Travelling with a historian would be the best thing ever. Don't even need a tour guide. From this video, Vienna is already my favorite city in Europe. It's cultural but not at all boring, since it hosts a lot of cultural festivals. I'll definitely have to visit.

It's amazing what you forget when you live in Vienna. In my ordinary life I rarely see these awesome buildings. But once a week I take a stroll around the first district and then I remind myself why I moved to Vienna in the first place. Amazing city.

Rusty Shackleford That's a difficult point. Up to WW2 they definitely did. It's technically right to say that Austrians are Germans, but since most foreign people understand "german" to be a citizen of Germany rather than an ethnicity found in different countries, Austrians generally don't like to be called "german". A lot of younger Austrians don't even think about ethnicity any longer, don't know much about history and are just ignorant about all that stuff. Also, after the war, as Germans were portrayed as some kind of monsters by foreign media, Austrians seeked to somehow seperate from them. Also keep in mind that world leaders after the wars had a huge interest in weakening the power of Germans. After WW1 the german remaints of Austria (=modern Austria) wanted to join the Federal Republic of Germany, but British, American and Soviet leaders forbid. They also forced 'eternal neutrality' into Austria's constitution. There's so many factors in all of that... Long story short: ethnically we Austrians are german, but just don't call an Austrian german, sadly most people will regard you extreme right-wing, ultra-nationalistic, ...

@@o0OAnnamariaO0o "Austrians don't even think about ethnicity any longer, don't know much about history and are just ignorant about all that stuff." When you wrote that I remembered a classmate of mine in a college history class. Her family was from Austria, she spoke fluent German, and went there very year, but she did not know very basic and common things about world or European history. She did not know which nation was fighting who during WWI. She did not know if the Austro-Hungarian Empire was fighting against the Allies or not, or if they were fighting against the Ottomans or with them. She would ask questions about which side they were on or if they were on the side of the French. Also, she goes to Vienna every year.

I was therein between Saturday 11 April and Sunday 19 April 2015. The most important step-in was in the Schloß Schönbrunn. It is a marvelous complex of all possible luxurious lieu of such a real royal palace with its fantastic gardens all around. I visited this extravagant palace several times when I came to Vienna the first time be the first days of the glacial January 1993. The best walking experience in the Schloß Schönbrunn is across the Parterre Gardens, and then to going up to highest point at the Gloriette passing by the Neptun Fountain at the foot of the hill. It is a must in Vienna. Do not come to Vienna and miss this piece of pure and rare beauty, never ever. I envy the local population for their magnificent Vienna and that sublime endroit. I hoped to be one of them just to go therein each weak-end whatever the weather is.

What the waitress says to him at 12:14 is the perfect embodiment of "Wiener Schmäh", or Viennese mindset and humor. She says "Soll ich glücklich dreinschauen?", which more or less translates to "Should I make a happy face for the camera?", but I think it also has a heavy undertone of "Get that camera out of my face", telling him to stop filming without ever actually saying it, because, you know: We Viennese are polite, but we don't mean it.

I always 'judge' videos about Austria from the point of view, whether or not they make me homesick. Well, you certainly nurtured my wish to go back there soon. Being Canadian now, but with thick and heavy Austrian roots, I give you a big thumbs up for your knowledgeable commentary . . . and, what really took me in . . . your musical affinity! Thank you very much for making and sharing this excellent film.

I have the same criteria in judging videos on Austria. Canadian from the Melk-Durnstein region along the Danube. I have always enjoyed Rick's travel videos and had to settle my stomach with good content here after watching two videos on the foods in Vienna. They were so misinformed that I actually left bad comments to let people know the information was incorrect. Fortunately, I was not alone.

Quick Cookie In traditional Austrian kitchen cookies are not an all-year treat. They are very different that American cookies, smaller, crunchyer (or just harder), less sweet, but often stuffed with marmelade and decorated with chocolate or sugar coating, ... and are usually made during Advent for Christmas, or for a wedding. Traditionally Viennese coffeehouses sell all kinds of pastries and cakes, even sausages and Gulasch, but cookies are a seasonal thing, just like doughnuts, which are made for Carnival. If austrian mums and grandmas made something sweet for the family on sundays, it used to be cakes, flat-fruit-tartes, or yeast-dough pastries. In modern times though the bigger, sweeter American cookie found more and more lovers in Austria, just like doughnuts, Muffins and Cupcakes. 😊
