The Gillette Atra was originally released in 1977. It was an all metal handle. It's cartridge was two bladed with an exfoliating strip below the blades. The original cartridge did not have a lubrication strip and was squared and ridged. In fact, in a later cartridge release, Gillette Atra New Microsmooth, the cartridges upper portion was rounded and smoothed out to be more gentle on the skin. Cartridges with a lubrication strip were released as a Gillette Atra Plus. Cartridges moved upward and downward to best meet the contours of the face.
In this video I will be showing and shaving with a 1978 Gillette Atra and the Gillette Atra cartridge. The Gillette Atra handle in this video has the letter Y (indicating the year 1978) and number 4 (indicating the quarter of year) etched into the handle below the cartridge connection points. I will show a five pack of Schick Slim Twin, a five pack of the Gillette Atra (Microsmooth), a modern pack of 10 Gillette Atra Plus cartridges, a Gillette Atra cartridge and a Gillette Vector cartridge. In addition I will show the 1990's Gillette Slalom, the late 1990's Early 2000's Gillette Contour and the 2019 Gillette Vector which are all a part of the Gillette Atra Family of razor handles.

Note: The "Plus" name on cartridges indicates that they have a lubrication strip (lubricating strip). The lubrication strip is more often located on the cartridge above the blades.
