My sister had a POW bracelet with the name of the man in the white pants, closest to the camera, on it. She recently found and met him and returned the bracelet to him. I wanted to put the story in their local paper, but neither one of them wanted it. Both shy people.

There's a story that one of the prisoners built a house, in his mind,...every board...every nail...every saw cut. And when he was released... actually BUILT that house! Another prisoner...played dumb his entire time in prison...so much so the North Vietnamese released him early. What they didn't know...NO WAY was he dumb. In fact he memorized the names of HUNDREDS of prisoners and relayed those names to American authorities when he was released.

Doug Hegdahl. He wasn't a pilot but fell off his ship off the coast of N. Vietnam and was "rescued" by some NV fishermen and turned over to the Hanoi Hilton. He didn't want to accept early release but senior officers ordered him to as he had memorized the names of prisoners to let the country know that some POW's the N. Vietnamese had not acknowledged were actually POW's.

William Rowlett LCDR Richard Stratton ordered him to take early release. He was the only one who was allowed to go home early. Like you said he didn’t want to take it because he didn’t want to be labeled in a bad way like the ones who were in violation of SRO orders. They said he had the Gettysburg Address memorized backwards. At his debriefing he was told to say all the names again because he said it so fast they couldn’t keep up with him. He couldn’t help it because that’s the way he learned it. Very amazing man!!
