Thank you for the critical analysis of the situation in Vietnam. As a regular visitor to the country, you hit the nail on the head. The SGN airport is such a joke. Immigration took me less than a minute at autogates as a non-resident to enter Indonesia (CGK). In Vietnam, I’m a resident and had to manually apply for autogate use. And it doesn’t even work. Immigration is the first thing foreign tourists and business travelers encounter once they land here. And SGN lets elderly stand in line for 1+h?! After they’ve been traveling 20+h?

Spot on-it’s not the $3.95 fee, but the frustrating visa process and long waits that push travelers away. I visit Vietnam about 4-6 times per year (business mostly) and each time the whole process of application for visa, arriving and departure at HCM airport, immigration, rude behaviour by any authority and the taxi scams, make it hard to enjoy the visits. It is the incredible beauty if both the people and the nature that make up for all the nuisance, but you are absolotely right: this needs to change and drastically improve. I live in Kuala Lumpur and travel intensively throughout Asia and I see Vietnam lagging behind more and more, where others are excelling in making you feel a welcome traveler in their country.

We arrived in Saigon last weekend and spent nearly 2hrs in the customs queue. I would have happily paid a small fee if I knew I could have skipped it. The kicker is when you get to the front of the line and the customs officer treats you like a criminal. I had my family with me so brought my children forward so we could get processed together, like most places allow, but the lady just waved her hand aggressively and said "One, one!". So I stayed and they stepped back. I asked, can't my children come with me? and she completely ignored me and just waved at my kids to go away. The thing is, I can speak Vietnamese and my wife said, "Why didn't you ask her why she was being rude in Vietnamese?" To be honest, I could not be bothered dealing with such a rude person after an 8hr flight from Australia, and I figured arguing the point could get me sent to the back of the line 😂. We visited America last year and I had heard terrible stories about the officers at LAX, but the guy we got was very direct but also charming when we messed up the fingerprint scanner. Once we were all done, he wished us a great trip, and said welcome to the USA. Such a huge difference in first impressions.

Second, the visa process is has detoured me on more than one occasion. Vietnam has the is it worth it feeling now in Asia.

I cannot use the autogates as a foreigner so my wife waits with me in the queue because she’d have to wait for me to come through anyway. If the new Metro line project delivery timeline is anything to go by, the new HCMC airport will be decades away, unless otherwise given some priority by the Government. It is possible to deliver an airport terminal quickly. They built the new Cam Rahn international terminal from scratch in 2 years.

If the Vietnamese govt wants to promote the country as a tourist destination, then start off by getting rid of the ridiculous Visa fees for Americans just to enter the country. The cost of obtaining the visa cost almost as much as my plane ticket. #2. Stop trying to rip off tourists, let alone your own citizens at the airport. Everything that is sold at the airport is in $USD. I bought 2 bottles of water because I saw that it was labeled 40 Duong. When I went to pay they charged me $8 for the 2 bottles of Aquafina. Once I finished the bottle, I wasn't about to shell out another $4, so went to the water refill station to only find it to either be broken or only a trickle with a queue of 20+ other traveller's. I Won't be going back anytime soon until they get rid of the extortious visa fees and highway robbery at the airport. I'll prefer to spend my tourist $$$ in Thailand, Philippines or any other SE Asian country.

Pick a low pollution charming city. See how you can make that the next important tourist location by holding the next important meeting or convention there: the meeting between Trump and Putin for example. The location can remain undisclosed until the two are leaving or have left the city. I think Putin and Trump should meet without disclosing the meeting until they are on the way out. At that time, the Vietnam president and other heads of state should welcome them. This is the time they should bring their press and not have the global incompetent press at US MSM for example, in the roll of delivering information they are clearly unable to deliver. If the media focus on that safe beautiful city for its safety, cleanliness, low pollution, that will draw more people and probably the kinds of people that Vietnam wants as tourists. Meetings are important but we rarely get to know anything real about them because of today's totally dishonest and incompetent media. They don't want you to know what is happening. They want you to know what they think. What could be more hideously boring? BTW, good job on getting more subscriptions. It looks like they've doubled in the past year.

It's the lack of efficiency that is in question. I went to Vietnam in 1990 for business. It sounds like government workers haven't changed much. Tourism is also business. It doesn't have to be like Thailand's tourism. It can't be a quality destination with subpar administration.

agree with most points but other countries also have fast track lane that you pay for or have premium ticket to access. You forgot to include the 500,000 fast track service for Saigon and Hanoi airports. Booked via the ever-present visa agents, it's worth it to those who can afford it, rather than waiting 2 hours in a queue after a long haul flight
@duongglobalbusinessconsulting2 сағат бұрын
You are absolutely right-those fast-track services exist, but let’s call them what they are: a workaround for a broken system. Charging travelers half a million dong to bypass the mess doesn’t solve the core issue. Sure, it’s worth it for those who can afford it, but what about everyone else? A smooth, fair, and transparent process should be standard for all travelers, not a luxury. Vietnam shouldn’t rely on band-aid solutions that prioritize short-term profit over long-term reputation. Fix the queues, streamline the process, and make arriving in Vietnam an experience that leaves travelers impressed, not frustrated. That’s how you win-not by selling shortcuts to avoid chaos.

The line at Immigration is long, but everything else regarding visa fees and visa applications is not that difficult.

I always fly in and out of vietnam from Da Nang and it’s always been a breeze. Only flew to SGN domestically. Thank you for the heads up to avoid international flight from SGN but rather from BKK or KL or even MNL.

