The main character is not afraid of gun. In actuality, he did expressed his eagerness in shooting. Not going to compare to the music of GVP. But this music carried something. Both Onnoda Nadandhaa and Kaattumalli were soulful.

I don’t agree much with many of the points here. I think it’s an excellent film. Was completely satisfied. To some of the points that mentioned, GVM became ruthless after the assassination of the 4 cops. I don’t think they could have stretched more in showing the reason for his change. It’s more like basically saying everyone’s perception keeps changing depending on the side they are in. Yes the 2 songs are not needed, but it didn’t affect the film in anyway. And it was pretty obvious that the two leads were completely in love with each other, I don’t get it why you expect the director to show how deeply they were in love instead of the two songs. I think we are overanalysing in the name of review. I didn’t find a single scene in the film which was not good or which could have been avoided. Huge fan of your reviews. Just my thoughts!!

I get the point about not capturing the emotions of small characters in the story.... but I felt that this is a story of Kumerasan, I think it should be focusing on Kumersan's feelings and emotions... Otherwise the story might get a little lagging... I agree to the part where the songs made the story telling a little slow... But how can we say no to a Ilayaraja song😅..He's still at his best...Overall it's good movie and a good setup for Part 2

Review for Baradwaj's review on Maestro Ilayaraja's music in Viduthalai: IR music is PHENOMENAL. BEST MUSIC (both Songs and Background Score) in the entirety of Vetrimaaran's filmography, UNDOUBTEDLY. The songs provided breathing space in an otherwise brutal movie. The placement of all the 3 songs, is also perfect: 1. Arutperum jothi - in less than 15 seconds or so, the song was abruptly cut while I wanted it to linger on for its fullest length. 2. Vazhi neduga kaattumalli - Beautifully picturized. Subtle emotions of the two leads also did justice to the beauty of the music. Ananya Bhat and IR vocals sound even more heavenly in the theater. 3. Onnoda nadanthaa - Dhanush's vocals actually FUSED WELL with the visuals! The song was like a pleasant journey, both aurally and visually. Unlike others, I did like his raw tone in the song, but since he is not blessed with good vocal cords, it might have bothered our folks - the kinds who use SPB's name to put down even an excellent singer like Mano. Coming to the Background Score, none other than IR would have done justice to the movie. The score is nothing less than the so-called "Hollywood" movies'. It was intriguing, mystic, adrenaline-pumping and soulful - as needed at the right spots. It was engrossing from the titles to the end credits. And the romantic theme was fascinating. Even the very-short pathos song in IR voice was moving. There is only one scene where the music is quite upbeat; it could be that Vetrimaaran wanted the music to be from the cops' perspective; that is the ONLY possibility I can think of.

Superb bc99. When others complained abt the music, i seriously doubted the complainants. I experienced this evening in the cinema. I would never say IR did a good job as who are we to score IR's score? What credibility do we have to judge IR's music. To me, the music including the songs was extraordinary. The modern age beats reminded me of Kill Bill, where diversity in music was seen.

That's some amazing analysis my brother. I too felt that vetrimaran should have placed the full song (Arutperum Jothi). Thats a soul stirring composition. @@VishnuVarthan-ZappyLad Just walked out of the theatre. It’s quite a mixed bag of feelings for me personally, I feel the screenplay really lacked something. Performances were great, both cinematography & music were memorable enough. Though I’d say this is the least significant movie of Vetri till date imo. I missed the nail biting tension of Visaaranai & emotional highs from Asuran. Besides that, it’s solid, but not marquee enough. I agree with BR ...It is definitely a good movie which talks about the pressing issues that can't be ignored in the society and should be addressed as many times as possible, performances was brilliant, even with its slow pace kept me hooked throughout the movie ...but it doesn't take away the fact that the film lacks at many cinematic aspects... 1.The inconsistency in the cinematography (it was brilliant at many places like the first and final sequences but also patchy out of focus and grainy at many places ) 2. As the saga of asuran continues, the dubbing is poor 3.Of course most the movies of vetrimaran is dialogue and detail driven but you won't feel it while watching the film...but here I can feel it which gives a bit of documentary vibe 4.I love Maestro...but u can't deny that the music is overplayed and outdated at some places ..take his recent venture Psycho for example he was brilliant and left the silence at many places when required. 5. Repeatative scenes and plot armors...example soori asking the etaiya multiple times to tell the superior about perumals location and perumal not changing the location for many days even when he knew they would come for him. 6.Even though it deals with a subject much heavier and gruesome than visaranai ...the impact it left on me was almost as half as visarani did. Still it is a movie that stays true to it's value and conveyed with a gut punch and must watch for every one.

The lousy dubbing, some jarring shots, edits, and the big plot hole (When the Naxalite group knows Soori's character has identified them, will they still be waiting in the same place without moving to another place?) Though a good film with all the craft being at its excellent form the misses like the above did interrupt while watching the film for me. And this is not the first time a simple lip sync issue is there in director Vetrimaran's film. An audience can forgive and move forward in appreciating the film. But, why is no reviewer addressing these issues? Yes, the film is something that all Tamil audiences must watch - mainly because mainstream audiences will get the socio-political layers of earlier decades. But what is the excuse - why do film reviewers don't bring this up in their reviews - talk about the good and the bad in filmmaking so that the filmmakers might hopefully be accountable.

