I have a small vertical line (or bar) appearing between two segments. What is it? and why won't iMovie let me join the two segments? Thanks.

That is supposed to be there just as an indicator to you to see that there is a cut. It's not a real line, just to empathise the cut. It will not show on the exported clip.

The vertical line is a virtual line it does not show when you export the video. It is purely there to clearly emphasize the cut. You can't remove it.
