My late husband was with the 173d Mar66to Mar67 - Combat Wounded. Died as result of Agent Orange Feb 2011. 23 years active duty. He was so proud of having served with the Herd.

I was also there at that time. Came home slightly banged up but I’m so proud that I served with The Herd. I also have a few issues from Agent Orange. Mostly, it’s most of the issues one can get from AO. I go to the VA in West Haven, Connecticut which is pretty good. No complaints. I live next door to my daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren which is a real joy for me, and they seem to like it too.

At my husband's memorial service, my brother who lost his leg in Nam, got up (he was Force Recon Marine) and said that Dick had seen more action in Nam than he did. Believe me for my brother to admit that it had to be really bad. To all you guys I'll carry your memories for however longer I have until I rejoin the man I love.

@@janiefox3458 yes,my lady, we were at Dak To and the month of November 1967 was a living hell, night and day. We lost so many kids and so many terrible injuries. I don’t think I knew anyone personally that was not injured. I am sure your husband is resting finally and the memories of a horrible time have all faded. I am sorry for your loss and he will always be my brother in my heart . Peace and comfort to you and may God Bless you and your family.

My grandfather was in the 173rd and I played this for him and it touched his heart. He recently got diagnosed with terminal cancer and has been sharing more about his life. I tried to find the paratrooper song from tiktok and this came up and brought him lots of joy. Thank you to all vets and their families ❤️

Chris, my grandfather is Ed Raney. He wrote and recorded this album in 1968. His brother Jim is the soldier on the album cover. He was a SSGT in the 173rd on his way back to Vietnam for his third voulentary tour when the album went to press. Ed passed in 2007. He would be honored to know people are still enjoying his music.

@@gordoncraig5567 Did he record any other albums? Do you know of any other albums covering such material as this? As the millennial grandson of veterans from both World War II and Vietnam respectively, I have always had a strong appreciation for historical pop culture, topical songs, end enjoyably obscure LPs and 45s such as this. Being disabled, it has always been a slight heartache for me that I will never be able to serve, although given the political turmoil and popularity contest that comprises the modern military industrial complex, according to my friends who have served, I don't rightly know that I would feel at home in the service as I may have back in the day. Given the current generation, I have met a few officers who were not gentleman in terms of their respect towards me, and who were simply on power trips of arrogance for no better reason than the fact that they were in uniform and thought themselves my better, as opposed to seeing us all equally as Americans from the same country. One young Cadet even bragged to me about dog fighting, and have I known him in real life as opposed to being an online encounter, I would have reported his sorry self to his CO posthaste. I begged an ex-girlfriend of mine not to begin a relationship with someone she knew who was in the service, and while they had two children, they later separated due to his abusive nature towards her. It wasn't his service that made him this way, I could tell by his eyes that he was not the nicest of people. Again, nothing more than arrogance and power trips, tiny men trying to be alpha males full of bravado, usually to get dates or sexual conquests. Be they military, or simply in positions of power and authority, it is sad to see how a simple piece of fabricated uniform conceals the unfortunate lack of personality and Humanity of men and women alike. People tend to forget that way we're all born naked, and eventually we will all be dead naked. We are all born alone, and ultimately, we die alone, in our own arms. We all have to walk that Lonesome Valley and none can go with us. War is always going to be hell, but it just doesn't feel like the same American military to me, because my millennial generation is full of ignorance, uninformed lack of education, and a quickness to anger and smug condescension, borne of a refusal to better oneself as a human being. Thanks for sharing! This is really a very good historical document in recording overall in terms of musical acuity. If you yourself have served, thank you for your service.

The man on the cover James Raney (my grandmas brother) is still with us, William and Ed have passed. William is buried at the veterans cemetery in Boise Idaho in 2011. I’m unsure of where Ed was buried.

@Kegan Thank you for your comments. This is the first full length album my grandfather released. He had minor success as a country artist in the Washington and Idaho areas. He released 2 more albums of 6 songs each. One in the late 80's and the other in the early 90's. Both albums were original songs that for the most part were written in the late 70's. By that time the country music genre had evolved and they didn't sell too well due to being out dated. The Songs of The Sky Soldiers will always be his best selling album. This album was sold exclusively to veterans, he had like 15k copies sold at last count. I believe there are only 25 copies left, that I know of. He did one other military song. The Ballad of Audie Murphy. This song was presented to The Audie Murphy Society (I think that is what it is called). They have a link to it on one of their web pages.

Thanks for the info, sorry I'm just now getting back to you. I tend to gravitate to these songs as the mood strikes me, and I'm always surprised when I find myself commenting, and I'm looking down the line and seeing that I've been here before. I'm still looking for a full-length copy of this album, and would be satisfied with just having digital files if possible. More than willing to pay for anyone's time in providing this. The rest of his material, as well. He really did have a good singing voice for this genre of country music. Outdated is just fine with me :-)