Maestro Ilayaraja's music was phenomenal and gripping. This review is no different from the plethora of others out there in Tamil. I watched it today, The film's screenplay was the biggest culprit for its lackluster performance. While the movie had a promising premise, the execution failed to live up to its potential. " It never occurred editing was the issue to me. And the cinematography except the breathtaking opening and climax sequences the choice of look and visual portray left me wondering why they made it this way. The music was another significant disappointment. Take Iraniyan 1999 for example here, which reflects the immoral atrocity against common people much effectively. Vetrimaran missed a great opportunity here. P.S I was preparing myself mentally, to watch Viduthalai. But it left pain in my head instead of my chest. It was a sub par from Vetrimaran.

Fantastic and engaging movie. Intense watch Only thing if anything that didn work for me is gvm character's abrupt jump in character introduced as decent to ripping nail off the next scene. It kind of one place the violence seemed forced. Also soori never came across as coward or reluctant to pick up gun in the beginning . I dono what baddy Is talking about there. To me it was a trip with the protagonist, it played like a novel. And music worked big time for me. Is it over top sure, is it close to scent of the soil, absolutely.

Baddie it’s entirely possible to review without detailing the plot to the level that you do here. Also, disagree with your criticisms overall - the love arc would’ve disrupted the pace of the film if it had been fleshed out more, tbh their characters interact quite a bit throughout the film, enough to make the climax work! also you wanting the movie to take a harder political stance is weird- by just presenting the premise of the issue with well written characters on both sides ( except maybe chetans character, quite single dimensional at the end), the movie treats the audience with respect and allows them to make sense of it themselves, saving itself from being hammy and cringe. My biggest positive is the film not overly tugging on the audience heart strings and main ring a mildly objective tone throughout but weirdly you seem to see that as a negative, I simply don’t agree with you in that regard.

What do we learn from viduthalai-1 apart from the impact of brutality that it creates on us? My biggest takeaway from the film is how easily position gives you the power to exploit your subordinates and the common man and that anyone who enters the system can internalise and fall for this arrogant power which is a drug. It takes a people's movement to fight against this arrogance, but an individual with good conscience can only work within the system and not against it no matter how badly you are impacted by it. Power is only to serve for the needy so it should not make you feel superior to the same community that you come from and work for. We need to streamline how someone gains, understands the impact and then uses his/her power for the greater good. An eg that already exists: a well structured 3 year training program for IAS officers after a highly scrutinised selection. Such proper moral training to be given for all public sector workers according to the need as people are easily influenced and carried away from their moral conscience. This might be just one amongst the multiple solutions. We need to make more such films continuously that makes us think and possibly work in the right direction. Vetrimaaran has once again succeeded in creating such discussions.

Saw the movie today, excellent story and there were only 2 songs and it didn't drag the movie. Soori, sethupathy and Bhavani were great. It never felt long given the subject, action scenes were not over the top. Overall it's a good cop thriller and can't wait for part 2. Highly recommended I would watch it 2 times.

Vijay sethupathi character name is inspired from real life person named kaliyapermal. I don't think the character name (perumal) is based on god name since vetrimaran doesn't believe in one. Conveying the director true intentions is important. The director wants people to read about kaliyapermal and his fight.

The point is how come the actors, actress and directors are stinkingly rich without doing nothing tangible to the society at large and keep on criticizing the corporates 24/7, 365 days in a year. They buy houses and apartment worth crores of rupees and shed crocodile tears for the downtrodden and marginalized people. The point is, they know how to make money by using the downtrodden and marginalized people as the core narrative. Very sad and Unfortunate, that common man thinks all are real.

Visaranai is vetrimaran's zenith as a movie. Post Visaranai, vetrimaran is not as nuanced as earlier. Earlier all his characters were grey, now he is moving towards commercial movie format of good vs evil. But Vetri being Vetri,he may even spring a surprise. He may even look into the dark aspects of these naxalite/revolutionary movements. So it is too early too judge. But nuance in socio political dramas is very important. On that front, MariSelvaraj is the best right now.

To a certain extent, the mainstream approach is essential to make a film that’s both commercially and critically acclaimed. He mentioned in an interview that, “I’ll never direct a movie if it doesn’t hit the mark financially, unless it does a break even.” It makes a lot of sense if you look at it from a business perspective. Nevertheless, the nuances are still there, but just not as prominent as his other films. Ultimately, I believe the least important commercial aspects still doesn’t hinder the story that he wants to tell, to leave an emphatic statement.

It's Vetrimaaran's greatness in finding potential in Soori. Boy, who knew Soori can pull out such feat? This is what I like about Vjs: it may look like his movie but it was the farmer, Aishwarya Rajesh and now Soori that shone in Kadaisi Vivasaayi, Ka Pe Ranasingham and now Viduthalai part - 1 respectively. This is what an actor does: loves being a part of a great movie even if the role is minor ... The crux of the story is the romance of Soori in a difficult backdrop of terrorism mediated by Vjs's gang (good assumed for evil) that's being chased by police (evil assumed for good) at any cost ... while I get it that Rangan is not all pleased with the arc of the plot (for want of better words), I feel this can be forgiven ... Sorry, all specialists of movies: I am not a pro. Rangan hit a chord when he explained why commercialization of movies is inevitable in India. The audience is evolving fairly rapidly. Bring in the nuances. Let them learn to deal with it. Yes, the songs added no value at all.

'Gangs of Wasseypur' and 'Raktha Charitra' came to my mind for Indian Cinema. Of course, there is also the Apu trilogy. There are numerous examples from around the world. Francois Truffaut made five films documenting the life of Antoine Doinel, a fictional character, across some 20 years. Coppola made 'The Godfather'. And so on...
