Indian space agency has come a long way from being dependent on others for building and launching satellites in 90s, to locally itself build and launch advanced satellited and also spacecrafts.

Actually, we were able to build satellites even in 70s. Our first satellite Aryabhatta was built by ISRO n launched by then Soviet Space agency. We launched our first satellite using our own launch vehicle.successfully in 1980 itself. It was Rohini, launched by SLV3. And PSLV was developed in 90s.
