snap. What happened to the trainers that were injured or killed by these whales was tragic and I hope the families of the deceased find closure-but we should not be seperating these animals or showing them off like freaks in a circus. These are animals, not entertainment.

I remember this! It was horrible. These poor animals are under tremendous stress and taken from their home in the ocean, taken from their pod and put on display for our entertainment. It's deplorable and SO sad. If seen or encountered in it's natural habitat, I'm certain that they would be calm and even playful with a person. Still, they are WILD ANIMALS that need to be respected and shown love and understanding. They weren't put here for us to exploit. Every trainer attack has been awful, but we need to stop this practice. If anyone disagrees with what I'm saying, then that's your right. However it doesn't mean YOU are right. It means that you are incredibly uncaring and cruel. Period.

I think human consciousness is a tragic misstep in evolution. We became too self-aware. Nature created an aspect of nature separate from itself. We are creatures that should not exist by natural law. We are things that labor under the illusion of having a self; a secretion of sensory experience and feeling. Programmed with total assurance that we are each SOMEBODY. When in fact, everybody is nobody. I think the honorable thing for our species to do is deny our programming. Stop reproducing. Walk hand-in-hand into extinction. One last midnight. Brothers and sisters opting out of a raw deal.

Kasatka had a new calf that was in the back tanks crying for her during this show. Presumably, that played a part in her attack. Also, she has had several calves "kidnapped" from her by the greedy bastards at SeaWorld. They took her calves away from her while she watched, unable to do anything to stop them, and transferred/sold them to other parks. There is footage of her crying out for her lost calves. She was clearly and without question, distressed and upset. And yet....they continued treating her with that level of disrespect and cruelty.....yet they wonder why this incident happened? And they wonder why the incident with Tilikum happened? These animals are trying to send a message......one that humans are clearly too stupid to recognize. Their message is..."How do YOU feel when you're held captive against your will and have no means of escape? Do YOU like it???". This attack could've been avoided. The deaths of several park employees could've been avoided. And yet, people still want to blame the animal. Who put the animal where it is right now? It sure as Hell didn't get there on its own accord and of its own free will!

Mark Vm You do realize that animals don't exert wild behavior at all? Their behavior naturally set as 'survival' mode, being survival of the fittest. Of course, all animals are smart, they do want to prove their point, but they know that humans are at the top of the food chain, harm could have been done to them that is worse than their trainer. It is not a stupid statement, it's a true statement.

I wish this could work. But unfortunately, many endangered species of animals/ rescued animals, could not survive in the wild. Zoos are getting much better these days, and are being held to much higher standards. It would be great if poachers could all be given jobs in the eco-tourism industry (as they've done in some locations). Until that happens, keep supporting the most natural-like zoos and aquariums (not show-biz places likes Seaworld), which are making a great difference in the lives of many animals.

As much as I like that story, it's most likely not true at all. These Orcas don't love these people. They're predators, known for playing with their food, known for being smart, agressive, violent killers in the wild. He stayed completely calm, that's what saved his life. He didn't thrash around, he didn't give her the stimulation she wanted and needed to continue playing with him until he was dead. As soon as he started swimming away she followed, she wanted him to move, just like how a seal would. He was incredibly lucky that what she wanted was excitement and not just his death. I am amazed at how he was able to stay so calm, it must have been terrifying.

@@littlelou050 Orcas are intelligent. Yes, they'll play around with their prey in the wild, but they don't play around with humans. For some reason. The whale literally watched the trainer swim away fast in fear and did nothing. I'm sure if she was looking for stimulation, that was enough to start playing again, but nothing. These are self aware creatures that don't act on instinct, but intelligence. She let him go. She knows very well that he isn't a seal.

@@emmanuelgathara696 I believe you've misunderstood my comment. I was not saying that she mistook him for food but that she was using him for stimulation like she would of he were food etc in the wild. You can see that once he starts swimming away she follows, I have little doubt that she wouldn't have taken him under again if he was too slow. Animals are incredibly intelligent, she knew that she held the power in that situation and he did too. The more stimulation that's given, the more likely he was too die because she would not have let him go. Humans can't survive under water for long and who knows how far she could've gone, she already crushed his feet. You have to understand the way these animals are treated in these places, they're given 0 stimulation other than those shows, are forced into everything, abused etc. They don't form an affectionate bond, they do not care for the lives of the people who've held them against their will. Humans have this irritating superiority complex and it has lead many to their deaths, shame.

