Just some clarifications about Lindbergh Loader that the author posted on the Arcade Projects forums: The intent of the project is the ability to replace a broken original Lindbergh system with a standard Linux PC. As pretty much all Lindbergh systems are Linux based PCs anyway, it is very unlikely that this will ever get a native Windows port. Also, this Loader isnt new, it has been out for over 2 years - this is just the newer better V2 version! This does NOT emulate any host system - it is more akin to Win95/98 compatibility mode in Win10/11. This wont be an alternative to Teknoparrot on Windows!

Without having much looked into it, I'm not sure this can be easily done. SEGA Lindbergh was a Linux-based PC in an arcade cabinet, so this emulator doesn't need to really emulate everything, but rather provide a framework so that the binaries from around 2006 can work. E.g. if you look into the src folder, you'll find old version of Linux libraries. That's probably the reason the project's original name is "Lindbergh Loader", as I don't think it does what is usually understood as emulating a platform. In that regard it's more similar to WINE which loads Windows binaries under Linux. However, Windows doesn't have such a compatibility for Linux anymore - WSL 1 did provide this infrastructure, but the approach was changed with WSL 2. So while a Windows port is possible not impossible, it would certainly be quite the undertaking.

It's highly unlikely it supports real controls and motors etc unless they allow a pass-through as they will have to emulate the controls and i/o boards as part of the emulation. If that can be turned off and it just sees the real controls and motors then yeah that would be good enought to run in real cabs to fix a broken arcade PC by substituting it with a common home PC. Seems unlikely though.

@@g4z-kb7ct It's not an emulator. It was designed for exactly the case of replacing broken Lindberg systems with commodity Linux PCs. Some games use a common JVS I/O board but the gun games require a lot of extra stuff and those I/O boards are over $1K now, plus the monitor has a bunch of IR leds around the edge. @@VideoGameEsoterica Eh, I had the same qualms when I first read it but figured maybe they were emulating specific CPU or GPU instructions that are proprietary to the original system or some peripheral I/O crap. Like the whole system doesn't technically need to be emulated for something to be an 'emulator' I imagine there's more than meets the eye with what's happening but I haven't inspected their libs to confirm it.
@RetroDawn2 күн бұрын
@@mysteryencoder9997 According to someone else here, it's just a SegaAPI implementation and an input wrapper. I haven't checked this or the Lindbergh arch out, but that would make sense. In which case there would be no need for an emulation, since apparently the games were all developed against an API that abstracted the hardware.

It's a translation layer, kind of like Rosetta, Wine or Proton, and I believe the Xbox One Windows 10 software uses a translation layer too, as the XB1 already uses the exact same game data images as the Xbox store PC game releases, they both download from the same repository on the MS Xbox server, I'm waiting on Rare Replay being 100% perfect on Win10, will be sweet as playing the Banjo games, CBFD, Grabbed by the Ghoolies etc with 4X DSR & RTX lighting.

There's bound to be a huge market for them! I'm pretty sure there are some users of emulators who would happily pay for at least a couple of games rather than going to ROMsites, especially if it's a translation of a previously Japan-only game. They could even provide an emulator for those legal ROMs and tbh, if I was connected to Retroarch (or MAME for that matter) I'd be contacting the rightsholders for these old ROMs to provide such a thing.

Yeah they seem to vary wildly, some use 4:3 CRT cabs at 480p 31Khz (HOTD4) and the Lindbergh Arcade Multi seems to be a CRT cab, and some use 16:9 768p LCD, and the later releases use 1080p 16:9, some games use multi-res for different levels, most were HD flat-screen cabs though by the looks of it, not sure if any used Plasma displays, as some arcade cabs did, I've always wanted one of those gorgeous Sega Net City or Lindbergh arcade cab 29" 4:3 CRTs, they are tri-sync 800 TVL up to 1280x960p, would be so nice for a huge high-res Win98se gaming monitor, almost on par with the NEC XP29-Plus Extra monitor (29" tri-sync that can do up to 1600x1200p75Hz), the ultimate retro PC/Amiga monitor.

I kind of hope they can make a Windows variant of this emulator but I'm not complaining. Maybe 2025 we'll get the '97-'02 arcade emulators or MiSTer cores. It's crazy that the Lindbergh hardware was pumping out eye candy that good during the 7th gen with nothing but a single core Intel P4 3GHz & GeForce 7800 GTX Series GPU with just 256MB GDDR3 VRAM (same N47 core GPU in the PS3, AKA the RSX), Initial D looks better than anything that came out on the PS3 by miles imo, you would think that it maybe had two GPU's installed with super-sampling, by no, just the one, that's the power of fixed hardware optimization, and I'm guessing the OS was heavily optimized, meaning they could task the CPU for some 3D rendering duties, it has a decent 64 channel 3D synthesizer card too, which is in fact an off the shelf Creative E-MU CA10300 DAC & DSP based Audigy PCI sound card, a decent card with all the bells & whistles (EAX/A3D/MIDI/WAV/Soundfonts/DSP/etc), you can literally build your own Lindbergh box in theory, if you had the custom Linux OS and a way to emulate or bypass the PIC Microcontroller lockout IC (RP2400 could perhaps do this?). I canny wait for an affordable FPGA to be available that can emulate a Pentium M (Dothan core), which were available from 1.1Ghz to 2.27Ghz, they had much higher IPC than P4 and a 1Ghz Pentium M outperforms a P4 2.4Ghz, so the Pentium M series is perfect for FPGA, you can even start with the first models that were clocked at 800Mhz, which were still faster than a 2Ghz P4, would be perfect for an FPGA Windows 98se gaming system, along with one of the new FPGA based Voodoo 3000 GPU cards and an Audigy soundcard, put a Dreamblaster in there too if you want extra synth support, we can't be that far off from this now, 2026/7 perhaps, the perfect FPGA Retro PC would be a Pentium M 2.2Ghz, Radeon 9800Pro, Creative Audigy2, 3GB RAM, and a DreamblasterXG16, that's my pipe dream.

Is this created with the packages being installed or should it already be there? I have since learnt that SteamOS 3 on the Steam Deck ships as a read-only system, so using any package management will either fail (or maybe have only temporary results) ...unless the user enables developer mode, which is not ideal... The Lindbergh used an Audigy 4 I believe (E-MU ASIC), which would need some pretty beefy hardware to emulate, the ASIC is about the performance of a 2GHZ single core CPU, as well as the DAC & DSP IC's on top of that, emulating it would be no small feat, not sure if Lindburgh used standard EAX, but I assume it probably did, which is pretty dope, which means if you have native EAX support on your rig, no emulation should be necessary, as this is just a translation layer (not emulation), then again, most Realtek codecs have built-in SB16 & EAX1/2 emulation modes, nothing like the real EAX processing, but it works, ASUS DAC's also have EAX 1&2 emulation. (I recommend installing the X-Fi MB3 drivers on Steam Decks for this reason, it allows for SB16/Pro/EAX emulation & soundfont loading, which is better than the stock Realtek drivers, great if you don't have a decent external Creative USB sound module like the G6 or X-Fi GO USB which both have a full-fat E-MU ASIC & HQ DAC & DSP + HP-AMP, plus native EAX up to EAX5HD & MIDI & soundfont/soundbank support)
