I just wanted to mention that after some research- my father and I both respect this music video and understand the meaning behind the music. I believe that after we go back and watch her other music videos, we will have a better understanding of what is going on here. This video was requested so much and so I decided to do this one first because I had no idea who this artist even was beforehand. Seeing her in this with no context or story of how she got here threw us off (as you can see). So, I apologize if any of this video was offensive toward her and her creative team. This was an amazing piece of work and a deep meaningful song. PS- My father says the song sounds "happy"- in which he means the musical portion. We know the lyrics and the video itself are quite the opposite. Thank you everyone for watching!

I agree with this comment. Honestly, much of the laughing was because the video was so unexpected. We had no idea what we were getting into, so you can imagine the constant surprise. I will admit my comments on her dancing were not very clear. I think it is obvious she is a very good dancer. The choreography here was designed to communicate a feeling, and I believe she absolutely nailed it. I find it interesting that many artists are connecting their music videos as if they exist in the same universe. I would have never expected this trend. But with that in mind- it is like we were invited to give our thoughts on the Marvel Universe and we started with Infinity War. Amazing film- but without any context, we would be confused for much of the movie. It would be impossible to have the emotional connection the diehard fans have watching it. On a smaller scale, that is what we were experiencing here because we started with The Void and went in blind. I do think we were very complimentary. There was a lot to like- and I think the song is catchy. I believe the meaning is deep and what she is trying to say is important. I apologize to any fans if this came across as disrespectful in any way. I believe if you were to watch realizing why we were laughing, you might find we had great respect for the MV and were blown away with the creativity. We found a lot to like.

I think it's best to watch Melanie's discography in the correct order because she tells a story which can be confusing to understand if you start in the middle. Her art is pretty surreal. Crybaby album is the starter of this story. I highly recommend you check out the MVs she did for that album.

Melanie has been writing, self-directing and co-editiong all her MVs, Performances, etc since the beginning of her career (even wrote and directed a feature length film for her sophomore album titled “K-12”). She's quite passionate about visual art and used to be a photographer in high school before making music. This song is from her 3rd studio album called PORTALS; the final part of the “Crybaby” trilogy! Crybaby is this character/alter-ego she has created from whose perspective melanie tells a story throughout her albums. PORTALS depicts that crybaby has died now and reincarnated into a new vessel as she goes through the different stages of afterlife.

Melanie is a great rabbit hole to dive into. She creates the concept and directs all of her MVs, and they are all connected between them telling one big story. This song is about mental health struggle and you can see in the MV that she's inside her own body and the intrusive thoughts and self criticism (represented by many forms, including a incubation of bad thoughts inside her) are bringing her down and trying to harm her. And she tries to scape and get rid of them but they keep coming back till the end. Her own eyes are staring and judging her. She is herself inside her heart, but when she's out she goes straight to her mind which is flashing those bad thoughts...

Melanie Martinez is my all time favorite artist. She is so special in my heart because she talks about sensitive things most artists won’t. Shes not afraid to show her true self in every piece of work she puts out. VOID is my #1 favorite song and I think its worth noting she self wrote and produced this song on her own, but also directed this music video along with most (if not all) of her other music videos. Shes a very visual artist and has creative design behind everything!!

I LOVE Melanie, she is just so quirky and different from everyone else! If you are interested, her first album CryBaby has a music video for every single song on the standard edition. You'd want to watch them in order. Her second album, K-12 shows Crybaby going through school, there is a full film on KZbin (the music videos are part of the movie). This music video is from her third album Portals. It's the afterlife of the character. We are hoping for a film but so far this and "Death" are the only music videos.

The bugs is a metaphpr for her killing her bad thoughts, as roses sprought out of the worm is her bringing the better thoughts to kill the bad ones with them. In her first album “Crybaby” she tells us about Crybaby’s traumatic childhood with drvgs and family issues, in her second album “K-12” she talks about Crybaby’s schoollife in a narcissist school (she also made a film of the album you should watch it) in the end she escape k-12 and enters a portal that lead her to the last album “Portals”, in portals, Crybaby dies and reincarnates to a pink four eyed creature that has to experience life( as the first track is “Death” and the last “Womb”). you were correct about the rotating camera for the scene where the cave is spinning!! there are usually some behind the scenes shots or very short videos to show some work on how she creates her music videos, or at least the most for void. she was dropped onto her knees using pulleys connecting her to the ceiling for the "kneeling on a metal grater" line after she shot herself!!

Melanie Martinez is one of my favorite artists. One thing I think you might have missed is that the giant worm looks a little (a lot) phallic. I believe it’s symbolic of the male gaze or appealing to men. She kills the worm and flowers sprout out which I think means that once she stopped trying to be attractive for men she blossomed.

ok so here is a little context: the songs creepy music video, movements and that kind of things are as dark as the meaning, the meaning is how it fells to have anxiety, wanting to unalive your self..., she is a nymph and thats how she imagines a nymph to be 4 eyes, colored skin... so its not that she chose to have four eyes just for the video. cheers -leo