What about elephants, then? They've killed plenty of people too. What about all other animals in zoos? And then, what about your pet cat or dog? Should they be freed too? Or is it just because they can't really kill you that it's ok (sure there have been deaths, but only by a fluke)? So it's really more about our own safety - "stay away from the killer whales or you'll get hurt" - than it is about wanting the best for them... If so, then isn't it the trainers' own choice whether or not they want to take that risk? Their life, their choice. Also remember that Killer Whales and other cetaceans tend to play rougher than we do - note all the scars on wild cetaceans. So what's just "playful nudging and pulling" to them, is rib-cracking force. Sure, this one may well have been angry, but doesn't any child have the potential for throwing a tantrum every now and then? The trainers know that and once again, it's a risk they're willing to take.
@Twiggytwiggs
@Twiggytwiggs 10 жыл бұрын
Vousie V Zoo animals I agree with you. But cats and dogs?? They are both domesticated animals and nine cases out of ten are better off with a human companion to take care of them. And we don't make it okay "because they can't really kill you" as you said. Dogs actually kill around 30 people a year (just in the United States) - much more than orcas do, and six times more people than sharks...yet we still keep them as household pets because of the natural relationships we form with them. And orcas are extremely smart mammals, this orca knew exactly what it was doing to this man. It was as much play for the orca as it was for the trainer.

As much as I agree with you, most of these animals are born in captivity and unfortunately, trainers get them used to human presence and help with food. These animals, if let out suddenly in the wild would have enormous difficulty hunting food and socializing because they weren't taught all of the hunting methods or subtle social etiquette that most mother killer whales tend to teach their baby. I'm not disagreeing with you on the fact that these animals shouldn't be kept in these tiny bathtubs and instead, humans should adapt to their environment and not the other way around. I'm just pointing out the fact that if grown-up killer whales were suddenly released into the wild without any pointers on how to properly survive, they would definitely struggle staying alive.

It’s said to know and read that there are people who still believe that it’s okay to held killer whales and other animals captivated and do shows to entertain people. Everything they learn those animals is unnatural.

Hmm, I wonder why Kasatka attacked. What a mystery. 😒 Would you not if you were her? She was controlling him as they attempt to control her. Orcas do not belong in tanks. These animals need to be moved back into the wild or at least sea pens.

It's Just Milk I Swear They kill people because they're kept in a fucking pool. Let's take a look at how many wild orcas have killed people, shall we? Captive orcas attack all of the time. They aren't stupid animals. They're wild, frustrated animals. Very intelligent and emotional animals at that. A pool is not where they belong.

It's Just Milk I Swear well why are captive orcas the only aggressive orcas? No orca attacks on humans have ever happened in the wild but plenty have happened in captivity. They know humans are in charge, they remember when humans stole them from their ocean home. "Wild animals" doesn't just umbrella all wild animal minds. Whales have very large brains and are very intelligent, each pod has its own language, etc. And they stay with family for life. When taken from their homes they are made aggressive. It's scientifically proven and also common sense.

Imagine being raised by people in a bathtub. Having to learn to walk, talk, sing, play instruments, and other impressive stunts. And only be fed when you do them correctly. That's how the whales feel. For decades they sit in the small tank having to learn stuff to keep an audience engaged. To get the park money.

LeAnn Houston it's easy to say that, but if nobody worked at seaworld then there would be nobody to care for the whales that are ALREADY captive and can't be released. Nobody is trying to make excuses for this man, your comment is entirely unrelated to what I commented. He wasn't the one who captured them. Many trainers at sea world are aware of the disgrace that this entire industry is, but by working with them are in fact ensuring they get the best care that they can offer under sea worlds tyrannical ownership of the animals. Until I see a trainer mistreat a sea world animal I won't hold anything against them specifically. It is the company that is to blame, not those who attempt to ensure these whales are looked after despite their disgustingly unfortunate and now irreversible fate. I've said my peace and don't want to say any more. My opinion is set. Don't waste your time. Thanks. Goodbye.

what you don't get is that whales are mistreated from the very moment they are in a tank, no matter whose fault it is. They're wild animals, not toys to entertain us with tricks. So yes, as unfortunate as this incident was, he and every trainer are a part of the problem. There would be no Sea World or anything like that if there weren't trainers willing to do that job. of course Sea World as a company is to blame first, and trainers have not the power to provide captive animals best conditions because that's not up to them. Blackfish would make this very clear to you
