one question please: always wondered...why all get caught in so many rules? how the feet are positioned, how the wrist are locked, the movement, etc, etc, etc, etc. in my opinion ... all these are making something which should be alive and adaptable into something dead. i really don´t think guys like Musashi&co were traped in so many rules about the correct way of using a sword, but in actually doing it. i am asking this from my ignorance. am not a kendo practicant, i am just observing it. for me is like the difference between karate and thai box...

If you formulate an opinion like "I don't think Musashi and co did this and that", you should be educated about it. Read more. You'd be surprised at the number of rules he (and others) came up with and wrote as gospel.

@@sylvainrobert5156 you lost the point of what i said just because you have something to prove. anyone has the right to have an opinion and ask an educated question like i did. feel ofended? get yourself a life

Well there's many things wrong there, and I think I'll stop engaging in whatever this is after this message. First I'll remind you the 2 parts of my previous comment: 1 If you formulate an opinion based on what you think other people think (Musashi and co), you need to know if they actually thought or said that. It's like me saying "I don't think Muhammad Ali was really a Muslim", it's something I can easily research and figure out on my own and go from there. 2 I just told you to read more. What's wrong with that? It's nice to get spoonfed info by asking random people questions on the internet, but it's much more satisfying to learn on your own. Now for your reponse: 1 the educated question you ask, as you put it, is a loaded question since you inject a quality bias in it implying the number of rules (is wrist position a rule?) in kendo or other martial arts are a bad thing, so there's a fallacy there. 2 I had nothing to prove... Until now, which is that you came in bluntly and from a place of not asking but telling, and that you formulated an opinion based on what you think other people think (Musashi and co), which is something you just can't do without doing the actual research yourself beforehand. 3 Offended? Not in the least, I'm well enough not to be moved by your two previous comments. Perhaps there's a beam in your eye you should check before worrying about the speck in mine? 4 Saying "get a life" is just you trying to be hurtful to either get the final word or rile me up. I'm sorry it didn't work. After all that, I hope you understand there was no harmful intent on my part, only perhaps a poorly aimed attempt at making someone reevaluate their way of engaging with other people that like a subject you're unfamiliar with. I personnaly won't keep any hard feelings about this exchange. Good day.

Klaus Ungureanu the rules are essential for correct kamae, which is important, in terms of shiai it can dictate whether or not an ippon is awarded. Following rules also leads to correct strike and technique, etc. such as determining maai and when to engage

The rules are the foundation for strong technique which becomes one's instinct as opposed to reaction.
