Melanie Martinez released the music video for “Mad Hatter” on September 23, 2017. It features Melanie’s character, Cry Baby, in her room smoking when she notices a bottle with a label that says “Drink Me”, a parallel with the trope from Alice in Wonderland. Cry Baby drinks the liquid and passes out, fading into a pastel, nightmarish Wonderland. Via Instagram, Melanie explained that the stuffed animals are supposed to represent her closest friends and how they’ve helped her out of situations where she was forced into being something she isn’t. In the music video, Cry Baby is shown in various terrifying situations, from which her stuffed animal friends save her.

In an interview with ARTISTDirect, Melanie said that "Mad Hatter" is about being okay with who you are. In this song, Cry Baby is fully accepting herself and doesn't care what other people think of her. The song includes many references to and takes a lot of inspiration from the 1865 fantasy novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. The song is the closing chapter of the story because Cry Baby embraces the chaos inside of her, refusing to hide it regardless of what the world thinks, representing her character development throughout the album.

Mad Hatter is about her acceptance to being crazy while also accepting her powers as an empath. You gotta watch the whole thing in order when you get a chance, also the Movie K-12 goes more in depth on how her owers work and it intertwines with Portals

You’re right it did take a lot of time do this video. It was her last music video to her Crybaby album, it took much longer to release (almost a year) compared to the others cuz of the budget . SO GOOD it was worth the wait ! 😬😊

This video is about mental health and all her music videos are about dark/lore/story line and she puts meanings to make them feel like her own and for people to understand cause I think she’s said before that her videos relate to her that’s why she made a movie I think you would like to react to (the movie has some weird things but it’s called k-12 the movie!-+*🌸🎀⭐️