That is just playing in a game you can't win. You should not have to pay anybody. If you follow Vietnam's immigration law and you have a valid visa, you can't be denied entry as airlines will bear deportation costs. If everybody was denied entry, airlines would no longer fly to Vietnam.

100% agreed.... Allowing other ASEAN countries' vehicles seemlessly like every other country in the region would be great too, rather than charging 1000 USD for a permit.

Thank you! Countries are very complex entities, just as our feelings towards countries can be. I found your clip interesting and informativ. I still love Vietnam, despite its darker sides. My own homeland has dark sides too. There are no "heaven on earth". But we must do what we can to take care of the one planet we all share together. Can't we just all agree with that.?!

Malaysia and Thailand are by far easier to go enter, absolutely true. And the speed of these airports (even prior to auto-gates) are fantastic which makes it a much nicer process, especially after a long day of flying. BUT... I think that trust is the biggest issue for tourists (and business). There is so much conversation about scams (because they are common), and last time I went through the airport, I had the standard taxi scan where they wanted to charge me 10x what the normal cost is. It just tells you upon arrival that you really need to be careful with your money, it's not safe. Of course, the taxi situation isn't a massive problem in itself, but it causes people to look closer at the honesty of certain businesses and it doesn't encourage either tourism nor business. These issues are less of an issue in both Thailand and in Malaysia in my experience. Feeling safe is key to both tourism and business, and while VNs a physically safe country, financially it's more challenging without care.

Had my 4th visit in Aug 23. I got the $25 entry e-visa rejected on arrival. My passport and visa number has a digit transposed, but not by me, somehow my 'valid' visa got noticed and I had to buy an emergency $170 visa. There were 4 of us at the visa office with the same issue??? So to me thats a scam. A $170 scam on arrival leaves a nasty taste. I has an awesome time and love to visit Viet Nam but Im still unhappy about that.

Sadly, this is the reality for FDI as well... they're squeezing everyone at this point. It is time to leave this place for better laws and policies.

I mean in the grand scheme of things, I don't think a $4 airport fee is going to crush the tourism market. The biggest thing they need to do is to allow 3 month visa extensions to be done at the local immigration offices. I think having to do a visa run once a year isn't too big of a deal, but having to do one every 3 months is really annoying.
@duongglobalbusinessconsulting10 сағат бұрын
But if issues remain identical, you can add all the fees you want, they are not going to fix the problems. It is only adding an extra issue on the top of the existing ones.

Personally my average time going thru SG custom and baggage pick up is about an hour. Except for one time whem one of my luggages didn't appear. China learned from Singapore a lot. Singapore is the largest investor in Vietnam. Live and learn...

Main thing for me is cleanliness. Everything is becoming much more polluted. Rubbish everywhere. People put rubbish under their tables in food premises. Visa process is such a small process. Yes i agree it is annoying, but not priority. Priority is to keep the place clean. You don't want to get into a nightclub quickly just to see an unclean venue.

It is an interesting issue. It is only at airports I feel I am in an old communist state, waiting in slow lines for the visa stamp. Last time, the customs man rejected by electronic visa (the image on my phone) and sent me away to get a paper copy... this was an hour before my home flight departed! My electronic copy was accepted the five times before that! I did not know where to begin to get a paper copy, but a nice person from a third country airline did it for me. The visa is so restrictive, too, just 30 days. But I am from Australia and we have truly authoritarian rules for Vietnamese visitors, so I think it is our fault. My French friend, whom I met for my travels, did not need a visa and she had a very easy time. My experience is also that domestic passengers are treated like cattle, but international passengers are treated very well, for the most part. Thank you Ken!

Such a shame . I wonder who makes these new rules ? Airport management ? I heard that certain airports are privately owned.

Can you bring to attention the increase in bikes with exhausts modified for maximum noise? The street coffee culture for example will become unenjoyable if things develop on the current trajectory. Just look (or listen) at the noise on Indonesian roads to see where this leads if not nipped in the bud.

Another great video that is unfortunately very true, you have brought many subjects into the light but it's a shame the government doesn't listen or change😢 the ordinary people and businesses of Vietnam suffer because of all this things you bring up. I have many American and Australian friends that want to open businesses in Vietnam but sadly they all say it's easier and more beneficial to build and open in Malaysia, Thailand or Philippines over Vietnam and they love Vietnam as a country but hate the red tap, B.S in government agencies, immigration and all the corruption from politicians, government officials to local police. I myself have to give coffee money all the time when I'm out for one thing or another to the police🤦♂️ how can I argue with police or ask for proof when I only speak English and a foreigner on top of that. Police are always right 🤷♂️ I'm told😔 it's sad, I really love Vietnam myself but I'm really considering selling or liquidating everything, house business, investment, vehicles and moving to a friendlier country in the New Year😭

Well he said it. The fee lanes were reserved for the pregnant and old. As a young man, i call it discrimination. I will pay a fee, my time is money.
@duongglobalbusinessconsulting5 сағат бұрын
First, you are not young anymore. Second, prioritizing lanes for the elderly and pregnant isn’t discrimination-it’s basic decency. But the real issue here isn’t who gets access; it’s that system is so inefficient that paying a fee won't do anything.

If you think retail entry into VN is bad, import of goods through customs is far worse. Everyone has their hand out. If you don't pay guess what happens to your goods. VN is terribly corrupt.
